âIndeed,â Josiah admitted with a hint of melancholy. âI was too obsessed. I had noticed early on that Lysanneâs temperament had changed since childhood, yet I never doubted it.â
âMr. Guerra, even though Iâm your secretary, as a womarl, I canât help but feel more sympathy for Mrs.. Guerra.â
âI understand.â
The two had been working together for many years. Without saying much, they both understood each other.
Josiah asked, âPlease answer a question from a womanâs perspective for me.â
âGo ahead,â she said.
âWould you
still accept me if you were Lysander?â
Carol hesitated for a moment, forcing a laugh. âMr. Guerra, Iâm not your wife. My choices donât. necessarily align with hers.â
A chill ran through Josiahâs heart. âOkay, I understand.â
Carol heard his dejected tone and wanted to offer comfort. However, while she excelled at handling tasks, providing comfort was something she found quite challenging.
After a brief silence, she heard Josiah ask, âHow are things at the hospital?â
Carol had initially planned to share the details with him, and upon hearing his request, truthfully relayed, âAfter you left with Mrs. Guerra, everything at Thorne Constructions and Energies was fine, except⦠Ms. Thorne had returned to the hospital.â
Josiah was instantly infuriated. âIs she bothering Mr. Thorne and his family again?â
âSheâs here right now at Mr. Howard and Mdm. Mollyâs.â
A brief silence echoed from the other end of the line, a testament to Josiahâs effort to suppress his rising anger. When he finally spoke, his voice had turned considerably colder. âWhat is she planning to do this
time?â
His voice was flat, devoid of any trace of emotion, and the undertone of his words hinted at a deepâseated disdain.
Carol was making a phone call not far from Mollyâs hospital room. After a glance, she replied, âItâs the same old story. Youâve blocked her path. Her only hope lies in Mr. Howard and Mdm. Mollyâs continued pity for her, hoping they might grant her a bit more of their wealth. Sheâs causing quite a fuss.â
A crowd had already gathered in the corridor behind her, drawn in by the spectacle. The door to the patientâs room was wide open, and anyone with decent hearing could pick up on the commotion coming from inside.

decided to bring me home and raise me. I didnât even have my own name, and I had to use your biological daughterâs. You never loved me. You only saw me as a replacement for your real daughter. Wasnât I innocent in all this-â
Listening to this, Josiah felt a surge of anger welling up inside him.
Carol asked again, âDo you think we should have someone persuade her to leave? Mdm. Mollyâs condition has just slightly improved. If she continues to create such a fuss, Iâm afraid it might worsen Mdm. Mollyâs health
No sooner had the words been spoken than Howardâs furious roar was heard. âWhat are you trying to do? Leave her alone!â
âI needed to ask my mother personally: could she truly abandon me without a care? I wanted to see just how cold her heart really is!â
âStop! Let go of me now-
Carolâs voice became urgent. âMr. Guerra, something seems to be amiss.â
âGet her out of there,â ordered Josiah in a chilling tone. âNow!â
âOkay!â
Carol didnât hang up the phone. Instead, she immediately gathered a few bodyguards and instructed them to escort Lysanne out.
While they were on the phone, chaos had already erupted in Mollyâs hospital room. The commotion was so loud that even the security guards had been drawn over by the noise. However, none of them dared to approach Lysanne who was by the window.
After her loud cries went unanswered, Lysanne resorted to her usual tactics. She dashed to the balcony. flung open the window, and then sat down at the edge, with more than half of her body leaning out.
Molly was already on the verge of passing out from anger, and seeing Lysanne make such a scene caused a wave of pain to grip her heart.
The nurse arrived just in time to administer oxygen to her, preventing any severe consequences.
Howard was anxiously tending to his wife by the sickbed, while also trying to persuade Lysanne to calm down. His temples were throbbing, and he spoke with a tone of utter disappointment. âIf you have even the slightest regard for all weâve done to raise you, then stop this nonsense. Isnât it embarrassing enough as it is?â
Molly was propped up in her sickbed, one hand clutching her chest, the other trembling incessantly. Despite being on oxygen, her complexion remained particularly ghastly. She managed to utter, âHow did we end up raising you like this?â
The couple deeply regretted their past actions, so much so that they couldnât even shed a tear.
Upon seeing the situation, Lysanne became increasingly unwilling to back down. Her hands tightly grasped the window ledge, fearing she might actually fall. Her voice, however, became even more shrill.
âIf youâve got the guts, then watch me die! Watch my body get torn to pieces, my brains splattered all over the ground!â

She rattled on and on, saying so much, yet not a single tear fell from her eyes. She seemed full of life and energy as if she could keep going for half a day more.
The caregiver, who had been assisting Howard in taking care of Molly for a while, had a fair understanding of their household situation. Feeling indignant, she interrupted, âMs. Thorne, please stop talking. Mdm. Mollyâs condition isnât goodâ¦â
âThatâs perfect, Mom,â she said, her voice laced with regret. âWeâve been through so much together, and Iâve failed as a daughter, unable to fulfill my duties to you in life. So, letâs go together to what lies beyond. You wonât be alone on this journey to the underworld. I will be by your side!â
Lysanne raised her voice as though she was afraid others might not hear her, her eyes reddening to the point of almost bleeding due to intense jealousy.
The position of the daughter of the Thorne family and lady of the Guerra family had always been hers, but now it was all for naught. She had to at least secure a sum of money substantial enough to guarantee a lifetime of wealth and prosperity as compensation.
The crowd gathered around the hospital room door was initially lost in confusion. However, as they gradually understood the family drama unfolding inside, they couldnât help but start pointing and whispering about the roomâs occupants.
âThat couple seemed like decent folks, so why the favoritism? All is dear, and even if thereâs a preference, it shouldnât be this blatant! No wonder they donât get many visitors!â
âThis whole business about the biological daughter and adopted daughter sounds so confusing. Could there be some hidden story behind it all? We really shouldnât speculate further.â
âWhat could possibly be the hidden story here? Didnât you see that the girl was about to take her own life?â
âExactly, who would joke around with their own life!â
In the midst of chaos, Lysanne turned her face, revealing a triumphant smirk.
This strategy of utilizing public opinion indeed proved effective.
Howardâs chest heaved violently, his complexion not faring much better than his wifeâs. Known for his gentle nature and deep regard for his reputation, the humiliation of being laughed at by strangers alongside his wife was becoming unbearable.
It was baffling, looking back over two decades, how he had once thought Lysanne resembled the daughter
he had lost.
Looking back, it was clear there was a world of difference between the two girls.
âDad, would you rather see Mom and I die than part with our family wealth? Is Momâs worth to you important than money? Fine, if thatâs the case, then I willââ
less
Howard was shaking with rage. âWho on earth taught you to speak like that? Are you trying to push us to our graves?â
âNo one taught me. These are my own words. Dad, give me half of the family wealth, and I promise Iâll never bother you again. Otherwise, you might as well prepare to collect my remains!â
Neither Howard nor Molly said another word. They simply shook their heads, their expressions as desolate

as if their hearts had turned to ashes. Theyâd had enough of her relentless and extravagant demands.
âIf you refuse, Iâm going to jump right now!â Lysanne didnât dare to let go as she leaned her head out.
The crowd watching thought she was genuinely intending to commit suicide, and they hurriedly began to plead with her to come down.
Suddenly, an incredibly calm female voice echoed, âMs. Thorne, if youâre planning to jump, please do so promptly. Donât waste everyoneâs time.â
