Chapter 514 Strike Where It Hurts Most
Aiden, seated in the middle, had just nervously taken a sip of coffee when he nearly choked and coughed Adrian, however, nodded calmly. âDoes Lysander know about that?â
Josiah maintained his composure, his eyes narrowed condescendingly. âFor now, Iâm the only one trying to salvage this relationship. She knows what I want.â
âWhich means she hasnât agreed to getting back together with you, right?â asked Adrian.
Josiah took a sip of his coffee and said quietly, âYes, for now.â
Adrian scoffed. âThatâs what you wanted to tell me? You and I both understand Lysanderâs personality well. Sheâs an assertive person, not someone you can get back together with just because you want to.â
âYou donât have to worry about that, Dr. Sutton. Whether or not Lysander and I get back together is none of your business.â
âBut as long as you two arenât back together, Lysander is technically single, I may not pursue her, but weâre still friends, not to mention colleagues who work well with each other-â
âShe and I used to have a child.â
A brief silence ensued..
Josiah continued, âWe share the pain of losing that child, and thatâs something we have in common.â
âSo what? Lysander will only resent you for that.â
Josiah smirked. âEven hatred is better than having no feelings at all, Dr. Sutton. At least she harbors some resentment toward me, but as for you, no matter how much effort you put in, youâll only ever be a colleague to her.â
Aiden didnât even dare to breathe, anxiously taking another sip of coffee and observing both their reactions without knowing what the coffee tasted like.
Josiah, taking control of the situation, remained calm and composed.
âShe bore no resentment toward me, so sheâs not particularly averse to me. If she ever needs someone to spend her life with in the future, Iâm a viable option. After all, her previous marriage to you wasnât out of love, so weâre all starting from scratch when it comes to developing feelings. Whoâs to say I donât stand at chance?â
âYou donât.â Josiah chuckled and corrected him confidently. âBecause Iâm here.â
Adrian, momentarily stunned, hadnât expected him to show such confidence. âMr. Guerra, I need to remind you once again that if youâre thinking of getting back together with Lysander, using the term âreconciliationâ might not be appropriate.â
âItâs not your place to define whatâs going on between us.â

The expression on Josiahâs face turned icy and grim for a moment, startling Aiden. Aidenâs face turned pale, and he wanted to say something but couldnât come up with an appropriate topic.
âMama⦠Mama⦠Right then, Aurora began speaking.
Aiden, relieved to finally get a break from all that tension, exclaimed, âThe baby just talked! Is she feeling uncomfortable? Josiah, why donât you check on the child?â
Josiah teased the baby with his hand, making her burst into laughter and grip his fingers, playing with them like a toy.
Seeing that, Aiden quickly fetched a toy. âHere you go. Why donât we play with this little ducky?â
Josiah said, âItâs okay, it doesnât hurt. Sheâs too smart to be interested in ordinary toys.â
He rested his hand on the edge of the stroller, allowing Aurora to grab at it.
Adrian spoke. âThe pain of losing that child will be with her forever. Sheâll never forgive you.â
After a moment of silence, Josiah said slowly, âI never hoped for that. My only desire now is to maintain the status quo with Lysander. Thatâs what I told her myself, and she didnât object.â
This is bad I donât think Adrianâs happy to hear that.
Adrian, appearing calm and collected, retorted defiantly, âIf the status quo youâre referring to involves you supporting Lysander in establishing a firm foothold in the business world, then I can understand why she
didnât immediately object.â
âThank you for your understanding, Josiah said politely, his tone dripping with irony as he added, âI heard that you tried helping, too, but it didnât quite work out, right?â
There are no rules in the battle between love rivals. One can just strike where it hurts the most.
Adrian had grown accustomed to Lysander rejecting him and only spaced out for a few seconds. âI suppose itâs because I still plan on being a doctor in the future.â
This was once Lysanderâs dream.
He might not be her lover, but he was the indispensable anesthesiologist in the operating room, her
partner.
To him, that was his advantage against Josiah.
Adrian, reluctant to give up, said, âThe thought of Lysander never returning to the operating room fills met with genuine regret. Mr. Guerra, do you know what Lysanderâs wish is?â
Josiah naturally knew, for Lysander had told him countless times throughout their three years of marriage.
Her lifelong dream was to become an exceptional doctor, with a specific aspiration to be an outstanding gynecologist. She aimed to keep every expecting mother safe and ensure that each baby arrived in this world healthy and sound.
Lysander had told him that society had significantly improved compared to the past, yet there were still

Josiah pursed his lips. âI know.â
âOne day, when she takes off the heavy burden on her shoulders and chooses to live the life she has always yearned for. Iâm the only one who can be by her side as she fulfills her wish.â
The coffee had turned cold during their confrontation.
Adrian took a sip, tasting the faint hint of coffee aroma amidst the bitterness of the cooled beverage. Frowning, he set the cup down and said. âMr. Guerra, the coffee has gone cold. I believe weâre done talking.â
Josiah showed no intention of getting up. âShow yourself out.â
The sun shone brightly outside the window, and if one listened closely, the chirping of birds could be heard. It was truly a beautiful day, and it would be a pity to ruin it with a fight.
When Aiden noticed the sudden change in Josiahâs complexion, he quickly held the coffee pot, worried it would get knocked over if a fight broke out.
Josiah, puzzled, asked, âWhat are you doing?â
Aiden couldnât tell the truth, so he suggested indirectly, âThe coffee has gone cold. I just want to have more. Perhaps you two should drink some too. You know, to calm yourselves down. It wonât be good to cause a scene in public.â
Josiah scoffed. âWhatâs not good about this? Itâs not like weâre fighting or arguing.â
As he spoke, he sat up straight, resting his hands on the table,
Adrian, on the other hand, seemed as calm as ever. âMr. Guerra, Iâll say it again. If Lysander accepts you, Iâm more than willing to be just her friend and colleague. But if she doesnât, I can wait until the day she finds her way back to the right track.â
