“Could you answer it for me?” Josiah asked without lifting his head.

“Perhaps you should just return her call later.” Lysander once again tucked his phone back into his suit pocket

“My mom has been distant since the divorce, devoting herself to prayers. If she’s calling me, it must be something urgent.”

“Just answer it,” he said.

Lysander thought of Susan’s high blood pressure, fearing any delay might worsen the situation. She had no choice but to answer the call. “Hello?”

On the other end of the phone, Susan was stunned momentarily. “Who is this?”

“Madam Susan, it’s Lysander. How have you been feeling?

“All’s well. Lysander? Y–Your voice… It’s different. That’s not right… Lysander has always been mute. Who are you really? Where’s Josiah? Why do you have his phone?”

Upon hearing Susan’s confident tone, Lysander felt a faint sense of relief in her heart.

“My throat has improved a bit, so I can speak now. However, it’s still a bit hoarse. I guess it will take some time to get back to normal. If you don’t believe me, just wait a moment and let Josiah get back to you.”

“It’s not that I don’t believe. It’s just…” Susan gave a weary, bitter laugh. “I’m getting old. My reactions are slower. You just called me Madam Susan. Only Lysander would address me that way.”

Lysander asked, “Doesn’t Ms. Lysanne also address you in the same way?”

“Her?” Susan’s tone was filled with disdain. “Forget about it. I don’t want to talk about her. Lysander, are you feeling better now?”

“I’m much better now. Thank you, Madam Susan.”

“I heard about what happened that day. It must have scared you, didn’t it? I’ve been praying recently, hoping you could be blessed with peace and prosperity. It seems my prayers have had some effect, as you’re able to speak now. Tonight, I’ll go and recite the bible for you.”

Lysander chuckled. “There’s no need to do that, Madam Susan. Everything will be all right.”

“Still, it’s necessary, and I want to do it for you” Susan then asked, “Is Josiah with you right now?”

After some thought, Lysander responded, “We met by chance at the hospital.”

Susan chuckled. “It wasn’t a coincidence. He specifically went to find you.”

Lysander remained noncommittal. “Madam Susan, Josiah is currently tending to his wounds and can’t take any calls. However, he should be better soon. I’ll have him call you back in a bit.”

Susan said, “No need! No need. I don’t have much to talk about with him. I was just curious if he had. found you, but now I already know”

Suddenly, Molly’s voice came through the phone. “Lysa? Lysa, can you hear me? Are you doing all right over there?”

Susan said to her, “That’s Lysanne’s mother.”
