The Diwali celebrations had mellowed into a cozy night of games and laughter. The living room had transformed into a makeshift battleground, with cushions sprawled across the floor and a large wooden board set up for a game of cards.
The air was thick with anticipation and competitive energy as Dhruvin and Raj exchanged glances, silently communicating their next move.
"Tum log har baar kaise jeet rahe ho?" (How are you guys winning every single round?) Aashna narrowed her eyes, arms crossed in suspicion.
Dhruvin shrugged, feigning innocence, while Raj hid a smirk behind his hand. "Shayad hum bas lucky hain?" (Maybe weâre just lucky?) Raj suggested.
Sia let out an exaggerated groan. "Lucky, my foot! This smells fishy."
Manan, lounging back against the couch, grinned. "I say we search them for cheat sheets. They look too smug."
Aashna leaned in, watching them like a hawk. Then, with a sudden move, she snatched the small piece of paper from Rajâs lap.
"AHA! Pakde gaye!" (AHA! Caught you red-handed!) she exclaimed, waving it in the air. "Mujhe pata tha tum dono kuch gadbad kar rahe ho!" (I knew you two were up to something!)
The entire room erupted into laughter as Dhruvin and Raj held up their hands in surrender. "Alright, alright, you got us! But hey, we just wanted to spice things up a bit," Dhruvin admitted with a cheeky grin.
"Spice things up? Iâm about to make you eat your words," Aashna shot back, smacking Raj on the arm. "No more cheating!"
With the game night officially over, everyone sprawled across the floor and sofas, ensuring the house was spotless before Aaji and Aajoba had gone to bed.
Now, it was time for the much-awaited horror movie marathon.
Sia flopped onto the couch, tossing a pillow at Manan. "I swear, if you scream like a child again, Iâm recording it."
Manan gasped dramatically. "Excuse me, madam! Main cheekhta nahi, main apni feelings express karta hoon." (I do NOT screamâI express my fear in a dignified manner.) "Unlike Raj, who nearly jumped onto Saumyaâs lap last time."
"Jhooth!" (Lies!) Raj objected, while Saumya shook her head, laughing. "You totally did."
Meanwhile, Dhruvin, sitting comfortably on the sofa, had made sure to save a seat beside him. But just as Aashna entered the room with a tub of popcorn and snacks, Raj plopped down next to him.
"Hatt." (Move.) Dhruvin said, kicking Rajâs leg lightly.
"Kyun? Yahaan acha lag raha hai." (Why? Iâm comfortable.) Raj smirked.
"Sit on the floor." Dhruvin insisted.
"Aashna ko kyun nahi bol raha?" (Why donât you tell Aashna to sit on the floor?)
Raj wiggled his eyebrows. "Ohhh, I see how it is."
Dhruvin rolled his eyes as Aashna sat down beside him, completely unaware of the silent battle that had taken place. She handed him the popcorn, settling in comfortably. As the movie began, Dhruvin leaned closer and murmured, "If you get scared, donât worry. Iâll protect you."
Aashna snorted, giving him a sideways glance. "Oh, how generous of you. But you should be more concerned about Raj and Saumya."
Sure enough, Raj let out a shriek as the first jumpscare played. The room burst into laughter while Saumya threw a pillow at him. "Youâre the one who picked this movie!"
As the film continued, Dhruvinâs fingers lightly brushed against Aashnaâs, slowly intertwining them. The touch sent butterflies fluttering in her stomachâthis was far more intimate than anything before. Neither of them spoke about it, but the warmth of their hands remained throughout the movie.
After a while, Aashna quietly slipped away and made her way upstairs. Her heart pounded as she paced around Dhruvinâs room. She had spent the last half-hour rehearsing in her mind. It was time. Time to confess.
Taking a deep breath, she picked up her phone and texted him.
Aashna: Can you come upstairs? I need to talk.
Within seconds, she heard hurried footsteps. Dhruvin burst in, looking around with concern. "Are you okay? What happened?"
Aashna took a deep breath, willing her nerves to settle. "Relax. I just⦠I have something to say."
He frowned, still scanning her expression for any sign of distress. "Go on."
She took a step closer. "I used to hate you. I despised the idea of being your partner for the project. I thought you were arrogant, lazy, and someone I wanted nothing to do with. But then⦠you changed everything. You earned my trust. You made me believe thereâs so much more to you than just sarcasm and smirks. You made me fall for you. And now, I canât imagine my life without you. Every day, I find myself falling for you more."
Dhruvinâs heart pounded against his chest. His throat felt dry, his emotions tangled in a whirlwind. His eyes welled up as he took a deep, shaky breath, struggling to keep himself together. He wanted to kiss her right then and thereâbut he let her continue.
Aashna picked up a small box from the bed and opened it to reveal a bracelet. "I bought this a while ago⦠I was just waiting for the moment I was sure. And now, I am. This is my promise to you. That Iâll always be here. Now, you can come home You can come home to me."
"May I?" She took his right hand and fastened the bracelet around his wrist.
Overwhelmed, Dhruvin pulled her into a tight hug, his hands cupping her face. "Aashna⦠I was dying to hear this. You have no idea how much I crave you, how much you mean to me. From the first moment I saw you in that lift, Iâve been crazy for you. In my world of chaos and darkness, you are my sun, my goal, my Aashu."
Overcome with emotion, they held each other, neither wanting to let go. Aashna pulled back slightly, her breath uneven, her fingers still resting lightly against Dhruvinâs chest. Their faces were so close, the air between them crackling with something intense, something inevitable. Her eyes, wide and filled with something raw and unspoken, searched his.
And then, with a teasing smirk curling at her lips, she whispered, "You have officially secured the right. Now kiss me already. Iâm dying here."
Dhruvin let out a husky chuckle, but his eyes darkened, his amusement fading into something much deeper, much hungrier. His hand, strong and sure, slid up her arm, tracing the bare skin just above her wrist before curling gently around her neck. His thumb brushed along her jawline, tilting her chin slightly, making her look at himâfully, completely.
"Jaise tumhari marzi, Aashuâ¦" (As you wish, Aashuâ¦) he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. And then, he closed the distance between them.
The first touch of his lips was soft, almost hesitant, as if savoring the moment, memorizing the feel of her against him. But the hesitation didnât last long. The second kiss was deeper, more urgent, filled with every unsaid word, every stolen glance, every lingering touch they had shared until now.
Aashna melted into him, her hands gripping the front of his kurta as if anchoring herself. His other hand slipped around her waist, pulling her flush against him, their bodies molding together in perfect synchrony. Her skin tingled where his fingers traced lazy patterns on her back, sending shivers up her spine.
His lips moved against hers, slow yet demanding, teasing yet consuming. He kissed her like she was something fragile and precious, yet also something he had been starved forâsomething he couldn't get enough of.
Aashnaâs fingers traveled up, threading through his hair, tugging lightly, drawing a low groan from him. The sound sent a thrill through her, making her dizzy. She could feel his heart pounding against hers, the warmth of his breath mingling with her own.
Dhruvin broke away for a brief second, resting his forehead against hers, his chest rising and falling heavily. His fingers traced the outline of her lips, swollen from his kiss, his gaze molten with longing.
"You have no idea, Aashna⦠Iâve been waiting so long to do this." His voice was hoarse, thick with emotion.
Aashna let out a soft laugh, still breathless. "Toh ab wait kyun kar rahe ho?" (So why are you waiting now?)
That was all the encouragement he needed. With a smirk, he pulled her back into him, capturing her lips once more, this time deeper, slower, as if sealing a promise between them. The world outside that room ceased to existâthere was only the sound of their breathing, the heat between them, and the taste of something utterly intoxicating.
And then, just as Aashna thought she might completely lose herself in him, he pulled away slightly, his lips ghosting over hers as he whispered, "So, finally⦠are you my baby now?"
Aashna, still dazed, bit her lip, her cheeks flushed. She tilted her head playfully, pretending to think. "Hmmm⦠soch ke batati hoon." (Hmmm⦠Iâll think about it.)
And before he could react, she stepped away, flashing him a mischievous grin before walking out the door, leaving Dhruvin standing thereâbreathless, dazed, and completely, utterly gone for her.
