Dominic disappeared after lunch. He mentioned having a conversation at dinner but wanted to get work done before he does. I can't imagine what he needs to talk to me about, but I couldn't focus on that. So instead, I wanted to spend time getting settled before Dominic throws me into another loop.
I ended up taking a walk around the rose garden with the head maid Liliana. We spent the time catching up since I haven't seen her since I left. She told me all the gruesome details of Dominic's downfall when I left and how many bottles of alcohol she had to throw away. There weren't enough apologies in the world I could've given to Liliana for dealing with the aftermath, especially considering she was my peace during this mess. She told me Dominic gave her a ten thousand euro bonus for the inconvenience, but I still need to do something to show her how sorry I am.
We were sitting admiring the blooming flowers when we saw a young maid at the entrance.
"Ms. Montrelli, you have a guest waiting for the Loggia." The young maid spoke softly.
A guest? I don't know anyone in Genoa, so I am clueless as to who this guest is.
"Who is it?" I wondered.
The young maid gave me a weary look and bit her bottom lip nervously. This wasn't a good sign. I sighed before following the maid. Whoever it is doesn't want me to know, so I wouldn't refuse to see them. There is a tiny group of people who I would refuse to see. If I weren't so curious and bored, I wouldn't bother to go.
My curiosity was killed when I saw strawberry blond long hair and the smell of rosemary filled the air. It is Dominic's mother, Vanessa. Vanessa sat tall on the sofa facing the bar. She was sipping on a glass of rose as I approached her. Vanessa didn't stand to greet me when she saw me. Instead, she nodded and waited for me to sit down. I gave Liliana and the maid the go-ahead to leave me.
"My husband told me you were back, so I wanted to see it with my own eyes." Vanessa started. There was a hint of snark in her voice.
"Yes, I got back yesterday."
"Did you enjoy yourself during your...hiatus?" A hiatus?! Does she think my time away was a vacation? As if I didn't deserve to live my life!
"I wouldn't use the word hiatus, but yes, I am back and better."
"Let's skip the pleasantries, shall we? Your absence caused a lot of problems for my son and our famiglia. Frankly, it was selfish for you to leave, in my opinion. Do you know what you've done to my son after you left?" Vanessa snapped.
"What I've done to your son? Do you know what your son has done to me? Do you know what your famiglia has done to me? I was miserable, and so was your son! We hated each other. I was robbed of life for four years! I'm sorry, but I couldn't care less what my leaving did for your business. I left for the sake of myself and, frankly, my relationship, and I won't apologize for that." I stated calmly.
This woman is insane. I know she hated me from the start, but this was an overstep on her part! She's blaming me as if I asked for this lifestyle! If this weren't a forced arranged marriage, Vanessa would have every right to hate me.
Vanessa's face was unchanged from the sour stone look. She couldn't care less about what I have to say or my reason for leaving, only that her son was hurt and made to look weak in front of the other famiglias.
"So how are we supposed to trust that you aren't going to run off again when things get too hard? Do you understand how much of an embarrassment that is to my son? There is a better, more suitable woman ready to take your spot! If you're not capable of handling my son, do us a favour and disappear." Vanessa shouted.
"Does your son know you're here trying to get me to leave him again? Because, with all due to respect, the only one who can tell me to disappear is my fiance. So before you try to embarrass yourself any further, I suggest you leave."
"I am the matriarch of this famiglia, little girl. You need to watch how you speak to me!" Vanessa snapped.
"I am also your son's fiance and one day his wife. You need to watch how you speak to me! This is now my home and my famiglia. You better believe that if I don't want you around, you won't be. So if you want to continue to be in your son's life and possibly in the future your grandchildren's lives, leave now." I stormed out of the Loggia and walked back into the house.
I couldn't care less if Vanessa stayed outside or not. As I stormed the halls, I saw the same maid near the main entryway.
"Please make sure my guest doesn't get inside the house. If you don't feel comfortable telling her, bring one of the guards with you and make sure you tell them it's a personal request from me." I demanded.
The maid nodded and scurried off down the hall.
I wanted to rush down to Dominic's office to tell him about his mother, but I needed to calm down first. The only people who can calm me down are my girls. So I went upstairs to my room to retrieve my phone. I called Juliana first, and she answered instantly.
"Please tell me everything is going okay!" Juliana screamed.
"Yes, Dominic and I are fine, but his mother made me crazy mad!"
"What happened?"
"She came over today and basically told me how much I inconvenienced her son, how I made him look like a fool, and that other girls are waiting and more suitable to be his wife!"
"YOU'RE PLAYING WITH ME, RIGHT! So she said that to you?" Juliana shouted.
"Yes! I couldn't believe she drove all the way over here to complain and tell me how incompetent I am. I had to leave before she tries to offer me money to leave Dominic."
"I would've taken the money and took Dominic on a trip if she offered."
"Be serious, Juliana!" I said, exasperated.
I collapse on the bed in defeat. I knew coming back would be difficult, but I didn't expect it to be so defeating. This is my famiglia too at the end of it all. Who would want their in-laws hating them?
"Sorry, it's just shocking that she flat out said these things to you! I understand that Dominic is her son, and she wants to protect him, but she should know how much of a jackass her son was in the beginning and how hard it was for you. You didn't ask for this! This is absolutely crazy!"
"Thank you! The people-pleaser in me wants to fix the relationship with Vanessa, but at the same time...she hates me! She's hated me since the first time we met. I was the last choice in her eyes. If Vanessa could get her way, that whore from my engagement would be Dominic's wife by now; not me."
"What has Dominic said about this?"
"I haven't told him yet. I just gave the maid instructions not to let Vanessa into the house, and I came upstairs to call you."
"Are you going to tell him?"
"Of course, but I just don't know how to tell him without being disrespectful."
"Is that Alessandra?" I heard a whisper in the background. It was quickly muffled, but it was clearly a male's voice. It was a very familiar voice too...
"IS THAT DAMON?!" I shrieked once the voice identity clicked in my head.
"Ugh, yes, it is. He doesn't know how to stay quiet!" Juliana snapped.
"Where are you, and why are you with Damon?"
"He flew back to come to bribe me to come to Genoa for two days. I'm still considering his offer." Juliana confessed. I could hear the shame in her voice from being caught. I couldn't help but let a chuckle slip.
"Don't laugh at me!" Juliana begged.
"I can't help it! It's just a cute situation. It's even cuter you're trying to hide it. Damon would've told me that he got you to come here."
"No, he wouldn't have; that was a part of the deal if I agreed."
"So, are you packing your bag? Oh, how much is he paying you to become?" I wondered.
"Five thousand euros. I might double it for being a dumbass."
"FIVE THOUSAND?! You better forget that pride you have and take that money!" I gasped. Five thousand euros is a lot of money! Maybe if Dominic bribed me, we would probably have a better start.
"Oh god..." Juliana groaned.
"Just shut up, pack your things, and call me when you get here so we can go out for lunch. Ask if Bambina can come too. I met this girl today that I think you guys would love to meet. She's was in the same situation as me, but her story is a lot more wild."
"Ugh, fine, I'll text you when I arrive."
"Perfect!"
Once I hung up, there was a knock at the door. I opened the door to find Liliana.
"Ms. Ally, Mr. Vincenzo is awaiting your presence in the dining hall," Liliana announced.
I followed Liliana down the halls towards the dining hall. Dominic was sitting at the head of the table. His famous charming smile was on full display, but I notice he was actively fidgeting with his silver spoon. Dominic must be nervous.
I sat in the chair beside him. Dominic swooped my hand into his and brought it to his lips. He gave me a soft kiss as Liliana brought our meal over. It was very light, but I felt his hand tremor with mine.
"Come out and say it, Dominic. I can sense your nervousness." I blurted out.
"I'm not nervous very often," Dominic commented.
"You are very hard to read."
"I wanted to discuss the possibility of maybe having another engagement party," Dominic confessed.
"You want to have another party?"
"I don't personally; the council does."
"We already had one. Doesn't it look weird if we do another one?"
"That's what I said, but my uncles don't like the thought of people knowing we have marital issues. So they think another party would solve that."
"Another party would look stupid, not united. If anything, we should just get married." I said suddenly.
I paused as soon as that sentence escaped my mouth. Dominic's hand tightened in mine. I looked up at his face to see his face stone frozen. His eyes were unreadable, as his expression. We knew marriage is the final step, but to consider it this soon is crazy...right? Marriage might be too soon.
"You want to get married now?" Dominic questioned.
"I'm not sure. It might be too soon, but it does make more sense to have a wedding than another engagement party. Or we can host a function like a charity or something." I suggested.
"When do you want to get married?"
"I don't know... when do you want to get married?" I questioned.
"Do you want the truth?" Dominic leaned over so close that his lips were inches from mine.
"Yes."
"I would marry you tonight if I could." He whispered, his breath lightly grazing my wet lips.
I stared into his eyes to confirm what he just said. Dominic looked me dead in his sights with confidence. He never strayed his stare. I felt his hand relax in mine and the tremor slowly dissipated. He's earnest!
"Are you honestly ready to get married?" I asked him to give me an honest answer, especially before I spoil the mood.
"We need more time together, yes, but I'm ready. I've been ready since you came back to me. Suppose you want us to wait however long, fine. I'm willing to wait however long for you." Dominic declared.
It took a lot not to shed a tear. However, I have to keep in mind that I have unpleasant news to share with him.
"Your mama hates me." I blurted.
"Where did that come from?" Dominic said, shocked. His head snapped back in reaction to my bomb.
"She came by today after lunch. She was unequivocal on how I embarrassed you and the famiglia. She mentioned how getting in trouble is my fault and that there are better women out there ready and more deserving of my place as your future wife." I shared softly. My eyes were looking down the entire time.
"This isn't a funny joke..."He hissed.
"Do you really think I would joke about this? Ask Liliana. Vanessa Vincenzo believes that disgusting bimbo you used to date would be a better wife than me! Now my response you may not like it, but I'm telling you, Dominic, I will not tolerate her attitude in my home."
Dominic pulled away from me until his back hit the thrown. He was reserved, but he never let go of my hand. A few moments had passed when a smile crept back onto Dominic's lips.
"Why are you smiling?" I wondered.
"You said my home. I'm happy you considered my home your home too." Dominic spoke proudly.
I couldn't help but blush. My home is wherever he is.
"Let's back to the conversation. I let Vanessa know that she can't expect to be in our future children's life if she continues to disrespect me. You can continue your relationship with her because that's your mama and family over anything. Still, she will not be in mine." I declared.
"She really said this to you? I didn't even know she was at the house."
"Your papa let her know that I was back at the house, so she paid a visit. I'm guessing she was hoping you'd be working. We talked in the Loggia. You haven't told me your thoughts."
"To be quite honest, I'm fucking livid. My own mama has the nerve to tell my wife she doesn't deserve to be with me!? She's getting set straight. If someone doesn't like my wife, they don't need to exist in my life."
Dominic meant every word he said, and it brought nothing but the feeling of relief. Of course, I want him to have the best relationship with his mama. However, to know he's ready to put his foot down on someone disrespecting me is the reassurance I need. I would do the same thing for him. I haven't talked to my papa because of Dominic. I miss him terribly but in the end if you can't respect my choice and my partner you can't respect me.
"Okay," I spoke suddenly.
"Okay, what?"
"I'll marry you by the end of the month."
"You're serious?" Dominic moved in closer to get a better look into my eyes.
Staring straight back into his eyes, I said, "I am."
