Chapter 47
The Hockey Star’s Remorse by Riley Above Story
The nearest hospital was a few miles away, and the drive felt like an eternity. I kept glancing back at Timothy, worried about his condition. He had saved my life, and now he might pay for it.
Finally, we arrived at the hospitalâs emergency room entrance and I shifted the car into park. I looked back at Timothy, whoâs breaths had calmed to a gentle cadence.
âIâll be right back,â I told him, jumping out of the car.
I rushed inside, shouting for help to anyone that would hear. I ran directly into one of the nurses and she gasped in horror when she drew away from my grip with blood.
I looked down at myself and nearly cried at the sight of Timothyâs blood smeared. all over my skin and clothes. The scent of iron was thick in the air.
âMiss?â The nurse beckoned, resting a hand on my arm. âWhat happened?â
âHeâ¦â I could barely get the words out through a sob. âTimothyâ¦he was stabbed! He stabbed him!â
Another nurse rushed up, but this one kept her distance as she looked at me with at look of skepticism. âI donât see any cuts on youâ¦â
âHis name is Timothy Hayes,â I continued, pointing to the doors. âHeâs laying down in my car and heâs bleeding.â
For a moment, both of them blinked and exchanged glances. This made my blood boil and I slammed my hand against the near wall.
âFor god sakes, DO something!â I screamed.
âAll right!â The one nurse held onto me, keeping me steady. âJust point us to where he is.â
The nurses followed me out to the car where Timothy was still laying down. One had brought out a wheelchair for him to sit in, which made it easier to roll him inside. He didnât respond to most of the movement, his body pale and limp as they brought him to the back for treatment.
I was left in the hospital lobby, soaked in blood and rain. Some eyes lingered on O A me as I walked over and took a seat by the fish tank. Nausea was kicking in, but I couldnât decipher if it was from the hunger or from all the blood.
The hospital lobby seemed like a breeding ground for anxiety and uncertainty. Every passing minute felt like an eternity, and my mind was consumed by thoughts of what could be happening to him.
I clenched my trembling hands together, trying to focus on anything other than the worstâcase scenarios. All those moments we shared together, from the laughter to the tender touches, came flooding back to me in a suffocating realization.
How could we have come so far, only for it to end like this? Even if Bruce turned out to be right at Timothyâs habits, I would never want him dead.
I glanced at the entrance of the emergency room, desperately hoping to catch a glimpse of a doctor or nurse with news of Timothy. After a few minutes, I decided to find a distraction of any kind.
I took out my phone, hoping it even still functioned after getting rained on. It was no surprise that Bruce forgot to swipe it off me, like the genius he was. Fortunately, the screen flickered on and I caught the mass of notifications that awaited me, mostly from Aria and Lucas.
Aria sent, Where the fare u??
Answer me!
Please me okay!!!
Lucas texted, Evie, if you can, please pick up! Ariaâs stalking you! Are you good???
The feeling of isolation intensified, and I longed to talk to either them. With a heavy sigh, I clicked on Ariaâs picture and dialed her number.
Not even a few rings passed before she answered, her voice almost a screech. âEvie, where the hell have you been? Weâve been trying to reach you!â
âIâm so sorry, Aria,â I said, my voice trembling. âIâve been at the hospital with. Timothy. He got hurt, and I just⦠I couldnât think straight.â
Ariaâs tone softened. âOh, Evie, Iâm sorry. Is Timothy okay?â
Thu âI donât know yet, I admitted with a sniffle. âThe doctors are examining him now. Itâs been so long, and Iâm scared, Aria. Iâm really scared.â
âTry to stay strong, Evie,â Aria encouraged. âTimothy is a tough guy, and heâll make it through. You have to believe that.â
âI know, but what ifâ¦â my voice cracked, unable to finish the thought.
âYou canât think like that,â Aria said firmly. âFocus on the positive. Timothy is strong, and he has you by his side. Thatâs a powerful combination.â
I nodded, even though Aria couldnât see me. âYouâre right. Iâll stay positive.â âGood,â Aria said. âDo you need me to come up there? Which ER is it?â
âItâs pretty far away,â I said, although I honestly didnât know. The area was unfamiliar to me. âBut you donât have to come all the way up.â
Aria sighed. âYouâre sure?â
âIâm positive,â I assured her, wiping the tears from my eyes. âThank you, Aria.â
After hanging up, I felt a little more supported, but the waiting was still agonizing. I tried to distract myself by flipping through magazines in the lobby. Only a few pages in, I noticed something peculiar.
âTimothyâs New Beau?â The headline read in bold letters. Below it was a picture of con his skin glowing and his eyes twinkling at the camera. It was huge contrast to how heâd looked getting rolled in the ER.
Just beside his face was another photo, this time of a woman dark hair and round. eyes looked familiar to my own. I brought the page closer to my face and nearly shouted upon figuring out that the blurred woman was actually me! They had gotten an image of me leaving the courtroom.
Timothy was standing beside me, looking far more composed. There was a red circle over my hand where it connected to Timothyâs elbow, and the words âIs this business professionalâ were type out below it.
âUnbelievable!â I flipped to the next message, only to discover more news on the issue. Fans were chipping in with their opinions, particularly about me.
Jessica: I wish I was Timothyâs lawyer. His case wouldâve been settled ages ago!
T Rachel: He couldnât have picked a prettier lawyer? Especially if he was going to date her afterwardâ¦.
I rolled my eyes and shut the magazine before tossing it back into the stack beside me. Figures they would have a lot to say. At least Aria seemed more generous with the idea of Timothy and I dating, even though it was far from the truth.
In hindsight, of course. We never actually dated, as Bruce made painfully obvious. when talking me down. Timothy claimed that the side of him that Iâd known in High School was completely gone.
Still, media perception of him remained determined to always paint him as the successful bachelor with a woman at his side. It was a heavy contrast to the reserved, career focused man Iâd spent time with.
After what felt like an eternity, a doctor approached me with a tired smile. I stood. up, holding my breath in preparation for the news..
âYou must be Evie,â he said, holding his hands together. âIâm Dr. Stevens. Timothy is doing well.
The stab wound was deep, but we managed to stop the bleeding, and heâs stable now.â
My grip on the seat eased up and I was able to stand more independently. I sighed, overcome with a rush of relief. âThy you so much.â
âOf course,â Dr. Stevens said with a nod. âHeâs asked to see you.â
I blinked. âHâHe did?â
Dr. Stevens tucked in his chin. âHe demanded it, actually. I you could please follow me.â
He motioned for me to walk with him. Without another word, I followed behind him down the cool hallway, feeling my resolve slowly build its way up again.
How come he asked for me?
