Consumed by Deception: Chapter 13
Consumed by Deception: A Dark Marriage Mafia Romance (Deception Trilogy Book 3)
âYou didnât have to come with us,â I say as we walk through the mall.
I want to buy a few things because I realized just how boring my old wardrobe is. I also want to get Jeremy a new coat in preparation for our small family vacation.
Adrian said heâd take care of it, so I have no clue where weâre going. That doesnât stop me from being excited about our first getaway as a family, though.
It took six years, but itâs finally happening.
After learning about the scrutiny my husband is under, I want him to step away from work for a while to clear his head. He doesnât agree, but heâll eventually change his mind.
When I told him about wanting to go shopping, he insisted on coming too. Kolya and Boris follow us, and even though theyâre keeping a short distance, weâre drawing attention wherever we go.
Jeremy seems oblivious to all of it as he trots between us, one hand in his fatherâs and the other in mine. Itâs strange how my little angel is lively and bright despite being born in such a dark world.
And itâs that light thatâs kept me going.
Adrian tilts his head to the side. âIâm not allowed to come along?â
âThatâs not what I said.â
âThen what?â
I narrow my eyes at him slightly. Iâm well aware he doesnât trust me and probably thinks Iâll meet Luca as I did a week ago. But I guess, even if he started to believe me, he wouldnât give me free rein this soon.
I puff out a breath. âDonât you have work?â
âNot today, no.â He strokes Jeremyâs hand. âArenât you happy I came along, Malysh?â
âYes, Papa!â
Adrianâs attention slides back to me. âSee?â
So now itâs his turn to use Jeremy against me. Itâs not that I donât want him with us, itâs his reason for joining that sits wrong with me.
Heâs keeping an eye on my every move because he doesnât trust me.
Ever since I divulged Lucaâs name, heâs been asking me all sorts of questions about him. His last name, family details, and everything in between. Surprisingly, I didnât have any trouble answering those. However, I couldnât tell him about the other part. The âI agreed to spy on you for Lucaâ part.
Weâre barely getting out of a sensitive phase and falling into some sort of understanding. I canât just ruin it.
Adrian kisses and hugs me again. He doesnât look at me like he wants to hate-fuck me, then throw me away.
And I want to hold onto what we have for as long as I can. But Yan is rightâIâll tell him all about it.
Soon.
We go into several shops and I buy some jeans and try on a few low-cut dresses that Adrian shakes his head at. When I come out of the dressing room in a short red dress with a deep décolletage, Adrian glares.
âYouâre beautiful, Mommy,â Jeremy says from his position next to his father.
âThank you, my angel. At least you have the sense to say that.â I run my hand over the soft material, glaring back at Adrian.
âYou are beautiful, but youâre not going outside like that.â
âI used to be in ballet, remember? We wore shorter outfits.â
âBut youâre not anymore and this is no ballet performance. You wonât be wearing a short dress.â
I scrunch my nose, then mutter under my breath, âI bet you didnât think they were short when you were stalking me.â
âI heard that,â he says as I turn around and head to the changing room.
Of course, he did. Itâs like he has superpowers when it comes to these types of things.
Still, I grin at his tone and the way his gaze keeps following me even as I walk away.
At the checkout, I slip a few dresses between my other purchases behind Adrianâs back. He only hands her his card and doesnât care for whatâs in the bags.
Outside the boutique, Boris offers to take the bags for me. I tell him Iâm fine, but Adrian practically yanks them from my hand and shoves them at his guard.
Heâs impossible sometimes.
We get chocolate milkshakes and sit on a bench. Or more like, Jeremy and I do. Adrian just watches us with rare satisfaction as we slurp in unison. Soon after, Jeremy says he has to use the bathroom and Adrian takes him, leaving both Kolya and Boris with me outside.
I stare at them. âArenât you tired of standing all day?â
âWeâre fine,â Kolya grunts.
âYouâre really as grumpy as Yan says.â
He lets out a sound that resembles a scoff but doesnât say anything.
âI feel bad for leaving him at home.â I sigh. âDo you think heâs all right?â
âThe doctor said heâs healing and heâs moving, so it should be fine.â
âMaybe Iâll buy him somethingâ¦â
âPlease donât.â Kolya stares at the bathroom door.
âYeah, donât,â Boris agrees. âUnless you want to witness his murder at Bossâs hands.â
I roll my eyes and continue slurping from my milkshake.
âLia?â
My head turns to the side at the familiar voice. Stephanie, the choreographer from New York City Ballet, walks toward me at a brisk pace.
Boris gets between her and me, his frame shadowing her petite body.
I stand up. âItâs okay, Boris. Let her through.â
He begrudgingly moves and she joins me, her gaze wary as she observes the two guards. I canât help the smile that moves to my lips at the sight of her. âHey, Steph.â
âHey, girl!â She hugs me and I do the same before we pull back and sit down. âLook at you, alive and well. I thought you left the country.â
âNo, still here.â
âMarried, too.â She points at my finger.
âYeah. I also have a five-year-old son.â
âWhoa. You changed, Lia. If Philippe were to see you, heâd be weeping. He always said you were his only muse and nothing would change that. He was depressed afterâ¦what happened.â
I smile a little. âHave you guys been well?â
âYou know, the usual.â
âI saw Giselleâs posters. I wish you guys all the best.â
âThanks. You can come if you want toâ¦â she backpedals. âOr not. No pressure.â
âIâll think about it.â
Thinking about ballet still hurts, but I believe Iâm at a point in my life where Iâm able to move on, even if not entirely.
âYouâll love the male lead for this one.â
I laugh. âWhat? Ryan no longer leads?â
She frowns. âRyan stopped leading six years ago. Since you.â
âWhat?â
âHe disappeared the day you broke your leg, Lia. No one knows where he is.â
âReally?â
âWe searched everywhere for him and his family even filed a missing person report, but the police couldnât find a trace of the man.â
Oh.
âSo he disappeared after my accident?â
âYes. At first, we thought he felt guilty, but when we couldnât reach him, something seemed off. Itâs Ryan, after all. He wouldnât blow a performance, no matter how guilty he felt.â
The arrogant Ryan. The selfish Ryan.
Theâ¦Ryan who had a strike with Adrian.
Oh. My. God.
He couldnât have.
âWe have Joel lead now and heâs a darling. He made Hannah shrink her bitch behavior a little. Sheâs been trying and failing to get to your level. Not to be biased or anything, but youâll always be my and Philâs favorite. I know life goes on and all, but itâs simply not the same without you.â
I smile at her, and she goes on and on about how Philippe is making her life hell and how heâs become a grumpy old man.
However, all I can think about is the information she just gave me.
The fact that Ryan disappeared six years ago.
And that my husband is most likely behind it.
