But Conor wasn't like that. As a highly competent assistant, his role was to ease his boss's concerns. He had to be flexible and perceptive, acting as a mediator between Nicole and Jarrod. He knew how to phrase things so that Nicole felt compelled to agree.
Sensing Nicole's hesitation, Conor quickly added, "Miss Lawrence, the doctors can't get Mr. Schultz to listen. I wouldn't ask you if it wasn't necessary. Mr. Schultz instructed us not to disturb you, butâ¦"
Conor paused and continued, âThere are countless pending decisions at the Schultz Group and numerous meetings awaiting Mr. Schultz. I cannot keep a constant eye on Mr. Schultz, and so many people depend on him. âI am desperate for his speedy recovery.â
Conor's words, while not directly accusing Nicole of negligence, conveyed the staff's helplessness, making her request difficult to refuse.
Nicole, still undecided, said, âI appreciate your hard work, Conor. If I have time, I'll visit you.â
Nicole was noncommittal. She said she would come if she had time. What did âif she had timeâ mean? She was already here. But Conor didn't dare press the issue. âVery well, Miss Lawrence, you go ahead and take care of your own business first. But if you can, pay Mr. Schultz a visit.â
Nicole nodded and left with the thermos in her hand. When she returned to the infusion room, Rhett seemed asleep.
Nicole didn't wake him and waited in silence, noticing the dark circles under his eyes that suggested he hadn't slept well.
Given the trauma Rhett had suffered, it was no surprise that he hadn't slept well. Despite this, he displayed remarkable composure under the circumstances.
When the nurse arrived to remove the IV, Rhett woke up. Dressed in full protective gear, the nurse carefully removed the IV. The room was private because they were aware of Rhett's condition.
After applying a patch, the nurse reminded Rhett that he could not leave the hospital tonight and that he needed to stay for observation to monitor for fever.
Rhett, realizing that Nicole was still there, felt a pang of embarrassment. âMiss Lawrence, you have been a great help. âI am sorry for the inconvenience.â
âIt's no bother,â Nicole replied with a reassuring smile. âIt's the least I could do.â She handed the water to Rhett, and just then, her phone rang. It was the delivery man.
Nicole had ordered a pot of rice soup for Rhett, thinking he needed something light to eat. Unable to cook for him, she had chosen a highly rated restaurant on the delivery app.
Nicole stood up from her seat. âIâll go get the congee.â
"No need, Miss Lawrence. I'm not hungry," Rhett said.
But as soon as he spoke, his stomach grew loudly, betraying his words. He felt a flush of embarrassment, and Nicole found it heartbreaking that he still didn't want to bother anyone.
âHonestly, itâs my pleasure,â Nicole said softly. âLet me do something for you. âIt will make me feel better.â
Rhett hesitated, then spoke with surprising frankness: âMiss Lawrence, believe it or not, I do not blame you at all. This strange occurrence that has happened to me can only be attributed to fate. âIt is no one's fault.â
Nicole was surprised by his frankness, she hadn't expected it.
"Sometimes life forces you to believe in destiny," Rhett said, his expression enigmatic.
âFate can be changed,â Nicole replied with determination. âNo matter what happens, we just have to do the best we can.â
