Chapter 1580
Love Unbreakable by Bank Brook
Chapter 1580:
? ? ? ? ?
Brett sounded doubtful. âWho is she?â
Callie didn't expect her father to care about this detail. She looked at Nicole and said, "A nice lady. She even called the police to help her."
Brett, being older and naturally more cautious, asked skeptically, âCallie, are you really okay?â
"I'm fine. I'm not hurt, all thanks to her arriving just in time," Callie was immensely grateful to Nicole and now saw her as a heroine.
âOkay, be careful on your way,â Brett said nothing more and ended the call.
Nicole felt a surge of relief knowing that Brett was in Ardlens and that she would see him soon. Callie, now calmer, managed to strike up a conversation with Nicole. âMiss, how did you end up there? Itâs such a deserted place, and youâre so brave.â
Nicole simply said that she was just passing by and said nothing more. Seeing Callie so innocent, Nicole felt a pang of guilt and found herself at a loss for words. Nicole remembered how much Callie adored her when she was a child.
Callie used to cling to her and Nicole always made time to visit her. However, as school took over Nicole's time, their contact became less frequent. Also, Callie wasn't receiving treatment at a hospital in Ardlens at the time, so Nicole only saw Callie at Christmas.
Technically, Callie should have recognized Nicole, but the shock and the poor lighting in the car probably prevented her from noticing who Nicole was. Nicole was thankful that Callie was in the backseat, which made it difficult for her to recognize her.
If Callie had recognized her, Nicole wouldn't have known what to say. Although she felt guilty about using Callie, she didn't regret anything.
Nicole was desperate to find out the truth about what the last person to see her father before he died had witnessed and why he had disappeared in Ardlens. She needed to know the truth by all means.
Callie looked at Nicole's reflection in the car window and suddenly asked, "Miss, what's your name?"
Nicole's hand shook slightly on the steering wheel as she answered, "My name is Evita."
Nicole lied and gave a fake name. Callie overheard and muttered, âEvita, you look like someone I know.â
Nicole realized Callie was talking about her. With a slight smile, she said, âI have one of those faces that people often mistake for someone else.â
Callie was quiet for a moment and then continued looking at Nicole's reflection in the car window.
âThe nice lady I knew was very kind. When I was little, she would bring me presents and sweets I had never seen before. My father wouldn't let me eat them for my health, but she let me lick them secretly so I could taste their sweetness. She told me that if I followed the doctor's advice and got better, I could eat all the sweets I wanted when I grew upâ¦â
Nicole gripped the steering wheel tightly. She was surprised that Callie could remember such things so vividly. She laughed and asked, âDid you follow her advice and take good care of your health?â
Callie agreed and replied, âI do what the doctor says and I get some treatments. Now the doctor says I can live for many years.â
âThat's wonderful!â Nicole said, genuinely happy for her.
Callie continued to stare at Nicole's reflection in the car window. She pressed her lips tightly together and remained silent. Soon after, they arrived at the destination Callie had mentioned.
Nicole parked the car and looked around, finding no one in sight. A feeling of unease settled in her chest and prompted her to scan the area.
