Before Nicole could even begin to react, she found herself being pushed forcefully into the water, plunging into the depths where a fast-moving drainage channel awaited her and would quickly sweep her away in its current.
Roscoe had orchestrated it with meticulous precision. His knowledge of the drainage canal's location, along with Nicole's swimming skills, which he had personally honed, were key elements in his plan to send her away.
During his time in the village, Roscoe had taken to teaching Nicole various survival skills, including swimming, archery, basic combat and self-defense techniques, ensuring that she was equipped to handle dangerous situations.
As the water rushed around them, Nicole could faintly make out the frantic voices of the witches from the shore, interspersed with the painful moan of a man, before a deep silence enveloped their surroundings.
Fear gripped Nicole's heart as she realized that Roscoe's sobriety might have been exposed. Despite her efforts to swim against the powerful current, she was soon overwhelmed by her strength.
The mountain drainage channels were like raging torrents, especially during the rainy season, leaving even the strongest swimmers defenseless.
Exhausted and defeated, Nicole reluctantly surrendered to the current, letting it dictate its course.
When she finally dared to open her eyes, she found herself inside a humble straw hut. Panic gripped her, fearing that she had fallen into captivity again.
A gentle-faced old man approached. âYoung lady, are you awake? Would you like some water?â he asked, offering her a bottle, sincerity shining in his eyes.
He had the unassuming appearance of a mountain dweller, a stark contrast to the ominous witches Nicole had encountered earlier. Although he let his guard down a bit in the presence of the old man, he remained alert.
Accepting the water graciously, Nicole refrained from drinking immediately. âSir, where exactly am I?â she asked curiously.
"This is Mount Yienswart," replied the old man.
Mount Yienswart? Nicole realized. She had crossed the valley and entered another mountainous region.
Roscoe's warning about the difficulty of seeking help echoed in Nicole's mind as she looked out at the remote surroundings, devoid of any signs or means of communication.
Even if she managed to find help, the journey out of this isolated place would take at least a week, and it would probably take another week for rescuers to arrive. By then, the witches would have disappeared without a trace.
