Ethel smiled. âKiki!â
Nicole smiled back. Then, pausing briefly, she gently removed the jade pendant from around her neck and placed it tenderly in Ethel's palm. âI greatly appreciate your efforts in unearthing my fatherâs case. Please take this as a token of my gratitude.â
âPlease take it. âItâs too valuable,â Ethel protested, visibly nervous.
Gold might have tangible value, but jade was priceless. This particular piece, impeccably crafted and exquisitely detailed, was certainly of significant value.
âThe value of a gift transcends its monetary value. Considering your unwavering dedication to my fatherâs case, this is the least I can offer you,â Nicole said earnestly. âThank you.â
Regardless of the outcome of the case, Nicole was certain of one thing. Ethel had undeniably given her all to uncovering the truth about Wesson's death.
Ethel seemed hesitant, but finally said, "Kiki, police station protocol prohibits accepting gifts."
âAm I still a stranger to you?â Nicole asked. âIsnât this jade pendant a gift from a friend during your free time?â
Ethel found herself unable to refute Nicole's logic and accepted her point of view. Despite their sparse interactions, a deep bond seemed to have inexplicably formed between them.
Nicole shared Ethel's sentiment, imagining Ethel's resemblance to her little sister in her dreams growing stronger with Ethel's elongated hair and feminine attire.
Placing the jade pendant around Ethel's neck, Nicole recounted its significance.
"My father gave it to me when I turned eighteen. Every year I received two gifts, one for me and one for the sister I once had."
âWhat happened to your sister?â Ethel asked.
"I passed away very young," Nicole said.
âI'm sorry,â Ethel quickly apologized.
"It's okay," Nicole reassured her. "I think he's in heaven now, watching over me with my father."
With a serious look, Nicole said solemnly, âI hope this is your lucky charm. May it guide you safely on every mission.â
âKiki, I am so grateful to you. I will hold this close to my heart,â said Ethel, deeply touched by Nicoleâs sincerity and the meaning of the gift.
Unbeknownst to them, they had already arrived at Brett's residence.
