Jarrod murmured against her neck, his voice muffled, "I said, not in the car. I never mentioned avoiding it at home." His voice had grown hoarse.
And then, all the words dissipated to the rhythm of the bed.
Exhausted, Nicole fell into an immediate sleep. Jarrod rocked her tenderly as he tended to her, making sure she was comfortable in bed.
Nicole was undeniably tired. Today, returning Vicki to where she belonged had provided Nicole with some solace. The emotional strain, coupled with Jarrod's desire for her, had completely exhausted Nicole.
Jarrod tenderly brushed Nicole's hair aside and whispered, "Feel free to confide in me as much as you need, as long as you're happy."
Nicole slept until dawn the next day. At one point, she vaguely sensed a maid waking her up to eat, but she barely indulged in it before falling asleep again.
The next day, the insistent ringing of the phone finally woke her up. âHelloâ¦â she murmured hoarsely.
âMiss Lawrence, this is Ethel.â It was Ethel's clear voice coming from the other end.
"Oh, Ethel."
Nicole muttered. She had saved Ethel's number but lacked the lucidity to check the screen.
âI apologize for yesterday. âI was unexpectedly distracted at work and couldnât get in touch with you,â Ethel apologized.
"It's not a bother at all. I also got distracted and forgot to follow up."
"I have the day off. I intend to pay a visit to Brett's residence."
"Where are you now? Can you wait for me? I'd like to go with you."
Brett was the only person who could shed light on the events leading up to Nicole's father's death. Nicole longed to ask Brett directly.
After arranging a meeting with Ethel, Nicole quickly got up, got ready, and left.
Presenting her with a nutritious soup, the maid said, "Madam, Mr. Schultz ordered that you consume it upon awakening."
âNo, thanks. I have to go,â Nicole replied.
The maid insisted: âPlease help yourself. Otherwise Mr. Schultz will hold me accountable.â
Nicole's expression soured. "No explanation is necessary. Just inform him of my refusal."
âThisâ¦â The maid was clearly distressed.
âWhy don't you drink it?â Jarrod stepped out from around the corner. âWhere are you running to?â
