Chapter 1458:

Ethel rewound the footage. âBut I went through every angle of the building and finally got a clear shot of him at the corner of the second floor. âHe jumped out of a window onto the platform below, dodging the cameras.â
Nicole's suspicions grew. Who would go to such lengths to avoid being seen, unless they were hiding something serious?
Ethel's fingers flew over the keyboard. "Technical analysis confirms that this is the same person who left Mr. Lawrence's office. Miss Lawrence, do you recognize him?"
The footage was grainy and aged, resulting in poor quality. The person's pixelated face and black suit could barely be made out. However, the partial frontal view captured a frustrated expression on the individual's face.
Nicole moved closer, feeling a strange tickling sensation in the back of her mind. âIt's him,â she exclaimed.
Ethel's eyes lit up. "Miss Lawrence, do you recognize this person?"
Ethel had spent countless hours, night after night, piecing together the puzzle of surveillance. She had painstakingly tracked this person frame by frame, finally finding a reasonably clear image.
However, the images were clear enough that someone who knew the person could recognize him. To an unfamiliar eye, it would be nearly impossible to make out any definitive details. Here they were. Nicole had recognized him. Her persistence had paid off.
Nicole agreed. âThatâs Brett, my fatherâs assistant.â
Nicole wouldn't have remembered a normal employee. There were thousands at the Lawrence Group. But Brett, as her father's assistant, had interacted with her often. The scowl on the screen was unmistakably his.
Ethel leaned toward her, urgency in her voice. âDo you know where Brett is now?â
Nicole paused, her mind racing. This revelation opened up a maze of questions she wasn't prepared to face.
The day's meeting had been somber, with all the employees receiving their final severity pay before leaving the company for good. Nicole had no idea where Brett had gotten to. However, the more she thought about it, the more he haunted her.
At his father's funeral, the room had been filled with company employees, all there to honor the man who had been more than just a superior. But Brett, who had owed so much to his father, was nowhere to be found. It made no sense.
Nicole remembered how her mother often spoke of Brett's humble beginnings and how her father had extended a hand to help him rise. Brett had returned that kindness tenfold, working harder than anyone else, often staying up late into the night, determined to provide for himself.
Every year during the holidays, his father would invite Brett and his family over for a festive dinner, and he always gave them generous gifts as a token of his appreciation.
