Upon entering, Nicole found Kamilah lying on the bed, her face pale and lifeless. Tears streamed down Nicole's face as she knelt beside Kamilah's bed, her silent sobs echoing through the room.
âKamilahâ¦â Austin, his voice shaking with fear, gripped Nicoleâs arm tightly as he pleaded, âKamilah⦠Wake upâ¦â
Amidst her despair, Jarrod's voice cut through the confusion, offering a ray of hope. âHeâs still breathing.â
Nicole looked up, her eyes meeting Jarrod's with a mixture of relief and anguish. Despite her weakness, Kamilah was still breathing.
Excitement and relief flooded through Nicole as she hugged Austin. âAustin, I called an ambulance. âHeâs going to be okay,â she reassured with a hopeful smile.
Jarrod assessed the situation critically and said, âWaiting for an ambulance could waste precious time. I'll take her to the hospital myself. âLetâs get the doctor.â
Jarrod quickly removed his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves to lift Kamilah up with careful urgency.
Seeing Nicole on the sidelines, Jarrod quickly delegated a crucial task to her. âNicole, grab Austin and check for traces of soy milk. Get him to the hospital quickly so they can analyze the contents. Itâs vital for accurate treatment and to avoid any misdiagnosis.â
His voice cut through the panic with clear, authoritative directives. His command of the situation contrasted sharply with the confusion that had initially clouded his actions.
Nicole, recognizing the sharpness of his thinking, agreed, spurred on by his confidence. âI will find that drug and take her to the hospital immediately.â
âOkay.â As Jarrod prepared to leave with Kamilah, I offered one last consolation. âAnd don't worry. Even if you don't find the soy milk, the hospital will figure out how to run tests on her. âIâll make sure we have the best doctor on this.â
Nicole was caught off guard by Jarrod's reassurance. His unexpected but reassuring words gave her courage.
Jarrod could feel the weight of the personal tragedies weighing on Nicole. Nicole had weathered the storm of her father's death and her mother's debilitating illness, and now she was facing another crisis that threatened to push her over the edge. She hadn't broken under the strain, but she was close. She was only hanging on by a thread.
Jarrod understood the important role that Kamilah played in Nicole's life, not just as Austin's caretaker, but as a stabilizing presence in her own right. This made him even more determined to rectify the situation, feeling a deep sense of responsibility. His earlier carelessness regarding Vicki's malicious intentions had put his loved ones in danger, and he was painfully aware of his role in the unfolding drama.
After Jarrod rushed to deal with the emergency, Austin and Nicole searched the house for traces of drugs.
