Chapter 1340:
? ? ? ? ?
âOkay, dumb ass. Head to base.â Evelyn hung up, ignoring Nicole's surprise. She smirked. âWell, still holding on, huh?â
Nicole realized she had jumped from the frying pan into the fire.
Evelyn seemed harmless and even helped her to report to the police. Who would have thought that she was also a thief in disguise?
âWho⦠who the hell told you to do this?â Nicole asked, her voice shaking with shock.
But before she could finish her question, her body betrayed her, collapsing like a sack of potatoes. She realized there was something strange about the towel she had just used.
It was all he had time to think before he passed out.
Evelyn watched Nicole faint and laughed. âYou've lasted longer than most, but it doesn't matter in the end.â
With a satisfied smile, he started the car and drove away.
Nicole had no idea how long she had been unconscious. When she came to, she was in a filthy wooden shack. It was cramped and looked like a makeshift hiding place.
His limbs were tied and he felt like a bag of bones, probably from the drug that had been injected into him.
She fought against the ropes, but they might as well have been made of steel. Frustrated, she stopped, conserving her energy as she took in her surroundings and tuned into the sounds beyond the walls.
From what he could gather, there were probably two thumbs on guard duty, trading shifts. Ten minutes ago, I had heard chatter outside, followed by silence. Now, only a couple of footsteps echoed in the darkness.
Shortly after, the wooden door of the hut opened with a groan.
A man with a bandage on his head came in. He was the driver who had kidnapped Nicole that night.
He walked in and slammed the door, his eyes filled with rage.
âYou fucking bitch!â he spat, venom dripping from his words.
"I've been transporting people for years, but I've never been hit like that. I'm furious."
Nicole assumed that this person was deeply involved in human trafficking.
His words spoke of years of experience ruining lives. Countless souls had been screwed because of him.
scum like him.
âWhy are you doing this? âI donât even know you,â Nicole asked, fearing.
Being aggressive wouldn't help her now. Nicole knew she had to be smart, avoid getting hurt, and conserve her energy for a possible escape attempt.
âOf course you don't know me. If you did, I wouldn't be doing this,â the man replied, rubbing his hands together as he approached. Without warning, I kicked Nicole hard.
"Remember what I told you? About breaking your legs that night? It's time to keep my promise," he said.
Nicole won at the pain of the kick to her leg bone. âPlease, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I just want to liveâ¦â
The man looked at her maliciously. âDo you still think you deserve to live? You would be better off sold to a place where death was a mercy,â he sneered.
Terrified, Nicole asked, âWhat kind of place is that?â
