The woman in glasses, showing her relaxed attitude, replied: "Sure. I'll call them soon."
The woman seemed to be worried about Nicole's nerves, as she turned on the speakerphone, connecting to a seasoned operator on the other end.
âHello, Ardlens Police Department. What is the problem?â
The woman with glasses replied: âHi, I came across an injured girl on the road, probably attacked. She is stranded. Could you please send help?â
"Do you have a name?"
The woman with glasses turned to Nicole and asked, "Miss, what is your name?"
Nicole shared her name and explained: âSomeone kidnapped me. It was a stranger. I have his license plate numberâ¦â
"Understood, I'll send an officer soon. Don't hang up."
After the call ended, Nicole's tense demeanor relaxed a little. The woman in glasses extends another invitation to her.
âMiss, why don't you get in my car and relax for a while? It's pouring rain and your shoulder is still bleeding. If you keep this up, you won't last until the police get hereâ¦â
After the call, Nicole let her guard down with the woman. Plus, the woman had just spelled out her ID and name to the operator. Her name appeared to be Evelyn Quinn.
Nicole agreed. âOkay.â
Once in the car, Evelyn pulled a towel from the passenger seat compartment and offered it to Nicole. âHere, wipe yourself off. âYou donât want to catch a cold.â
"Thank you." Nicole accepted the towel and dried her face and wet hair.
Nicole coughed lightly. She sneezed.
âThank you very much, Mrs. Quinn,â Nicole said, politely handing the towel back to her.
âYou're welcome.â Evelyn threw the towel on the passenger seat, lit a cigarette and leaned her elbow on the window. âIâve been waiting here for you.â
The rain drowned out Evelyn's voice. Nicole asked, "Excuse me, what was that, Mrs. Quinn?"
Evelyn smiled and said, âOh, nothing.â
At that moment Evelyn's phone range. She smiled weakly, saying, "Oops, I have to answer it."
Evelyn answered the call via Bluetooth, and Nicole could hear every word. âEvelyn, damn it! That girl ran awayâ¦â
Nicole's heart raced. That voice...
Evelyn remained cool and replied, âI know. You're useless. That girl is with me now. âNo payday for you, idiot!â
âDamn, youâre skilled!â The man on the other end sounded impressed.
Losing a target was a huge bummer in his line of work. He'd rather get nothing than lose someone.
