Chapter 1272:

But after the crash, Derek had made a call to Alec, and Jarrod wanted to pick up any clues about his location by hearing in.
Alec's voice could be heard on the recording. "What's taking you so long? Are you here yet?"
Derek took a deep breath before answering, âNot yet. I almost got lost. That crazy woman was driving like a crazy woman and I ended up crashing into a treeâ¦â
Alec hesitated and advised, âShe may not be as strong as you, but she is smart. Be careful.â
âI know⦠Damn it! âIâll kill her today.â Derek assumed that Nicole had seen the tree in front of her and had intentionally swerved at the last moment, causing her car to crash into it.
Derek was no longer just following Alec's orders. He was driven by a murderous rage, determined to kill Nicole.
Alec didn't fully trust Derek, he was worried that Derek would handle things poorly.
He thought for a moment before suggesting, âForget it. You should leave the country now. âIâll take care of the rest.â
Alec planned to deal with Leighton and forge a certificate of mental illness for Nicole, rendering Nicole's testimony useless and inadmissible.
But Derek didn't agree and wasn't about to give up: "Give me half an hour and I'll catch up with her..."
âYou didn't crash the car? Where are you now?â Alec inquired.
«She's running down this muddy road, and I'm going after her now..»
Derek's voice stopped abruptly.
The call ended suddenly.
Hearing the ringtone, Jarrod's heart raced with worry. âNicole, you've always managed to escape danger. Donât get into trouble this time.â
His eyes narrowed as he floored the accelerator and took off.
Suddenly, it began to rain heavily, intensifying the pain in Nicole's wounds. The pain sapped her energy, leaving her weak and powerless. She was already fragile, and recent events had sapped her strength completely.
Nicole hid behind a clump of muddy bushes, trying to curl up as small and inconspicuous as possible. She was exhausted, on the verge of falling asleep, when she heard footsteps approaching, an irregular rhythm in the distance.
In the absolute darkness of the night, I knew the only person wandering outside could be Derek.
With the rain erasing all traces, she had no hope that anyone would come to rescue her.
The torrential rain made the search difficult. Even if Raegan had sent out a search party, Nicole doubted she would survive long enough for them to arrive.
Holding on tight, Nicole not only tried to minimize her visibility, but also held her breath, afraid that Derek might detect her presence. Considering the physical advantage men typically had over women, combined with her weakened state, if Derek found her, she would have to accept whatever came next.
As he had anticipated, footsteps came closer, followed by the sound of a stick being pushed through the bushes.
âMiss, stop hidingâ¦â Derekâs voice echoed through the rain-soaked forest, sending shivers down Nicoleâs spine, especially in the darkness of the night.
