But her car remained stubborn and unresponsive, and she made several attempts to start it. Meanwhile, Derek's car was almost upon her.
Finally, the engine roared. Nicole gripped the steering wheel tightly and swerved to the side to avoid the impending collision with Derek.
In terms of speed, his old manual car was no match for Derek's vehicle. At the moment, his only option was to avoid it and flee.
As he swerved, Derek's silver sedan slammed hard into the left rear of his car, causing a loud crash.
The impact forced the trunk open, but Nicole was too busy to worry about that. She floored the accelerator and sped away in the opposite direction of the silver sedan, buying her some time as Derek turned to chase her.
Just as Nicole had anticipated, the silver sedan had also sustained damage from the crash and had come to a stop several feet away from her.
However, Derek managed to get it started quickly.
At that moment, Derek's phone screen lit up with an unfamiliar number. When I picked up the call, Alec's voice came through. "Have you taken care of that?"
Derek's reply came between labored breaths, his nose bleeding uncontrollably from the impact. "Not successfully yet," he managed to say.
"Can't you handle a sick woman?" Alec's voice was thick with impatience.
"His driving is not bad, in fact it's better than mine. It's the first time I've hit someone. I just didn't know how to handle it well."
âDo it quickly,â Alec ordered, distant and cold.
Trembling, Derek pleaded, âCan I leave him? Please find someone else. I can leave tonight and promise never to come back. Isnât that enough?â
Derek didn't want to get involved in this anymore. He just longed to escape quietly. Exchanging materials was one thing, but committing murder was something he couldn't fathom.
Derek had initially accepted money from Alec, agreeing to have Leighton transport the blood samples with the understanding that he would flee the country once the job was done.
However, Derek and Leighton had already been involved before, and he had planned one last date before his departure, which delayed him. He intended to sneak away the next day by routes that would leave no trace.
However, when the situation escalated when Nicole confronted him, Derek called Alec in a panic, not anticipating that Alec would demand Nicole's outright murder.
However, Nicole was a living person. Derek couldn't bring himself to kill her.
âYou can leave it, of course,â Alec replied dismissively.
Derek felt relieved. âThank you! You're a good man. I'll keep my mouth shut, I promise..."
"But give me back the money I paid you and I won't pay you the rest," Alec replied coldly.
Derek's heart sank. "But it doesn't work like that."
He protested: âI have finished the job. How can you not pay? We had an agreement. If you break it, I may not keep quiet.â
âThen speak now. If that woman doesn't die today, she'll expose everything. She's onto you. There's more than money at stake. Prepare for the worst,â Alec replied.
