Chapter 273
My Mute Bride
Chapter 273 Indecency âPresident Hudson.â Luther acted as if Rachel had come to save him, heaving a sigh of relief. As expected, her arrival alleviated the tension on Justinâs face. Justin then waved his hand to dismiss Luther. âHave the others prepare for the meeting in ten minutes. I want a solution.â
âAt once, President Burton. By the way, President Gunson is back, and he should be attending the meeting later.â Hearing the name âGunson,â Justin immediately scowled. âGot it.â
After Luther exited the room, Justin asked Rachel, âWhy did you come? You went home pretty late yesterday. Didnât I tell you to take a good rest at home?â
âI brought you breakfast.â Rachel gently shook the bag in her hand. âI made some soup for you.â
âYou didnât have to, you know? I couldâve asked Frankie to buy something for me.â
âSo you donât want them? Guess thatâs my cue to leave, then.â Saying that, she pretended as if she was about to leave, but was swiftly stopped by Justin. She tripped herself, but Justin managed to save her from the fall. They looked each other in the eyes.
The man then answered, âOf course, I do. I just didnât want you to overwork yourself.â
Rachel revealed a subtle smile. âA simple breakfast canât tire me. Come, eat up.â
âDonât leave yet. You have some too. Iâm going for a meeting very soon.â
âAlright.â And so, Rachel accompanied Justin in the office. Watching as he ate, she started inquiring about Lutherâs words earlier. âIs âPresident Gunsonâ the guy whom your uncle recognized to be his godson?â
âUh-huh. How did you know?â
âHeard about him six years ago, but Iâve never once seen him. He must be working at the companyâs overseas branch and didnât have time to return.â
Justin replied, âJason transferred him back five years ago.â
In fact, the âPresident Gunsonâ whom Luther referred to as was named Robin Gunson, and he was Jasonâs godson. Jason had a daughter named Tina, who was sent abroad for her mental disorder to be treated six years ago. With his wife dying in a car accident, all he had left was his godson. Based on what Rachel knew, Robin was highly obedient and loyal to his godfather.
Justin added, âItâs pretty apparent why Jason had him transferred back here. As heâs no longer in Burton Group, he would do whatever it takes to have someone he trusts to stay in the company, and Robin is the perfect candidate.â
Rachel pondered for a while and stated, âRegardless of Jasonâs trust, at the end of the day, Robin isnât his own son.â
âWhat are you getting at?â
âI shall join the meeting later as well.â
Initially, Justin excluded Rachel from this matter. After all, with Jason involved, things had become rather touchy. However, he approved of Rachelâs participation in the meeting after seeing how determined she was.
At the meeting room, Justin and Rachel arrived late, and they were greeted by a manâs voice from the meeting table. âThereâs been a major problem, yet you still took your time to indulge in your breakfast before coming to the meeting. Arenât you awfully calm?â
Tracking the source of the voice, Rachel saw Robin for the first time. He had a wide jaw and facial features that made him appear strict. His utterance, stiff and mechanical, belonged to no one his age.
And to be honest, rather than a godson, he looked like he was Jasonâs biological son.
âIs this my ex sister-in-law before me?â Robin glanced at Rachel with his condescending, scornful eyes.
With that, Rachel scowled, but before she could say a word, Justin shot Robin a leer. âGet out if youâre not here for the meeting.â
âIâm just kidding, Justin. Why so serious? Iâll apologize to her, but Iâm sure she doesnât mind, right?â
Rachel calmly looked at him and briefly introduced herself. âPresident Gunson, you may call me Chris.â
Robinâs mockery was nothing but hollow words to Rachel. Regardless, he brought up another matter.
âIâve heard that Chris was responsible for the project in Phase Three Land. Why did you withdraw from the project just because of a minor setback?â
The other staff members were so nervous that they dared not utter a single word. Every one of them knew the reason Justin had Rachel pulled out of the project was to shield her from any possible conflict with the force behind the demolition team. Despite knowing the answer, Robin bluntly challenged them.
Maintaining a straight face, Rachel replied, âI wouldnât be here in this meeting if Iâd withdrawn from the project.â
âOh? So youâve come up with a solution?â
âMy solution doesnât matter. Rather, given how you ignored everything else and rushed back to Burton Group, Iâd assume youâve returned with the perfect answer to help us out.â
Robin felt utterly flattered. Whether Rachelâs words were sincere or not, they succeeded in gratifying him, to which he snapped his fingers. âPerceptive, not bad. Indeed, Iâve heard about the problem in Burton Group, so I hurried back from abroad. Perhaps you should let me tend to this matter.â
Justin icily interrogated, âAnd how do you wish to âtendâ to it?â
Robin crossed his arms and lay against the back of the chair. âDonât you worry about that, Justin. After all, Iâve always handled the PR side of the company. I assure you that Iâll have the entire situation resolved by tomorrow morning. How difficult can a mere holdout be?â
âA mere holdout?â Justin sneered, âIâm warning you, itâs best you keep your crooked ways away from this. If you end up aggravating the problem, I wonât clean up your mess.â
âCrooked ways? Thatâs not fair, is it? Are you implying that Iâm worth nothing to the company?â
Rachel had never seen anyone bold enough to defy Justin right in his face. Back when Jason was still in Burton Group, even he had to hold back against his nephew. Nonetheless, Robin was either too courageous or too dense to underestimate him. Feeling the atmosphere getting colder and seeing that nobody dared to speak up, she suddenly interrupted, âIâm sure President Gunson wishes only kindness. Since it has already come to this anyway, why donât we give him a chance, President Burton?â
Justin gazed at Rachel in confusion.
Feeling even more satisfied, Robin deeply quizzed, âHow are you blinder than a woman, Justin?â
However, Justin, having no intention to entertain the idiotic Robin, knew Rachel had her own plans.
âSure, but you only have half a day. Present your solution by tonight.â
âSo be it.â
After the meeting ended, Justin stopped Rachel. âWhy did you want him to handle it?â
âWell, since you were talking about his crooked ways, I got curious on how low heâll stoop to get to the roots of our problem.â
Thanks to his wit, Justin was able to understand her implication.
Seeing that the man was staring at her, Rachel touched her own face. âIs there something on my face?â
All of a sudden, Justinâs eyes darkened, and he held her hands. âI donât want you to overthink things, Rachel. Just leave them to me.â
Rachel frowned, not knowing what he meant by that.
Before she could comprehend his words, Justin continued, âWhile Robin handles the issue, Iâll have Frankie keep an eye on him just in case.â
âOkay.â
In a double-story villa in the suburb of Riverdale, Jason was indulging in some tea. âShe really said that?â
âYeah, everyone in the meeting room heard that. Youâre being paranoid about her, Godfather. That Rachel woman is as thick as two short planks. Sheâs just a pretentious wh*re thatâs trying to get remarried to Justin.â
