Chapter 189
My Mute Bride
Julian didnât even look at his mother. Instead, he asked Rachel, âAre you alright? Is Charlotte fine?â
Rachel shook her head.
âYou guys go on ahead. Iâll deal with this.â Julian held Rachelâs shoulders and pushed her out of the ward.
If it werenât for the fact that Sue was Julianâs mother, Rachel would have doubled down on the insults and violence. The moment she got out of the ward, she ran into someone familiar. âI thought youâre on a business trip.â Rachel was surprised.
âNot until tomorrow morning.â Justin answered.
âSo everything Sue said earlierâ¦â
âI heard it.â
Since he was acting calm, Rachel thought he was on Sueâs side, and she sneered silently. Guess theyâre birds of a feather, huh?
Julian came out a short while later.
Before he could say anything, Sue went past him, looking furious. Apparently, Julian told her something, so she only glared at Rachel and left without a word.
Julian said, âMy mother can be annoying sometimes, Rachel. Just ignore her.â
âItâs fine. I donât mind.â Rachel smiled at Julian. âThanks for helping me out. I mean it.â
At the side, however, Justinâs face fell.
Julian lifted his wrist and looked at the time. âWhy donât I treat you to a meal? As an apology for my motherâs behavior.â
âNo need for that.â
âSure!â
Justin was the one who said no, but Rachel took the offer.
Justin asked, âWhyâd you say yes? Charlotte just got out of hospital. She needs to heal up. What if she gets herself sick again from this?â
Charlotte tugged on his suit pants and blinked at Justin. âBut I wanna go, Daddy.â
âI love democracy. Itâs decided, then. Come on, Charlotte, letâs go.â
Julian picked Charlotte up and left. âChop chop, you two.â After he was gone, only Rachel and Justin were left.
Justin looked furious, but Rachel only felt like laughing. âYou canât be jealous, can you, Justin?â
âAre you mad?â Justin stared at her like she was insane.
âSo why are you worried? Weâre just gonna go have a simple, ordinary meal.â
Veins started popping on Justinâs forehead.
Suddenly, Rachel stood on tiptoe and inched closer to him, their noses almost touching. âYouâre nervous, Justin.â She put her hand on his shoulder, and his heart skipped a beat. âAnd your heartâs beating pretty loudly.â A smile curled her lips, sucking him in. Just as he was immersed in her smile, she patted his shoulder. âIâll be going, then.â
The sound of her heels bellowed into the corridor, and Justinâs face fell. As he saw her off, he started clenching his fists. Sheâs playing me like a fiddle.
Charlotte and Rachel were sitting together in the restaurant, while Julian and Justin took up the other side.
Rachel was about to get her drink after it was served, but Julian stopped her. âHold it.â He tested the temperature and handed it back to the waiter right in front of Rachel. âWe donât want this. Please get us a cup of hot black tea.â
âBut I donât want black tea!â Rachel protested.
However, Julianâs decision was final. âYou know you have a bad stomach. Iced coffee is off limits.â
Rachel pouted.
Justin thought that the overly friendly conversation was hurting his ears.
Suddenly, Charlotte looked up. âMommy, do you have a bad stomach?â
Rachel patted her head. âNo, I donât. Julian is just overreacting.â
Julian answered, âIâm not overreacting. You just donât care about your body. Charlotte, do you want your mommy to be healthy, or do you want her to suffer from stomach ache all the time?â
Charlotteâs eyes widened. âI want her to be healthy, of course.â She quickly pushed Rachelâs salad away. âThis one is cold as well, so you shouldnât eat this, Mommy. Have some soup. Great-grandpa told me itâs perfect for people with a bad stomach.â
Julianâs advice apparently worked, since Charlotte spent the whole time keeping an eye on Rachel.
She kept asking her mother to have more veggies and soup.
That slightly annoyed Rachel, but she felt touched as well. For so many years, sheâd thought Charlotte would be angry at her because of her absence, but instead, the girl cared a lot for her.
Julian said, âLooks like you can listen. Though only to Charlotte, I guess. Not me.â
Rachel shrugged. âYes, Dr. Peters. This is for all the time I went against the doctorâs orders.â
Justin frowned, and anger flared in his pitch-black eyes.
After they paid the bill, Julian went to the restroom to wash his hands, then Justin came in. âYou came back all of a sudden. Should have given us a heads up.â
Julian looked at him. âI have work at the hospital. And my motherâs going to hold a big party if I tell her.
Everyoneâs going to be dragged into it, so I figured Iâd come back in secret.â
âYou said youâre busy, but you seem to care about Rachel a lot. Do you have the time for that?â
âItâs been years. Iâm used to it.â
Justin couldnât believe Julian could say that so easily. ââ¦Years?â
âDidnât Rachel tell you? Sheâs been living with me overseas all these years. I was the one who cured her condition as well.â
Justin frowned fiercely.
Julian continued, âOh, and Iâll be working in Riverdale until she leaves.â He wiped his hands dry. âIâll be going out now.â
Justin clenched his fists. She stayed with Julian when she was overseas? But she never told me about that? What is she trying to do?
Rachel and Charlotte were waiting for the men, but only Julian showed up. âWhereâs Justin?â
âHe has work to do. Told me to send you two home first.â
Rachel looked at the restroom pensively.
Charlotte complained, âWhatâs up with Daddy? Heâs going on a trip tomorrow, and god knows when heâll be back. Now youâre telling me heâs working overtime? No wonder heâs still not married at this age.â
âHeâs busy, so itâs understandable.â Julian patted her head. âLetâs go. Iâll take you home.â
âSure.â
Since Charlotte was still recuperating, she fell asleep in Rachelâs arms on the way home.
Julian looked at them through the rear-view mirror. âRachel, are you sure youâre going to stay at Justinâs place?â
