Chapter 1864
Revenge is Best Served After Reborn (James)
That night, the three of them huddled in their tiny, pitch-black roomâjust a cramped 200 square feet with a big mattress they all shared. During the day, the place felt like a claustrophobic cave, but in the slums, it was as good as it got.
They flicked on a hanging bulb, casting a dim light as they gathered around.
âTomorrow, Mr. Elwoodâs coming to hire some bodyguards. What do you think?â Odie asked, having snagged this juicy tidbit from a rich woman at the nightclub. No way was the info off.
âWhatâs there to think about? Mr. Elwoodâs a big deal overseas, going head-to-head with the Pollard family. If we get into the White family, we wonât just be illegal immigrants anymore. Our lives will be way better,â Griffin said, already picturing his big break with the White family. They had some savings and werenât starving, but living like this forever wasnât an option. Without legal papers, their future looked bleak.
To live openly and with dignity, they needed a way out.
âColby, whatâs your take?â Griffin turned to Colby, as he always did when seeking direction.
Colbyâs eyes darkened a bit. âIâm in.â
With Colbyâs nod, Griffin declared, âAlright, Colby and I are going for the White family.â
âHold up, why you two? I could get picked too!â Odie protested.
âNo chance,â Griffin replied with a frown. âDo you even know what it takes to get into the White family? If you donât make it, youâre done for.â
Griffin had a bit of a reputation in the slums. A few small-time bosses had hired him for jobs, so he knew a thing or two about the White familyâs ruthless selection process for bodyguards. Odie might scrape through the first round, but thatâd be it.
âColby, say something! Weâve never split up before,â Odie pleaded, his expression dark.
Colby coolly replied, âYou do you; Iâm not getting involved.â With that, Colby stood up to hit the sack.
âIâm not relying on any woman!â Odie shot back. âIâm gonna make a name for myself with my own skills!â
âStop dreaming. Staying alive is what counts,â Griffin said, giving Odieâs shoulder a reassuring pat before getting up.
If Colby wanted to get to the bottom of it, he needed some clout abroad. Mr. Elwood was getting old, and this was the only chance.
âColby, remember, youâve got to avenge your parents,â his grandfatherâs words echoed in his mind.
No matter how tough the road, he had to pull it off.

Mr. Elwood was a sly, double-dealing guy, but even he had his soft spots. He was old and cared a lot about family.
He even started treating Colby like his own son.
