Chapter 1828
Revenge is Best Served After Reborn (James)
Restless sleep had turned into a bit of a routine. Maybe it was the comforting familiarity of the presence beside her. But this time, Sophie slept like a baby, not a toss or turn in sight.
Late into the night, Gordon wrapped up his work. The room was gently lit by a lone bedside lamp. He slid off his gold-rimmed glasses and rubbed his tired brow. Sophie, again, had kicked off the blanket. With a sigh, Gordon got up, walked over, and tucked her back in. Just as he was about to step away, Sophie reached out and clung to his arm, turning sweetly in her sleep, as if lost in a beautiful dream. She snuggled closer, and Gordon chuckled softly, letting her hold on.
Nearby, a long, plush teddy bear pillow rested next to her. It was a bit worn and faded with time, but it held memories. Heâd given it to Sophie when she was ten. Back then, she always wanted him to stay by her side at night, holding his arm as she fell asleep. To ease her, he gifted her the teddy bear pillow. The day she went back to the Russell familyâs home, she cried her heart out, and he didnât even take her back himself. Sometimes, being too dependent isn't great. He couldnât promise heâd always be there for her, but maybe the teddy bear could.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window, gently waking Sophie. She had a slight headache but felt like she'd slept really well. It was as if someone had sat by her side all night. Looking down at the teddy bear pillow she was hugging, she asked, âWas it you keeping me company last night?â The teddyâs adorable face made her hug it again.
She recalled seeing her brother at the club last night. What happened after that? Sophie felt a bit glum. Her brother had always been against her drinking. He mustâve been upset last night. Just then, Sophie noticed a glass of milk and some hangover pills on the table. Her spirits lifted as she grabbed the pills, bouncing out of bed.
Outside, Rick was just about to knock with breakfast in hand when Sophie swung the door open.
âMs. Sophie?â
âRick, was my brother here last night?â
âI...â
Before Rick could answer, Sophie was already sprinting towards Gordonâs study. âIâll just ask him myself!â
âMs. Sophie!â
But Sophie was already at the study door. Inside, several Aldridge family execs were briefing Gordon. With his gold-rimmed glasses back on, Gordon exuded that cool, aloof vibe that made people keep their distance. He glanced toward the door and noticed Sophie standing there. Calmly, he said, âLetâs pause for now. You can all go.â

The executives filed out, smiling and nodding at Sophie as they passed. After exchanging quick hellos, Gordon stepped out too.
