Chapter 1817
Revenge is Best Served After Reborn (James)
James and Sophie had been traveling across countless cities, with his work laptop collecting dust in some forgotten corner. They roamed through bustling cityscapes, snapping photos and creating memories, and raced down empty streets without a care in the world. These were the adventures Sophie had always dreamed of but never experienced until now.
Being with Sophie felt both incredibly real and like a dream. She still had that innocent glow, her eyes clear and free of any hidden agenda. It struck James how simple her desires truly were.
His mind kept drifting back to their early days as newlyweds in another lifetime. He remembered Sophieâs voice on the phone, filled with a mix of hope and caution as she softly asked, âJames, itâs our first day as a married couple, could you maybe...â
âIâm swamped, talk to my secretary if you need something,â heâd cut her off. His old self always used work as a shield, shattering her hopes time and again. Eventually, Sophie stopped asking for anything, and the sparkle in her eyes dimmed over time.
âJames! Where did you stash my dress?â Sophieâs voice jolted him back to the present.
Snapping out of it, James fished a red dress out of the suitcase. âThis one?â
âYes! Whyâd you just toss it aside?â
âYou tossed it yourself.â
âOh.â
Sophie grabbed the dress, twirling in front of the mirror. âWhat do you think? Pretty, right?â
The red dress was strikingly similar to one sheâd worn at an auction, bold and vibrantâthe kind of red Sophie adored.
âToo bad Iâm hopeless with makeup, or itâd look even better.â
âJust throw on some lipstick; itâll still look good.â
âGreat idea!â
Sophie casually held out her hand to James, âGot any lipstick?â
â...â
So, off they went to the local mall to hunt for some lipstick. As they browsed, a vibrant red caught Jamesâs eye.
âWhatâs up?â Sophie asked.
âTry this one.â
She glanced at the lipstick, its shade reminiscent of winter berries. James picked it up from the shelf.
âExcellent choice, sir. This is our top seller,â the clerk chimed in, as James guided Sophie to a seat.
Realizing James intended to apply it himself, Sophie quickly grabbed his hand. âDo you even know how to do that?â
âNo.â
âThen why are you doing it?â
Sophie looked a bit skeptical, but James seemed unfazed.
âJust sit still.â
â...â
For reasons she couldnât quite place, Sophie found herself obeying. James applied the lipstick with focused care, their proximity close enough to catch each other's scent.
Sophie took a good look at him, realizing he wasnât annoying at allâin fact, he was quite charming.
âWhatâs on your mind?â
âThinking youâre quite handsome.â
Her words almost made James fumble the lipstick.
âNo oneâs ever told you that before?â
âNo.â
âSo, Iâm the first?â
âYeah.â
âNot even that girl you used to like?â

âWell, did she?â
âNo.â
Finishing up, James smiled lightly, âThis oneâs perfect.â
