Hi!!
ââââââââ
That day, Ananya and Amrita were busy working in the office. It was well past lunchtime, yet neither had eaten.
Ananya walked up to Amrita, her hand on her stomach. âAmul Baby, Iâm starving!â
Amrita barely looked up, completely engrossed in her work. Just as she was about to respond, her phone rang. She picked it up without glancing at the caller ID.
âYes?â she said, her voice firm and professional.
âDid you eat, Ritu?â a soft yet commanding voice asked from the other side.
Amrita froze. The familiar tone made her straighten in her chair. âUh⦠no, Mayya,â she replied hesitantly.
âAnd why is that?â Ishika asked, her voice sharp with a hint of anger.
âUmâ¦â Amrita began, but her mind blanked under the weight of Ishikaâs question.
âIsha Amma?â Ananya whispered, her curiosity piqued.
âAnanya? You didnât eat either?â Ishikaâs voice shot up in pitch, and Amrita instinctively pulled the phone away from her ear.
âRitu, put me on speaker,â Ishika ordered sternly.
Amrita sighed, knowing better than to argue, and obeyed.
âWhy didnât you two eat?â Ishika demanded.
âWe⦠itâs justâ¦â Amrita stammered, unable to come up with an excuse.
âIt was work, Isha Ma,â Ananya answered softly, lowering her head as though Ishika could see her.
âWork?â Ishikaâs tone was both incredulous and scolding. âFine. Iâm coming there with food. Youâre eating, both of you!â
âOh, no, no, Mayya! Please donât take the trouble. Just⦠send lunch with someone else,â Amrita interjected quickly, the thought of Ishika storming into the office making her shiver.
From behind them, a stifled laugh broke the tension. Both women turned to see Mahima, sitting at Amritaâs desk, barely holding in her laughter as she worked.
âAlright then,â Ishika said curtly before hanging up.
âI wonder who the traitor is that told Isha Ma we skipped lunch,â Ananya muttered darkly, her eyes narrowing at Mahima.
Mahima feigned innocence. âWhat? I was just doing my job!â
âYour job wasnât to report us to Isha Mayya!â Amrita snapped, her tone sharp.
âOh, but it was!â Mahima retorted, her grin mischievous. âIâm getting paid not just by you but by Ishika Ma too. Iâm just being thorough!â
Amrita and Ananya exchanged a look before turning back to glare at Mahima, who chuckled nervously. Sensing the growing tension, she quickly sought an escape.
âActually, Ritu babyâuh, I mean, Amrita Maâam,â she corrected herself hastily when Amritaâs glare intensified, âI need to grab some files from your PC. Let me get on it.â
Mahima walked over to Amritaâs computer, powered it on, and clicked through without hesitation.
âNoâ!â Amrita yelled, her voice laced with panic, but it was too late.
The moment the desktop loaded, Mahima froze. Her eyes widened in shock. âWhat theâ?â
Curious, Ananya moved beside her to check the screen. The next second, her jaw dropped.
âAa-Aar-Aaryan Bhaiya?â Ananya pointed at the screen, her voice almost a squeak.
There, on the screen, was Aaryanshâs photo set as the wallpaper of Amritaâs PC.
Mahima blinked, then blurted out, âSo this is what youâve always been staring at all day?â
Amritaâs face flushed crimson, though she quickly tried to mask it with an irritated scowl.
âShut up, both of you,â she muttered, attempting to grab the mouse and change the wallpaper, but Mahima blocked her way.
âOh no, this is pure gold!â Mahima said, still gawking at the screen. âYou, the ice queen, are crushing on your husband? This is too good!â
Ananya couldnât hold back her laughter anymore. âOh my god, Amrita! This is priceless! I thought you didnât even like him!â
âI donât,â Amrita said sharply, though her red cheeks betrayed her. âItâs just a⦠coincidence.â
âA coincidence that his picture happens to be your wallpaper?â Mahima teased, crossing her arms. âYeah, sure.â
âItâs an old picture,â Amrita snapped, trying to sound casual but failing miserably. âI just⦠havenât had time to change it.â
âRight,â Ananya said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. âBecause youâre soooo busy staring at it.â
âAnanya!â Amrita groaned, burying her face in her hands.
Mahima smirked. âYou know, I think we should tell Mr Aaryansh about this. Heâll be so flattered.â
âDonât you dare!â Amritaâs head shot up, her eyes blazing.
âRelax, Ritu baby,â Mahima said, waving her hand dismissively. âYour secretâs safe with me⦠for now.â
âMine too,â Ananya added with a grin, though the mischievous glint in her eyes didnât go unnoticed.
Amrita sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. âYou two are impossible.â
âWeâre just observant,â Mahima said with a wink.
As Mahima walked off, Ananya leaned closer to Amrita, whispering, âYou know, Ritu, you can just admit it. You like him.â
âNot another word,â Amrita warned, though her tone had softened.
Ananya simply smirked, following Mahima out of the room, leaving Amrita alone with her thoughtsâand her wallpaper.
