Arnold and Bennett excused themselves and closed the door behind them, providing space for the conversation between Evadne and Chasel.

“Chasel.” Evadne whispered his name.

In that moment, words failed her. Whether it was offering comfort or discussing her elder brother, nothing seemed appropriate.

A few seconds of silence passed between them, feeling like an eternity.

“Evadne. I’m so sorry.” Chasel couldn’t lift his gaze, droplets of sweat streaming down his chiseled cheeks.

Evadne shook her head, her voice a soft caress, “Chasel, you are not to blame for any of this. There’s no need for apologies. Liking someone isn’t a crime, not in the least.”

Chasel’s head remained bowed, like a sinner scorned by thousands, his usual confidence washed away. “Suri was right; I ruined Cassius. If only I had listened to her, none of this would have happened. Pain pricked Evadne’s heart; her voice caught in her throat.
