His Ex wife is a billionaire Chapter 456
His Ex wife is a billionaire (Evadne and Thaddeus) Novel Full Episode
Chapter 456
After a quick shower, Thaddeus, not wanting Evadne to exert herself, scooped her up and carried her to the dining room for dinner.
He had been on the move all day, and his normally crisp white shirt now clung to him, emitting waves of warmth mixed with the scent of masculine exertion.
Evadne found her head spinning, not repulsed by the smell but rather pressing her nose into his chest, inhaling deeply like a kitten that couldnât get enough.
âWhatâs the matter, got an appetite for me?â Thaddeus lowered his head with a low chuckle, his l*ps grazing her forehead.
âEven if I want, youâd have to be squeaky clean, wouldnât you? The smell is just horrible.â Flushing, Evadne averted her gaze, âArenât you usually Mr. Clean? Whatâs with the noâshower today?â
âDidnât get around to it. Iâll take one after we eat.â
Evadne pursed her l*ps, feeling a warm flutter in her heart.
The table was laden with an array of exquisite dishes, some prepared in advance by Alva, just needing a quick heat, so it was all ready in no time. âWow, Alva, you rock!â Evadne clapped her hands in excitement, resembling a joyful schoolgirl.
âMrs. Abernathy, donât flatter me; your cooking skills are way beyond mine! A couple of Mr. Abernathyâs favorites here are your recipes, remember?â Alvaâs smile was genuine.
âIs that so? Iâd forgotten,â feeling a bit embarrassed, Evadne started to tuck into her meal heartily.
She knew Alva meant to praise her, but it inevitably stirred up memories of less happy times. Thaddeus was acutely aware of the hardships she had faced and felt a pang of sorrow as he took a napkin and tenderly wiped her l*ps.
Just as he was about to say something, Evadne swiftly shoved a piece of shrimp into his mouth, âDonât apologize. Didnât we agree to leave the past behind?â
Thaddeus paused, managing a wry smile as he chewed. Indeed, nothing tasted quite as good as when his woman made it.
Suddenly, the sound of the front door opening echoed, and three boisterous men stormed in, instantly filling the villa with a festive, holidayâlike noise. âWow, Evadne, thatâs just not fair, hogging all this food for yourself. Thatâs a bit much, donât you think?!â Arnold, who hadnât eaten all day while reviewing case files, lunged forward and grabbed a pork knuckle, stuffing it into his mouth.
Aaron followed suit, chewing one dish he grabbed fiercely, as if heâd just returned from a hunt, âIâve been interrogating suspects all day; Iâm parched! Need to sink my teeth into some meat to quench this thirst!â
The Ashbourne brothers, usually so polished, were devouring the food like it was their last meal, leaving Thaddeus and Gordon dumbstruck. âThose two, theyâre like mythical beasts, one a gluttonous tiger, the other a voracious wolf.â
Evadne said with a sigh, resting her cheek on her hand, âIf Emeric and Suri saw this, theyâd probably strangle them. Like they never raised âem.â Alva, happy to see the young men enjoying the meal, hurried to invite them to sit, âCome on, thereâs plenty! I even made some pasta, but since Mr. Abernathy isnât fond of it, I didnât bring it out. Would you two like some?â
Arnold and Aaronâs heads bobbed eagerly, âYes, yes, yes! Is there any other stuff?â
Evadne exhaled in exasperation, resting her forehead on her hand, âBe grateful thereâs food at all; youâre asking too much.â
Gordon couldnât stand it any longer and discreetly reminded them, âAhem., Arnold and Aaron, Mrs. Abernathy had a serious fall from her horse. As her brothers, you should at least show some concern, shouldnât you?â
Arnold and Aaron looked at each other, one with a pork knuckle in his mouth, the other gnawing the food crazily, they said in unison, âShe looks fine to me, eating and drinking merrily. Donât create unnecessary panic!â
Gordon was left speechless. Whoâs being heartless here?
Evadne, nestled in Thaddeusâs arms, was shaking with laughter. His strong arm supported her waist gently, content just to watch her laugh.
The presence of both Ashbourne brothers together was a rarity and signified something serious at hand.
Aaron belched, his demeanor suddenly solemn, âElspeth tested positive for drug use in her urine test this afternoon. This is drug abuse, not just misuse of prescription meds. But sheâs denying everything, claiming she thought she was receiving regular beauty treatments from her doctor, Victor, and had no idea about the drugs. She claims sheâs been set up.â
Evadne was stunned.
The treatments given to Elspeth were indeed prepared by Victor. With his extensive pharmacological knowledge, Evadne had trusted him completely in this regard, never suspecting he would administer drugs to Elspeth!
With such a dosage, it was as if he was aiming for her life!
âAaron, this has nothing to do with Victor. Elspeth must be desperate, trying to drag someone down with her by implicating Victor, Evadne insisted, defending Victor.
âEvadne, I know Victor. Heâs received support from our dad, and heâs on good terms with you.â Aaronâs brow furrowed as the brotherly banter faded from his gaze, âBut as a police officer, I must act impartially and follow the law. I canât use my position for personal reasons. Right now, Elspeth is adamant that Victor set her up. Even if her claims are false, we must follow procedure and bring Victor in for questioning.â
Evadneâs lashes drooped, her silence heavy with remorse.
Thaddeusâs brows knitted slightly; he didnât like to see friction between the siblings. While soothing Evadneâs hand in his own, he spoke calmly, âCaptain Ashbourne, we understand itâs part of the investigation. You do what you need to do.â
With that address, âCaptain Ashbourneâ, Aaron felt a renewed respect for the man. But Evadne was unsettled. She knew Aaron was right; she just felt guilty about Victor. She didnât want anyone else to get hurt because of her.
Such a tense atmosphere was rare when the siblings gathered.
Aaronâs heart clenched as he didnât intend to upset his sister. In a low voice, he said, âIâve got to head back to the precinct. Thereâs unfinished business. Arnold, why donât you keep our sis company? Itâs not every day we get to see her.â
Just as he turned to leave, Evadne suddenly sprang up and flung herself at him, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist, âAaron, donât go! I didnât ask you to leave!â
Instinctively, Aaron opened his arms and returned the embrace, his eyes glistening with emotion.
As her halfâbrother, Evadne was just as dear to him as to any full sibling, yet he always felt a step removed. Rare were the moments he could openly express his affection and hug his sister without reservation.
Heâd always held back, too shy to voice the depth of his care for her.
7 thought you were mad at me,â Aaron murmured, his voice barely above a whisper as his hand gently stroked her hair.
Evadne looked up at him, her eyes bright with tears, and shook her head vigorously, âAaron, how could I be mad at you? I know how hard youâve worked â getting into the police academy, joining the detective squad, and now leading it. It hasnât been easy for you. I shouldnât be so willful. I shouldnât mix personal feelings with business. Go do what you have to do. No matter what happens, I support your decisions.â
Gordon watched the tender exchange between Mrs. Abernathy and Aaron, and couldnât help but peek at the bossâs expression.
Sure enough, he looked as foul as a spoiled picnic, as if someone had dropped the entire spread into a cesspit.
Thaddeus took a deep breath, trying to compose himself, but envy still flushed his cheeks a telltale red.
âHey, feeling a bit jealous, are you?â Arnold quipped as he dropped into a chair beside him, grabbing a muffin and shoving it into his mouth, still managing to talk, âIf you canât handle this little sting, how are you going to cope with our Evadne? Youâll be weeping more often than not! Then you wonât just be Unfaithful Thaddeus; youâll be our very own modernâday Heathcliff.â
Thaddeus felt his blood pressure spike, his l*ps pressed into a thin line of restrained irritation, âEven though you are Evadneâs brothers, she has a partner now. And with all due respect, youâre not getting any younger. You should understand the importance of propriety.â
Arnold nearly choked on his muffin, glaring at Thaddeus, âIf Elvis heard you say that, heâd make sure your bright future met an early end.â
âNo, he wouldnât.â Thaddeus arched a brow, âHe couldnât stand his sister being a widow.â
Arnold was speechless.
Aaron was indeed busy, and the case involving Elspeth was no small matter. After all, she was involved in drug trafficking and had more than one life on her conscience. Until her crimes were settled and justice was served for the victims, he would find no peace.
After dinner, they gathered in the living room to discuss matters. Aaronâs phone rang â it was a colleague from the precinct. After the call, his expression darkened noticeably.
âAaron, whatâs wrong?â Evadne asked, her concern evident.
Aaron looked at Thaddeus with a complex gaze, âMr. Abernathy, your dad has hired Elmsworthâs top lawyer to represent Elspeth. Heâs at the precinct now, demanding her bail.â
âDarn it! He thinks he can just bail her out as if the police station is his familyâs kitchen?!â Gordon erupted, âSome lawyers have no conscience, taking any case that comes their way! They claim justice is blind, but it seems more like theyâre slaves to money, the scum of humanity!â
âElmsworth, top lawyer?â Thaddeus and Evadne exchanged a knowing look, âWould that be Cedric Dempsey?â
âYou know him?â Aaron was surprised.
âMore than just know him, heâs an âold friend,â Evadne said with a scornful laugh.
âYeah, a lapdog for the Abernathy Group,â Thaddeusâs pretty eyebrows furrowed. Cedric was ruthless and cunning â no easy adversary.
âWe need to secure Elspethâs conviction quickly. If itâs just for the drugs, with the Abernathy Groupâs influence and Cedricâs defense skills, she might actually get bailed out.â
Arnold looked at Thaddeus gravely, âMr. Abernathy, Iâve seen your momâs file. After twenty years, the evidence link isnât sufficient any longer. If you want file a lawsuit for Elspethâs crime of intentional homicide, chance of winning is slim.â
Evadneâs eyes widened in shock as she stared at Thaddeusâs stern profile. Even Arnold had been consulted. He really had done everything in his power to avenge his mother.
âAlso, in Ericaâs case, Ward was the hitman, Elspeth the instigator, an accessory. But if Cedric manages to deflect the main charges onto Ward, she might only serve a decade or so, not the death penalty,â Arnold added, stating another harsh reality.
The air grew thick, oppressive with tension.
âArnold, we have Ericaâs recordings before she died. They contain conversations between Elspeth and Glynnis. Canât those be used to convict Elspeth?â Evadne asked, desperation in her voice.
Arnold shook his head helplessly. âThose are clearly unauthorized recordings and canât be submitted as court evidence.â
Evadne slumped, weakened, into Thaddeusâs embrace, her hope and anger draining away.
The man wrapped his arms around her, his hand steadying her trembling shoulders, as he calmly said, âI understand that even if I find the accomplice who helped Elspeth murder my mom, I would only have a testimony. But what if I say I have physical evidence?â
