Chapter 345
Evadne swallowed her surprise, hiding the âHow could it be you?â that was on the tip of her tongue.
Avery, immaculately dressed in a black suit, led a magnificent horse that shimmered like a constellation in the night. He looked like a prince straight out of a medieval castle.
âJust checking up on you.â
âHowâs your injury? You need at least two months of rest. And what about the cast on your arm?â Evadne couldnât help but worry about him, remembering the frightful incident.
âWith you worried about me, I wouldnât fear even the worst of injuries.â Avery looked at her with an affectionate gaze.
Evadne found herself lost for words.
âI came not only to see you but to bring this. You left ih a hurry last time and couldnât take it with you.â
I
âAve, this horse is beautiful. Thank you, but itâs too precious. I canât accept it.â Evadne tactfully declined.
âEvadne, did I upset you somehow? Are you still upset about that day?â
âNo, Iâm over it. My relationship with Thaddeus, even without blocking him, is basically the same as if I had.â Evadne laughed it off lightly.
Avery tightened his grip on the reins. âI picked this horse especially for you. It was shipped over from abroad and I had it stabled at the Chambers Groupâs stables, behind the Chambers familyâs back. But you saw what happened. My brother now manages the stable. Thereâs no way I can keep it there anymore. But I donât have enough space at home either. So, could you help me take care of it? Just as a favor.â
Faced with such a request, Evadne found it hard to refuse,
âIâll take care of it for now. As soon as you find a place for it, let me know and Iâll bring it over.â
Evadneâs eyes sparkled as she gazed at the horse. It was clear she was thrilled.
âBut remember, Iâm only looking after it for you,â she added, mindful of the principle of not accepting gifts without reason.
âSure. As soon as I find a place, Iâll take it back.â
Avery looked up at the night sky as snowflakes fell around them. âEvadne, itâs a bit chilly out here in Skyrim. Can I come in for a hot coffee?â
Embarrassed at her oversight, Evadne quickly invited him in.
Avery, with a hint of a smile, followed her into the Silverlake Harbor.
Just as the grand doors were about to close, Avery paused, glancing back with a cold smirk. âCoward,â he muttered.
Meanwhile, Thaddeus was standing by a window, lost in thought.
He chainâsmoked, filling the crystal ashtray with cigarette butts. The room was filled with smoke, shrouding his brooding yet lonely figure.
Thaddeus was choked with regrets. He had let his pride and anger cloud his judgement. It was only after Evadne had left that he realized the depth of his feelings for her.
Just then, his phone rang. It was from Gordon.
âMr. Thaddeus, I did as you asked and staked out Mrs. Abernathyâs place. Finally saw her,â Gordon said, his voice devoid of any relief.
âHow did she look?â Thaddeus asked, his voice steady.
When Gordon sent over some pictures, Thaddeus was taken aback. From the angle of the photo, it looked like Avery was whispering sweet nothings into Evadneâs ear.
Fury consumed Thaddeus as he looked at the intimate photo. His love for Evadne did not mean he had no pride, no selfârespect.
Thaddeus seethed with a rage that only intensified, his hazel eyes sparkling a deeper hue of crimson.
Bang!
He slammed a fist into the glass window, making a startlingly loud noise that nearly scared the soul out of Gordon on the other end of the phone!
âCalm down, Mr. Thaddeus, if you canât stand it, come in person. Avery is at Mrs Abernathyâs house right now. You canât just let it slide and let that man win. Thatâs tantamount to admitting defeat, isnât it?â
âGo see her? Why should I go see her?â
Thaddeus trembled with fury, his chest heaving violently. His eyes were moist, mirroring the wretchedness and despair of a drenched puppy in the rain.
âShe said she never wants to see me again, didnât she? Then Iâll grant her wish.
There should be a limit to torment, Evadne
