Chapter 1177
Substitute Marriage: Falling For My Ugly Wife
âReturn to the office immediately.â
After the call ended, Humphrey clenched his teeth. Ryan must have learned about the caseâs loss and
intended to discuss it with him.
As Humphrey entered Ryanâs office and faced his stern gaze, he felt a twinge of guilt.
âYou assured me that we would win the case.â
Humphreyâs head drooped as a sense of remorse gripped him.
âRyan, I apologize. There was an unexpected turn yesterday. Millie obtained evidence from Nancy
and⦠We trailed her to a riverbank. We believed sheâd plunged into the river, but it seems she
managed to escape. Last night, I genuinely believed sheâd jumped into the river, and to spare you
worry, I chose not to inform you. Looking back now, itâs evident she scaled the wall and fled.â
Ryan pinched the bridge of his nose, and his brow furrowed.
He had probably placed too much trust in Humphrey. Heâd sensed something was off with him last
night, but Humphrey hadnât mentioned any of this.
They had been grossly negligent.
Ryanâs irritation didnât abate. When he glimpsed Humphrey bowing his head, offering apologies tinged
with guilt, Ryanâs ire endured.
âLeave.â
Though the company had once been relatively small in scale, it had boasted a sterling reputation.
Presently, however, they were perceived as thieves who had plundered anotherâs work, inflicting
grievous harm upon the companyâs standing.
âI apologize.â

Ryanâs frustration didnât diminish, and Humphrey dared not linger.
Departing with a faint whisper of remorse, he quietly exited.
Ryanâs vexation remained unabated. He retrieved his phone and dialed a number, âLetâs meet for a
drink.â
It appeared that Millieâs expertise extended beyond design-it encompassed eluding capture as well.
Humphreyâs best efforts notwithstanding, she had still managed to escape.
No wonder she had captured Marcusâs heart.
In the evening, within Cloud Villa, Millie, post-dinner, reclined upon the living room sofa, engrossed in a
television program.
Marcusâs summons prompted her ascent.
âTime for bed.â
Millie rubbed her eyes, pivoting in the direction of the staircase.
Switching off the television, she commenced her ascent.
Upon entering their bedroom, Millie discovered Marcus had yet to freshen up. She yawned and
occupied the bed.
