Chapter 4
The Alpha and The Fool
I groaned as I saw Mom waiting for me outside the menâs locker rooms. âIâm fine,â I said before she could say anything.
âAre you sure? She didnât just break your nose, she crushed it.â
âYeah, I know. I was there remember,â I told her and waved my hand over my face. âBut I healed, and I donât even have a bruise.â I appreciated the worry, but it also irritated the crap out of me. She wouldnât be mother henning Ryder, my older brother, like this.
Mom pursed her lips as she looked at my face. âAre you sure about her? I mean perhaps you were merely fascinated by her.â
I snorted. âReally Mom? I get you all think Iâm out there, but Iâm not that far out there.â
She smiled and gave my shoulder a squeeze. âSorry, itâs only sheâs so...â
âI know,â I said, grinning remembering my mate in the black dress.
Mom sighed, snapping me out of my daydream. âOkay, new rule. No mentally undressing your mate in the presence of your mother.â
âThen letâs change the subject, because if not...â I said, waggling my eyebrows at her.
âGood lord, Dean,â Mom said with a sigh. âIâm afraid Iâm going to be mending your nose quite a bit in the near future. So are you done for today?â
I let out a breath. âYeah, finally. I probably should be going before I get sucked into the overnight shift. The boss is such a slave driver.â
âYour boss is a very lovely and dedicated person.â
I snorted again. âYou would say that.â Especially since she was my boss.
Mom laughed, shaking her head at me. âTell your father, I might not make dinner tonight. Iâm trying to work out the schedules for everyone. That ditzy, Shelley wants off yet again. This is what? Her fourth funeral for a grandmother?â
âRight, well later Mamacita.â I saluted her and left the hospital.
The drive home, my thoughts returned of my mate - Nicole, Brook had told me her name was. She seemed to be more skittish than Brook was when she first arrived. I could ask Ryder â nope, I so wasnât going to ask him anything. He and Andy would never let me live it down. They were already teasing me bad enough as it was. No, Iâd handle this on my own. She was gun shy or something, itâs possible she had a jerk of an ex or something. I only had to play it cool.
The house was noisier than usual, but it was expected with almost every room full. While I usually enjoyed being around people, I wasnât so sure I liked so many strangers here, made my instincts go a little crazy.
âHey Dean,â Kara said, waving me over.
âWhatâs up? Decide to dump Andy for a real man?â I teased.
âYeah, where I can find one?â
I grinned, normally Iâd say something crude, but it didnât seem right to say it now.
âUh, right,â she said. âWell F.Y.I. your mate, the girl who knocked you out, is in the gym...alone.â
I grinned and threw my arms around her in a bear hug. âYouâre the bestest friend ever.â
With a grunt, she tried to slap my arm. âLet me down, you dork.â
I set her down, but by the time she swung to slap my arm again, I was jogging down the hall. True enough, my mate was in the gym, lifting a dumbbell the size of my head. I swallowed. Okay, proceed with caution. I put on my best flirty grin, I walked into the gym. âHey Beautiful,â I said, sitting on a bench next to hers.
Her eyes lifted to meet mine, surprised and wide, before she lowered them again and continuing to lift and lower the dumbbell, not saying anything.
When she switched arms, I figured I was going to have to insist. âSo Beautiful-â
Her head ducked lower and her shoulders tensed. âDonât call me that.â
âSure thing, Sexy-â
Her head shot up. Her eyes blazed angrily, and her lips were pursed. âDo you want to die?â
I threw up my hands. âWhat I did I say?â
Her eyes narrowed. âGo make fun of someone else, Iâm busy.â
âMake fun of you? Iâm trying to introduce myself, Sexy.â
âIâm not stupid, got it,â she said, and I tried not to flinch as she dropped the weight to the floor. âStop calling me beautiful or sexy, or whatever. Iâm not any of those things.â
Right, well at least weâre talking. âWell, thatâs a matter of opinion, Beautiful. Now Iâm Dean, a Leo. I like long walks on the beach, cuddling, and you.
What may I call you besides, beautiful or sexy?â
She got a bewildered look on her face. âAre you serious?â
âYep.â
âDid your mother drop you on your head? Or you get in an accident that scrambled you up here?â she asked, tapping her finger on her temple. âOr are you just special?â
I grinned leaning back. âI think Iâm pretty special, but youâll have to take me for a test drive to find out if itâs true or not.â
She shook her head. âCan you stop.â
âNope, so Beautiful?â
âStop-â
âSexy then.â
She growled at me.
âCutie?â
âShut up.â
âGorgeous?â
âFine. Nic, call me Nic,â she said, her voice a husky, exasperated growl and I loved it.
With a triumphant grin, I sat upright. âSee was that so hard?â
âGood lord, yes,â she said, rolling her eyes. âNow what do you want, I mean like really?â
I shrugged. âWhat else, to talk and get to know each other. Weâre mates after all.â
Her eyes had widened for a second before she put on an expression of disinterest. âRight. Well, listen here Iâm not pretty, and Iâm not soft. Iâm not like the girls around here.â
I snapped my fingers. âThatâs what it was. I had a feeling there was something different, but I couldnât put a name to it.â
Again she narrowed her eyes at me, but before either of us said anything, someone cleared their throat. âExcuse me,â a big bulky man said, looking as if he wasnât trying to smile. âNic, your father is looking for you.â
Nic shot up, looking worried. âHow long?â
âNot long, but you better hurry.â
âRight,â she said and started toward the door and halted. âCould you...â
âNot tell your father you were talking with him? Of course,â the man said, giving her a small smile. âGo.â
I watched her leave, feeling disappointed I didnât get to talk to her longer. I stood to leave when the bulky man stopped me. âCareful, funny man.â
I stopped and stared at him. âExcuse me?â
âCareful,â he repeated. âYou hurt her, and youâll regret it.â
Oh, great. I wanted to roll my eyes like Nic had done earlier. âNot planning too.â
âGood,â he said, still not letting me pass. âAvoiding the alpha might be in your best interest. He doesnât like you, and when he discovers your her mate, heâs going to like you even less.â
âReally? And he seemed like such a great guy as he was yelling at her for something that wasnât her fault, yesterday.â
The man smirked down at me. âThat? What you heard was nothing. Heâs yelled at her a lot worse than that. Do her a favor and donât give him a reason to do it again.â He turned around and walked out of the gym.
My chest tightened with the urge to run him down and vow her father would never yell at her again, but who was I kidding. He wouldnât take me seriously. I put the weight back where it was and started to leave when werewolf I didnât recognize came in.
âAh, good. Just the man I was looking for,â he said, grinning at me.
I gave him the stink eye. âYouâre cute, but totally not my type. I prefer breasts.â
He laughed and winked at me. âDonât knock it until you try it,â he teased back and shook his head. âIâm not here for me. I have a friend who so happens to desperately need a man and I think you might be perfect for the job.â

âUh yeah, not interested, thank you.â Weird much? Dad shouldâve done some kind of screening because these werewolves canât be right in the head.
âAre you sure?â the man said, the grin still on his face. âSheâs about this tall.â He held up his hand. âShaved head, mean punch.â I crossed my arms over my chest and shot him a glare. Was he talking about Nic? âYouâre listening?â I nodded. âGood. Now you see, I could go look for a guy to fit our plans, but I donât see the point when you are perfect and best part, you donât even have to fake it.â
âWhat plan? What are you talking about?â
The man grinned, looking obviously pleased with himself. âTake a seat, and Iâll fill you in.â
