Chapter 21
The Alpha and The Fool
When Dean joined me on the front porch, we walked back to his house. Something had been bothering me since I spoke to Harry. This plan for a better pack wasnât something Harry just thought up. Clearly, itâd been something heâd been working on for a while. So why was Dean only telling me now?
âWell, what do you think?â Dean asked after weâd been walking for a few minutes.
âItâs a great idea. Something like this shouldâve happened long ago,â I said and with some hesitation added, âHarry didnât seem to like me too much. Is that why you didnât tell me about this before?â
Dean scoffed and gave me a sidelong glance. âYouâre kidding right?â
âNo, not really.â
âHow could anyone not like you?â He said smirking at me.
I rolled my eyes and hit him lightly on the shoulder. âYeah, because I such a charming person. Seriously though, why didnât you tell me about this before.â
Dean shrugged. âI couldnât.â
I glanced at him. âWhat do you mean?â
He blew out a breath. âIf I had mentioned Harry and his project you wouldâve gotten mad at me. You wouldâve thought I was telling you to give up like everyone else had been doing and I wasnât ready to get on your bad side. Hell, Iâm not now either.â
Well, hell, he had a point there. âYeah, I guess youâre right.â
âOf course I am,â he teased and took my hand and giving it a squeeze. âAlso, I was also hoping weâd find a way for you to kick the doucheâs ass. I mean seriously what he did was one hell of a dick move.â
Again, the fluttery feeling swam through me, and my throat tightened. Dean was amazing, and I havenât yet figured out why he was putting up with me. I hadnât done anything to deserve him. I squeezed his hand back, and we walked the rest of the way in silence. My mind a whirl of thoughts and possibilities. I liked Harryâs idea, I really did, and I hoped heâd let me be a part of it.
âWell Iâll catch up with you tomorrow,â Dean said once we reached the house. âI got to do an all nighter at the hospital again. Iâll talk to Harry too, see what we can do about getting this ball rolling.â
âYou mean if he decides Iâm not some ambitious wanna-be top dog?â
He gave me a lopsided smile. âThatâs Harry being Harry. If he didnât like you, he would have said no right then and there.â
âThanks, Dean. I really mean it, thank you,â I told him, trying to convey how thankful I was for all the support he was giving me.
âNo problem,â he said, grinning. âBut ya know, if you really wanna thank me...â he wagged his eyebrows at me.
I laughed, shook my head, hitting his arm lightly again. âGood night Dean.â But, maybe it was time I stepped up and showed him how much everything he was doing meant to me.
I texted the others to meet me in the game room. I took a seat at the bar as usual, and they arrived shortly after me. âI met with this Harry, and he has an interesting project,â I said and explained to them about Harryâs idea for a better pack. âDean says I would be a good alpha working with Harry and keeping the pack safe from other alphas from those who would challenge the pack. What about you guys?â
âSounds a little like a pipe dream to me,â Sade said with a slight cringe. âI mean itâs nice an all, but the other alphas would ever stand for it.â
âThey wouldnât have a choice,â Jon said, jumping in and repeated the fact alphas were free to rule as they choose. âIâm all in and seems like a great idea.â
âWesley?â
âItâs going to be hard work and not going to make you very popular among the other alphas.â
âI donât care,â I told him, surprised at how true that was. I was done living by the standards of other people. âI believe werewolves need this change and I want to be a part of that change.â
Wesley nodded, rubbing his chin. âThen weâre behind you, Nic, and youâre right. It is time for a change.â
âGreat,â I said, clapping my hands. âWith that settled, weâre done. Iâll get with Harry and see what needs to be done to get the ball rolling and let you guys know. Sade, can I talk to you before you leave.â Both, Wesley and Sade, paused, giving me a worried look. âRelax, itâs nothing major. Just want to talk about some stuff.â
âRight, itâs something about Dean, Come on Big guy, let's get out of here before they start,â Jon said, reaching up and clasping Wesleyâs shoulders and herding the bigger man out of the room.
âYou want to talk about Dean?â Sade asked, looking surprised.
âIn part,â I admitted. âI also wanted to make sure youâre okay with all of this. You donât seem too thrilled.â
She let out a breath and sat next to me. âI wonât lie. Iâm worried. This better packs thing, itâs very noble, but I canât help but remember those whoâve come before. Lincoln, Kennedy, and King all wanted to make changes similar to yours, and it didnât end well. I mean, is it really worth it if itâs so dangerous?â
âYes,â I replied without hesitation. âYou have lost your friends and family by sticking by me when I havenât done any wrong but expect what was promised to me. Dad specifically said we came here to find a mate for me and become alpha. Worse, I canât do anything about it because Iâm a woman. I canât change the packs, but I could run one where we arenât limited by gender or even dominance. Iâm willing to take risks.â
âBut itâs not only you. Itâs Wesley, Jon, Dean, and God knows who all else,â Sade argued.
âI canât be responsible for otherâs choices. If they want to walk away, they can. You can walk away right now, Sade, if thatâs what you want. I wonât hold it against you.â
She sighed and slumped on her stool. âNo, but thank you. So whatâs up with Dean?â
My stomach churned, and I twisted my fingers together. âWell, I want to do something for Dean well I guess for us, to kind of show Iâm thankful for everything heâs done, and Iâm, uh, ready to accept him as you know...â
She giggled, rolling her eyes at me. âSo basically youâd like to take him on a date or something, right?â
âUhm, yeah I guess so.â
Sade laughed again then nodded. âOkay, well youâve come to the right place.â She patted my hand and grew thoughtful. âI suggest as itâs your first, we should keep it simple and avoid the fancy restaurants. I have no doubt, you two would make a spectacle of yourselves.â
âHey,â I said, not sure if I should feel offended or not.
âOh come on, admit it,â Sade said, tapping her chin with her forefinger and looking thoughtful again. âI think itâd be best if you went with the classic movie and a dinner, but keep it low key - a nice restaurant, but no dress code. How does that sound.â
I shrugged. âIt sounds doable...but is it good enough? I mean it seems like of lame and Dean has done so much.â
Again Sade rolled her eyes, but this time she surprised me by pulling me in for a hug. âNic, itâs you thatâs going to make it special and important. That you want to do this with him will be more than enough for Dean. Trust me on this.â
I wasnât so sure, but I shrugged again. âOkay, but now what restaurant. I donât know anything here.â
âLeave that to me. Iâll do some fishing and find out a really good place. You sit tight and trust me.â
