Chapter 17
The Alpha and The Fool
After my training and shower, I sat outside, despite the chill, letting my mind process everything that had happened when Dean found me. âHey,â I said, running my hand over my head, vowing to cut my hair. It had grown out during my shifts and at about three or four inches long, was too long for my tastes. âWhat did your dad want?â
âThe usual, what about you? Anything new?â
âNo luck with the laws so far, but Sade has an idea. What is the usual? Does he want you to convince me to be a good girl and stop making waves?â
Dean gave me a half smile. âThe usual is him complaining Iâm not like my brother. He isnât against you leading, Nic. He believes itâs going to be impossible.â
âSo does everyone else it seems.â
Dean shrugged. âUsually Iâd say it doesnât matter what people think.â
âBut?â I asked, glancing over at him. He shifted in his chair, looking uncomfortable. âGo ahead and say what you got to say, Dean.â
âItâs just...â he started. âWhat if theyâre right?â Dean quickly raised his hands. âNot that Iâm saying they are or you should stop trying. Itâs only...â he sighed and looked even more uncomfortable. âWe havenât known each other long, but things are a mess, and being what we are means Iâm part of it too. Only, Iâm not sure exactly how much or what is expected of me?â
âSo basically you want to know where we stand?â
Dean nodded with a grimace. âYeah. I donât want to push you, Nic. I get this isnât what you planned for or even wanted...â
âNot even close,â I admitted then offered him a grimace of my own. âBut apparently, thatâs life. If things were different...â I shook my head. âBut theyâre not so there is no point in even thinking about it.â I blew out a breath. âI canât accept you as my mate right now,â I told him and quickly added, âItâs not you or anything youâve done, the fact that Iâm even considering this says a lot about you.â
He laughed and gave me a lopsided grin. âItâs cool. I get it. We just met, and already it seems as if we should fall in together like weâd known each other for years. Like you said, weâre friends, and thatâs a good start...because we are friends, right?â
I returned his laugh. âYeah, youâve more than earned my friendship.â
âBut still for everyone else, what should I do? Should I act as your mate or only as support? Is me fighting the douche in the list of possibilities?â
I grinned. The douche. I was definitely going to start using that. âIâd rather you didnât fight the douche as of now. Both of you are unknowns to me. I donât know anything about how either of you can fight. Itâd be a risky bet, and if you lose, itâs over. Thatâs it.â
His expression pinched. âHey, I beat your dad.â
I grimaced, afraid Iâd offended him. âYeah, but heâs old and has a bad knee...â
âOkay, got it, you assume Iâll lose,â he replied, sounding a little bitter.
âSorry Dean, Iâm just trying to be honest here, okay? Besides, I got the feeling you donât really do fights.â
His pinched expression eased. âI donât, and honestly, Iâd rather not fight the douche,â he admitted only to add, âBut I could do it, fight him. It wasnât just your dadâs age and bad knee the only reason I beat him, capisce?â
Again, I found myself grinning. âYeah, I got it. How about I tell you Sadeâs plan, and we figure out how to go from there.â When he nodded, I explained her idea of using his fatherâs manipulation to our benefit. âIt sounds like a good plan, but it brings right back to the same problem - putting you in a position you never wanted to be in - alpha, but also one who has to fight for it.â
He scratched the back of his head, expression thoughtful, and didnât say anything for a long while. It only confirmed my suspicions - he didnât want this. Dean didnât want the weight of alpha on his shoulders. Even in name only, he was weighed down with responsibility, and I didnât blame him for not wanting it. The only ones I blamed were Father, Douche, and all the alphaâs that let these old rules stay in place.
âThere has to be a way around this,â Dean said after a while. âI canât believe Iâm going to say this, but my cousin, Mike, is right.â
I looked at him curiously as I pulled my legs to sit crossed legged in the chair. âWhat do you mean? Right about what?â
âI asked him why he wasnât with the other alphas and he said why should he when Alice, his mate, was better at that stuff than him. Heâs right, why should he? Why should I fight when youâre the better fighter?â
âBecauseââ
âThey accepted her,â he said, cutting me off. âShe was in the alpha meetings all week long, and Mike wasnât. They accepted her and her alone to speak for her pack.â
He had a point. I frowned. âBut Alice wasnât fighting or facing a challenge.â
âThey say the challenges are alpha to alpha, and I have to issue a challenge or accept it, but do the rules say I have to fight out the challenge?â
âWell...I have no clue, but Dean, we still have the same problem. You donât want to be alpha.â
âI donât want to be my uncle who held his pack under the heel of his boot, and I donât want to be like Dad, making rules or doing things without peopleâs consent because I know whatâs good for them. Again, I canât believe Iâm going to say this, but I prefer to be more like my cousin. Alice and Mike apparently share alpha duties,â Dean said, again looking thoughtful.
âAnd how exactly would that work? You donât like anything about being alpha,â I said, surprised he was even suggesting this.
âI didnât until you used my patients to explain how you feel about your pack,â Dean replied. âIâm not a leader, but I can be a caretaker. Just like my patients, I can care for the pack. While you can be the ass kicker.â
I stared at him in surprise. âAnd youâd really be okay with all of that?â
âYeah, because it wouldnât be me deciding the fate of the entire pack. One wrong decision wouldnât lead to death and mayhem if I have you there to check me, or at least thatâs the plan,â he said, giving me a cheeky grin. âAnd I wouldnât have to be super serious and bored to death listening to old men rattle on and on.â
âWait a minute,â I said, narrowing my eyes at him. âWhy do I have to be the one listen to old men rattle on?â
âBecause you want to be the leader, obviously,â Dean said and then with another cheeky grin added, âAnd Iâm alpha I say so.â
âOh, really?â
âYep.â
âAnd what am I? Chopped liver?â I demanded, strangely fighting a smile.
âYouâre the little lady, obviously.â
âLittle...Dean, you call me that ever again and I promise you levels of pain youâve never experienced before. I am the alpha.â
âAgain, rough stuff has never been my thing, but Iâll keep an open mind,â he said winking at me.
âThatâs totally not where I was going with that,â I argued.
âYeah, but I prefer my way. Itâs so much better. Wanna come here and see.â Dean wagged his eyebrows at me.
I shook my head. âYeah, how about no. Weâve got a lot of work to do. Letâs see if this idea of yours, you accepting the challenge and me fighting the challenge is even possible.â
âWeâll find a way for it to be possible,â Dean said, standing with me.
Right, like it was that easy. âI also need to see if the others found out anything about Brandon.â

âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean is this is an annual meeting of alphas. How did Brandon get here? Who did he come with? I mean itâs just all too convenient heâs here now,â I replied as we walked into the house.
âThe who he came with is easy. We have lists of every alpha and who they brought with them. Iâll talk to our records keeper and find out. If heâs not on the lists that mean he didnât come here officially,â Dean said.
Why didnât I think of that? âAnd if he didnât come here officially it means he was already planning to do something,â I said, my thoughts running a mile a minute. âThanks, Dean.â I took a few hurried steps when Dean stopped me with a hand on my lower arm. âYeah?â
He gave me a sly grin. âWell seeing as Iâm super helpful and everything, I could possibly deserve some kind of reward.â
âReward,â I said, giving him an incredulous look.
âYeah, but hey, Iâm an easy, laid back guy so something like a kiss would be more than good enough.â
I let out a dry bark of laughter. âWow.â
âI know. Iâm amazing,â Dean said, running a hand through his hair and wagging his eyebrows at me.
âYouâre something alright,â I said then took his hand and kissed his knuckles. âThere a kiss.â
A look of pure disappointment overtook his face. âSeriously?â
âOf course,â I said and shrugged. âYou just said you wanted a kiss. Not my fault, you didnât specify. Now come on. Thereâs work to be done.â
