Promposal
Dealer's Girl
Madi POV:
How is it already May? I graduate next month.
Wow.
Lexa and I are the closest we've ever been. Maybe I should confess my feelings for her. It's not like I'm going off to college or anything but some of my friends are. If Lexa pushes me away then I'll be alone this summer.
And if she doesn't then we'll have an even better time together.
Prom was coming up. Everyone had a date...well, everyone but me.
Chase asked Liv. Matt asked Lizzie. Jack's going with a girl from our class. And I was left with finding my own date. Some people are bringing others from different schools so I knew exactly who I was gonna ask.
I knocked on her door and three seconds later it opened.
"Sunshine, come on in." Lexa motioned me inside.
Her house didn't smell like vanilla, it smelt like cookies.
"Are you making cookies?" I asked, shocked.
"Yep." She motioned to the counter.
"Why?" I laughed.
"I have no idea. I saw some on TV and thought 'wow, they look good.' Now I'm making my own." Lexa motioned to the plate.
I lifted one up, ready to bite into it but I stopped. "They're not drugged, right?"
Lexa tilted her head at me with a blank face.
I bit into the cookie. Damn, it was good.
She ate one too.
"I actually have a question for you." I put my bag down and sat on the couch.
"Shoot." She nodded, joining me.
"Prom is this weekend and everyone's bringing a date. I figured maybe we could go together?" I smiled at her.
She stared at me for a moment before giving me a sad look. Oh no.
"Madi." She said my name softly and I already got my answer. "Prom and me aren't two things that mix well."
"But you've never been." I pointed out.
"Yeah...and I don't want to." Lexa stood back up and walked to the kitchen.
My throat tightened. No, was I really gonna cry? I cleared my throat.
"Uh...are you sure? It would just be four hours." I tried again.
"I'm sorry, Madi. I just can't." Lexa shook her head.
"Right." I whispered. Then I acted like my phone was ringing and answered it. "Hello?"
Silence because no one was really there.
"Oh, okay. I'll come over now." I hung up the fake call.
"Everything okay?" Lexa faced me.
"Yeah. Lizzie's Mom is having us over for dinner. I'm gonna go." I stood.
"Madi-" Lexa began, following me to the door.
"I'll text you later. Bye, Lexa." I quickly left. If she could tell I was crying, she didn't say anything or follow me out.
I wasn't crying because she didn't want to go to prom.
I was crying because she didn't want to go to prom with me. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe she doesn't like me. I can't confess my feelings now. I'll be rejected just like I was moments ago.
Lizzie and Liv asked me to go prom shopping with them the second I got home. I wanted to say no but I needed to get my mind off Lexa.
Liv picked me up and the three of us drove to the mall. We were in a dress shop as they looked through the dresses.
"I'm shocked Jack didn't ask you. He's been fawning over you since you arrived." Lizzie spoke up, looking at a purple dress.
"Yeah, he's been off these past couple months." Liv agreed.
"He's just been with that new girl, uh...Flora?" I guessed her name.
"Yeah, maybe." Lizzie nodded.
"What about Lexa?" Liv looked at me.
"What about her?" I quickly replied.
"She went to Lizzie's Halloween party with you. You two are always together. Ask if she wants to go." Liv suggested.
"A drug dealer coming to prom? Wait, that actually sounds so fun. You should bring her." Lizzie nodded, picking a dress off the rack.
"I did ask her." I whispered. They both turned to me with smiles but the smiles were gone as they saw my face. "She said no."
"What!?" They screeched.
It caught the attention of some people.
"She said no?" Lizzie repeated.
"She just said prom's not her scene. I'll just go alone." I shrugged.
"You can't go alone to your senior prom." Liv's jaw was dropped.
"I don't want to go with anyone...just her." I looked at a yellow dress on the rack. It was beautiful. The top was tight and had flower vines. It flowed out into yellow mesh with no design. "How about this?"
"That is perfect for you." Lizzie smiled.
"Try it on." Liv nodded to the dressing room.
I took the dress and went to the room.
Lexa POV:
After Madi left I stared at the door for ten minutes. Should I go after her?
Well, it's too late now. I sighed and sat down.
I wasn't sure when I fell asleep but knocking on my door woke me up. I looked at my phone. It's already dark.
The knocking grew louder and I groaned, walking over and opening the door. Two girls stood there.
I knew them. It's Elizabeth and Olivia, Madi's friends.
"Alexa." Elizabeth said.
"Elizabeth." I said her name.
"Told you she remembered us." Olivia whispered to Elizabeth.
"We need to talk to you." Lizzie walked inside. Liv followed.
"Sure, come on in." I muttered, shutting the door. "Where's Madi?"
"What?" They both said.
"She said she had dinner at your house. Is she not with you?" I looked at Lizzie.
"Dinner at my house?" Lizzie whispered to herself.
"Right! Dinner, yeah we just dropped Madi off at home but wanted to stop by." Liv nodded.
"Why?" I asked.
"She told us you won't go to prom with her." Lizzie sat on my couch.
"I-" I was about to reply.
"She's heartbroken." Liv cut in. "She really wanted to go with you."
"I'm sure she can manage one party without me." I told them.
"She doesn't want to manage one party without you." Liv said.
Lizzie stood up and walked around my apartment.
"I'm a drug dealer. I can't waltz into a school prom." I shook my head.
"Why not?" Lizzie asked, standing beside the cookies. "Ooh, can I have a cookie?"
"Knock yourself out." I nodded.
Lizzie was about to bite into it but froze. "Are they drugged?"
My face dropped. "Why does everyone think they're drugged?"
"They're not? Damn." Lizzie sighed, eating the cookie.
"Look. This is Madi's first and last prom. She wants to spend it with someone she cares about." Liv continued. I faced her again. "She doesn't want to go with anyone besides you. It's so obvious she likes you."
"Yeah and it's pretty obvious you like her back." Lizzie munched on another cookie. I looked over at her. "No offense, but you don't hang out with anyone. Just her. And she doesn't even do drugs. And when you're with her, you don't either."
I sighed. "Look, I appreciate you guys coming here-"
"Lexa. You like her. It's been nine months. You know the first thing she asked when we told her we were having a Halloween party was?" Liv questioned. I stared at her. "She asked if it was okay to bring someone. You! She was talking about you!"
"And why do you think she hasn't gone to another party since? Because you weren't there." Lizzie walked back over to us.
"Jack and this one guy from a café she works at obviously have crushes on her. But do you know who she keeps turning to?" Liv raised her eyebrows.
"You." Lizzie answered.
"And you know who she won't stop talking about?" Liv continued.
"You." Lizzie pointed at me.
"And you know who she really likes and hopes she goes to prom with?" Liv finished.
Lizzie opened her mouth to answer but I held my hand up and stopped her.
I sighed. "Me."
"Yeah. You." Lizzie poked my shoulder. I raised my eyebrows at her and she retracted her hand. "Sorry."
I looked between them. Damn Madi for having such great friends.
"Fine." I agreed.
They were silent.
"Holy shit, we did it." Lizzie whispered, staring at Liv in shock. "We did it!"
They began to cheer as they jumped up and down. Then they were talking over each other about the prom, Madi's dress, and my outfit.
"Stop!" I stopped them and they were silent. "I agreed to prom. I did not agree to a dress."
