Chapter 13

Engaged

"Lainey!" Peyton yelled looking around outside. "Lainey, come on I just want to make sure you're ok."

Lainey could hear Peyton yelling, but didn't answer. She didn't want to talk, she just wanted to sit there alone in silence, so that she wouldn't have to listen to anyone nag about what she had done wrong.

"Lainey!... Lai-, oh there you are" Peyton said as she finally found Lainey sitting on a bench behind the restaurant.

Lainey looked up but didn't say anything. Peyton took a seat next to her, but didn't say anything. She knew that Lainey didn't want to talk about what just happened and she was ok with that.

They sat there for 5 minutes in complete silence before Lainey broke it. "If you're waiting for me to talk about it you might as well leave."

"I didn't come here to make you do anything you don't want to do. If you just want to sit here then that's what we'll do. I came here to check on you."

"I'm sure that went over real well." Lainey said rolling her eyes. "I'm sure I'll hear all about it tomorrow at work when no one can hear them yelling at me."

"Do you have any meetings tomorrow?"

"No, but what-"

"So work from home."

"And spend the whole day in the house by myself? No thank you, at least if I go to work I can laugh it off with Kelsey after I get yelled at."

"Who the fuck is Kelsey?!" Peyton snapped.

"Uhh..... my assistant..... Why?" Lainey asked hesitantly.

"And she's with you all day?"

"Yeeeaaaahhhh..... that's kind of what assistants do."

"Is she attractive?"

"I mean she's pretty I'll give her that, but I wouldn't say she's attractive. I'm engaged, and I don't cheat. Plus she's not my type so even if I was single I wouldn't go for her."

"So you have a pretty assistant and didn't think to let me know?"

"I just told you she wasn't my type. Also why do you care so much? Don't act like you haven't been trying to get in contact with Scott again."

"Wait how... wha-"

"Oh, yeah, I know about that by the way. I came home the other night and heard you leaving him a voicemail. I also heard you talking about him to Rue when I got home from work the day we went for ice cream, but PARDON me for having an assistant who's even remotely decent looking. Who, by the way, got the job based on her credentials not her appearance. I didn't even interview her my last assistant did before he left."

"I didn't know you knew about Scott."

"Would it really make a difference? You obviously still love the prick."

"I don't love him I just want closure."

"Newsflash, princess, did you ever think that it might have something to do with your parents. I mean think about it, your perfect relationship went to shit about the time they told you we were getting engaged, didn't it? They probably offered him money or some shit in return for breaking your heart, so that they didn't have to do it, and knowing how stupid Scott is, the dumbass probably took the payment and didn't think twice. I don't know if you realize this or not, but you deserve someone better than Scott, Peyton. Trust me, we ran in the same crowd, all he ever talked about was your body and how easy you were to walk all over. He never cared about anything but himself."

"Shut up Lainey! You don't know what you're talking about. We loved each other."

"You may have loved all of him, but the only thing he loved about you was your body and your status."

"Can we please not do this tonight."

"Fine, we can pin the conversation for now, but we WILL be coming back to it."

"Deal, we can revisit it at home when we're both calm."

"In the meantime you should go back inside. You're going to miss dinner."

"We can get something on the ride home, I'm not worried about it." Peyton said standing up and extending out her hand for Lainey to take. "Plus I'm kind of scared of the dark so I need you to walk with me."

"What do you mean you're afraid of the dark? You literally spent like 10 minutes out here looking for me by yelling out my name and attracting all kinds of attention to you."

"AND I WAS TERRIFIED! Now please walk me inside. We don't even have to stay if you don't want. We can grab our stuff and leave."

"Fiiiiinnnnneeeee" Lainey sighed taking Peyton's hand. "Oh and we're staying by the way, because you and I both know that if we leave they'll just schedule another dinner and I am NOT doing this more times than I have to."

"Fair enough, in that case we should make the most of it, yeah?"

"Oh no, what's running through that devilish little head of yours, beautiful?"

"Well I-" Peyton started, but cut herself off. "Did you just call me beautiful?"

"Yes, but don't get used to it. Can't let your head get too big." Lainey winked and kissed her on the cheek causing Peyton to blush as they walked into the restaurant.

"Hey! There they are, see I told you they wouldn't leave. That'll be $40." Aaron said to Alex.

"Boys, enough." their mom scolded

The rest of dinner was relatively calm after they got back.

"Lainey, can we go for ice cream again this week since it got ruined on Friday?" Megan asked glaring at Peyton, who was holding hands with Lainey.

"Sure, how about Tuesday, as long as you pass your spelling test tomorrow."

"Deal! And YOU'RE not invited this time!" Megan said pointing at Peyton.

"Now, now, Megan play nice." Lainey said.

"Why? She didn't play nice with us."

"And she has apologized to me for it and I forgave her."

"She never apologized to me so I still don't like her."

"I'm sorry little one." Peyton said kneeling down so that her and Megan were the same height.

"I don't accept. You have to buy me ice cream first."

"How do I do that when you told me I'm not aloud to come?"

"Oh, yeah" Megan laughed. "I forgot. I guess you can come as long as you promise to buy everyone's ice cream."

"Everyone? Who all is coming."

"You, me, Lainey, and I want bubba to come this time too."

"Ok fine, I guess I can buy for everyone."

"Yay! But don't think that this gets you totally out of the dog house. You're still on my watch list missy!"

"Watch list?" Peyton questioned.

"Yeah, it's what I put people on after I've moved them from my hit list." Megan smiled innocently.

"Hit list?!"

"Trust me I'm the last person you want to mess with, Peyton." Megan said evilly. "I know people."

"Yes, ma'am" Peyton said scared of Megan once again.

Once in the car to head back home Peyton turned to Lainey and said. "Just to let you know I don't think I'll ever, not be scared of your sister."

"Yeah, she has that effect on people. Why do you think I take her out for ice cream every time she asks? I'm too afraid to tell her no. I just have to make her think she's earning it so that she doesn't see that she's calling the shots." Lainey said laughing.

"Fair enough. Oh, and just to let you know she did ask your mother if her and your brother could go check on you after you stormed out, but your mom told her no."

"I figured so. They usually have my back when it comes to things like that, and when we'd get home and my parents would start yelling they would both do or say something to make our parents stop and give them attention instead."

"Sounds like you're just as lucky to have them as they are to have you."

"Yeah, they're pretty great. Were you like that with your siblings?"

"No, I was always kind of the outcast honestly. Being the only sibling without a twin kind of alienates you, plus I was always seen as the favorite because I never really questioned our parents."

"Yeah, I'd have probably hated you as a sibling then too." Lainey teased.

"Hey!" Peyton said nudging her.

"What?! You suck-ups make us others look worse than we really are."

"It's not my fault you others get yourselves into dumb situations."

"Yet, you and I still ended up in the same position princess."

"Princess? Really? I thought we were done with that nickname."

"In your dreams P."

"Oh please, like my dreams consist of you."

"You're in mine, so I have to be in yours. It's only fair."

"Oh, yeah? And what exactly are you dreaming up about me?"

"Some things are just meant to be kept a secret."

"Oh come on. You can't seriously leave me in suspense like that."

"Use your imagination Chapman. I'm sure you'll cook the right answer up in there eventually." Lainey teased.

After the girls got home they both headed straight to their rooms to change out of their dress clothes and into their comfy ones.

They both put on oversized tees and spandex. Once Peyton was changed she went to Lainey's room and knocked on her door.

"Come in princess."

Peyton rolled her eyes, but walked in anyways "Hey, want to watch a movie or something together before we go to bed?"

"Sure, but can we watch it in my room instead of the living room? I just got comfortable and I really don't want to move."

"I suppose, but next time we are watching it in my room." Peyton said walking over to Lainey's chair.

"Deal, also you can get on the bed with me. You don't have to sit all the way over there in the chair."

"Are you sure? I wouldn't want to accidentally fall asleep or something."

Now it was Lainey's turn to roll her eyes. "Trust me, P, you falling asleep in my bed wouldn't be the worst thing on the planet."

"So you want me to fall asleep in your bed?"

"That's not what I said, but if that's how you want to interpret it I won't try and change your mind."

"Shut up" Peyton laughed.

They decided to watch a few episodes of Grey's Anatomy, and Peyton did end up falling asleep in Lainey's bed. It made for the best sleep either girl had gotten since before they even moved. Peyton seemed to fit perfectly into Lainey's arms, and Lainey kind of liked having her there so it worked well for both girls.
