Chapter 229
A Farewell After Being Reborn
Ronaldâs words were cut short when he noticed Ian emerging from behind the security door. He was on
a phone call. âIvy has been through so much pain, Ian, you have to stand up for her!â
Ian looked at Sage, who met his gaze stoically. Sage had put two and two together based on the
middleâaged manâs words. Ivy had taken the medication Ian bought in the resort, and something had
gone wrong. Ivy had her stomach pumped in the hospital, and Ronald thought it was her doing.
So, Ian left because Ivy had been taken to the hospital. He called her here because of Ivy.
âDad, this could all be a misunderstanding. Please donât put Ian in a tight spot,â weakly.
Ivy said
âMy poor Ivy, youâre just too considerate for your own good!â Ronald said. âJust think about it. How
many times has this woman schemed against you and hurt you? I wouldnât have known about any of
these things if your Aunt Sandra hadnât told me about what had happened last time!â
Ivy gritted her teeth and said, âIt was just a scrape. It wasnât anything serious. Besides, Ian already
apologized on behalf of Mrs. Holcomb.â
âIs that so? Donât treat me like a fool! You were bleeding from your head, and your neck was bruised. If
Ian hadnât arrived in time, you mightâve been killed by her!â Ronald fumed. â Regardless, she owes us
an explanation this time!â He then shot daggers at Sage.
Just then, the elevator dinged. âUncle Ron, letâs head to Ivyâs ward first. We can talk things out there,â
Ian suggested.
âRight, letâs do that.â Ronald suppressed his anger and was about to push Ivyâs bed into the elevator.
However, Sage remained motionless in front of the elevator.
Ian glanced at her and said calmly, âLetâs go to the ward together.â
Sage sneered. âWhat does this have to do with me? Why did you call me over? Why should I go to the
ward with you?â
âHow dare-â Ronald was about to snap when Ivy tugged on his sleeve. âForget it, Dad. If Mrs. Holcomg
doesnât want to come with us, we shouldnât force her.â
Ian looked at Sage, who showed no signs of backing down. He politely yet firmly asked the two nurses,
âCould you please wait over there for a moment?â
Perhaps overwhelmed by the air of authority around Ian, the nurses exchanged glances and walked to
the front of the corridor. The elevator doors closed and it began descending. Ian looked into Sageâs
eyes and asked, âDid you touch Ivyâs medication in the car just now?â
Sage smiled wryly. âBefore you grill me, could you at least clue me in on whatâs going on? How am I
supposed to answer when I have no idea what happened?â
Ian ignored her sarcasm and responded calmly, âIâve had someone verify it. The medications from the
drugstore were fine, and the staff didnât make any stops when he delivered them.â
âWhy are you asking me when youâve already made up your mind?â Sage sneered.
Ianâs forehead creased. âDonât be unreasonable, Sage. Iâm just stating the facts. Ivy accidentally
ingested warfarin, which clashes with the antibiotic amoxicillin. She almost died! I called you over to
look into all the possibilities.â
Setting aside her frustration at being suspected, Sage realized that being stubborn wouldnât solve the
problem at hand. Mulling it over, she calmed down a little. âI didnât touch her medications. I donât even
know what warfarin is.â
Ian continued to stare into her eyes. âThe surveillance footage in the drugstore shows that you spent
quite a while in the antibiotic section.â
