Moving Day
The Alpha's Lone Wolf
ALLIE
The next day, James and I rise late. We spent all night making love, and although Iâm tired, I feel utterly exhilarated. Nothing can compare to the way I feel about him.
I could spend the next week in bed with him. I never want to leave.
We donât have that luxury, though. Not with the pack in danger, with Ryan threatening to destroy us all.
I have to drive into Linton. Clara and another of the pack warriors are going to escort me into Linton to pick up my old housemates.
James feels that itâs too dangerous now for me to travel with only one bodyguard. Heâd rather I didnât travel at all, but I refuse to give in to him on this one.
I need to bring them back to the pack as quickly as possible, before Ryan launches his next attack and before Danielle has a chance to change her mind.
Iâve already agreed to give up my job at Raffles, so I called Archie this morning to say a proper goodbye. He was understanding about the circumstances, but I hated letting him down.
We took a big van with enough room to store all my housematesâ belongings.
It seems sensible to move everything out of the house they shared, since we donât know how long they will have to stay with the pack. It could be months before theyâre able to return home.
Just as weâre about to drive away, David comes running out of the pack house shouting my name.
âDavid, whatâs wrong?â
âNothing! I just thought it would be a good idea if I joined you.â
âIâm not sure, David. We just want to get there quickly, pack up the guysâ stuff, and get back here before anyone notices that theyâre gone.â
âYouâll be quicker if you have an extra pair of hands to help with the packing. Besides, I can help protect you if Ryan attempts another ambush.â
I start to protest but he interrupts me.
âJames would like me to come with you. He doesnât want to stop you from going but he is worried about you.â
âOkay, you can come, but try your best not to annoy Danielle. She isnât keen on moving here, and I donât want you doing something that will make her change her mind.â
âI wonât. I promise. Iâll stand quietly in the background.â
I snort. âOf course you will.â Thatâs something Iâd love to seeâDavid managing to stay quiet for more than five minutes.
He jumps into the van with a big smile on his face, and we take off toward Linton.
The roads are quiet for a change, and I wonder if most of the wolves who were staying here have already left.
Alexander provided James with a list of loners, who he trusts and thinks will agree to move to the Red Moon Pack until Ryan is defeated.
Warriors had collected most of them this morning and were helping them settle into their new quarters.
When we arrive at the house, Adam and Toby are waiting for us outside with their bags, but thereâs no sign of Danielle.
âWhere is she?â
âUpstairs. She says she has changed her mind about coming,â Toby says apologetically.
âLike hell she has.â I march into the house and up the stairs shouting, âDanielle, get out here now! We are not leaving without you.â
âWell, youâll have to, because Iâm not coming with you,â she shouts back.
âYouâre coming even if I have to drag you by the hair,â I fire back. âIâm not leaving you here so that Ryan can get his hands on you.â
I open her bedroom door and find her lying on her bed with her arms folded and a stubborn look on her face.
Iâm relieved to see that most of her stuff is packed, which tells me she has only recently changed her mind about coming.
âLook,â I start over in a conciliatory tone. âI know you want to stay here. I know this place is home, but it just isnât safe at the moment.
âOnce James has defeated Ryan, you can come back, and life will return to normal.â
âAnd how long will that take?â she demands. âYour alpha has been trying to take Ryan down for years without success.
âI could spend years as an unwelcome and unwanted guest of his pack, hated for being a rogue and resented for being a drain on their resources.â
âYou wonât,â I insist. âJames isnât like that. You already know that the Red Moon Pack isnât like that. Heck, even the Silver Fang Pack isnât nearly as bad as I thought they would be.
âTheyâve been really welcoming to me, even though Iâm a loner.â
âThatâs because youâre Jamesâs mate and their luna. They will never treat you badly. But us, the dregs who have lost our packs, we wonât get that kind of treatment.â
âYes, you will, because if my being luna means anything, Iâm not going to allow them to treat loners that way anymore.â
âYou and whose army? Those wolves wonât let you continue to be a friend to a loner like me.â
âThey wonât be able to stop her,â someone says from the doorway. âBesides, she will have me to help her.â
I turn around and see David.
âI know you have good reason not to like or trust me, but I swear to you, Danielle, Iâll never let anyone mistreat you again. Come with us, and Iâll help Allie keep you safe.â
She stares at him and I see her begin to weaken.
âOkay, but donât think this changes anything between us. I still think youâre a spoiled, self-centered ass.â
He grins. âI wouldnât have it any other way.â
âLetâs go, then,â I plead. âThe sooner we get out of here, the sooner we can get you settled into your new accommodation.
âJames has made sure that all the loners from Linton are housed close to each other. Our friends will help you settle in.â
âNot ~all~ of our friends. Not everyone was invited, and there were a few who decided not to come. We got together last night to say goodbye.
âA few of them didnât want to lose their independence, and⦠Well, a lot of people were angry that Jason had been excluded.â
âWhat? Jason was excluded? Why?â I look at David to see if he knows, but he shrugs.
âMost people assumed that James had rejected him because he was so opposed to your mating,â Danielle says.
âHe wouldnât do that,â I protest. âHe doesnât feel angry or vindictive toward Jason.â
Iâm sure that was true. I hadnât thought Jason was on his radar at all. I looked to David for support.
âHe doesnât,â David agrees. âBesides, he wasnât the one who decided which loners were granted sanctuary. He left that up to Alexander.
âJames felt that Alexander knew the loners of Linton best, and since heâs been carrying out the investigations into whoâs been spying for Ryan, he would know who could be trusted.â
âBut Alexander knows Jason, heâs a friend. Why would he not include him? Unlessâ¦â The cogs in my brain slowly begin to turn. âAlexander thinks Jason is a traitor!â
âNo, he canât be, not Jason.â Danielle shakes her head.
We hear a loud banging downstairs and the front door slams shut.
Clara shouts up the stairs, âGet down here, now! We have a problem. Ryan has just turned up with a bunch of his warriors.â
âWell, if Jason didnât betray you and tell Ryan what your plans were, someone else you spoke to last night did. Otherwise, Ryan wouldnât be here now,â David points out.
And at that moment I realize heâs right.
One of our friends has betrayed us to Ryan.
