Chapter 33

Cold Showers

SEBASTIAN

Sebastian was crushed! He sat still for the first sixty seconds, wondering how his world had fallen apart. Two hours ago, he felt fulfilled and happy that everything was going well with him, and two hours later, his life had turned upside down.

He came back to reality and left his parents’ mansion. He ignored his mother’s plea to let her or his father come with him. He was clearly in a state where they were afraid of him driving, and besides that, they wanted to give him their support.

Sebastian refused to allow his parents or his sisters to go with him to the hospital. He promised to call them to keep them updated.

SEBASTIAN

Sebastian drove like a race car driver to the hospital and ran to the reception desk. He was directed to the ward where Jayda had been taken.

He didn’t care if heads turned as he ran through the corridors. He had to get to her as fast as he could. Entering the room, he saw Jayda seated on the bed in a hospital gown.

He was at her side in seconds, and he took her in his arms—but gently. Carefully, he released her from the hug and took a thorough look at her. He saw no apparent injuries except a small cut on the right side of her forehead. A white bandage covered it. He noticed she looked a little pale too.

Sebastian rested his forehead against hers. “You scared me, Jayda! I thought I had lost you.” He didn’t realize he was crying until Jayda cupped his cheeks with her hands.

“I’m sorry for that,” she said in remorse.

Sebastian’s hand went to her belly. “Our baby is fine too, right?”

Jayda nodded against his head, and Sebastian let out a grateful breath. “Thank God,” he muttered.

He kissed her lips, then settled beside her with her hands in his. Only then did he acknowledge the doctor and nurse in the room.

“Tell me what happened,” he requested.

“Jayda almost got hit by a truck driver. Thankfully, she and the baby are fine. Only her car got damaged,” the middle-aged doctor began in a calm voice.

“Her blood pressure went up due to shock from the accident. We will be keeping her with us for the night to monitor her health. Then tomorrow, we will decide when to discharge her.

“I will also suggest two to three days of bed rest for her when she leaves here. You must make sure she’s pampered and happy. Keep away any news that will upset her,” the doctor cautioned.

“Thanks, doc,” Sebastian agreed.

The doctor gestured toward the nurse standing beside him as he spoke to Jayda. “The nurse will be back in thirty minutes with your medicines and to check your blood pressure again.”

JAYDA

Jayda nodded. “I hope the medications won’t harm my baby?”

She wasn’t comfortable with the idea of taking medications that were not vitamins.

“It won’t,” the doctor assured her, and he and the nurse took their leave.

SEBASTIAN

Sebastian looked into Jayda’s dull and tired eyes. “You’ve heard what the doctor said. No work for the next couple of days. I’ll take care of you till you feel better.”

She nodded and reached for him so she could bury her face against his chest. Sebastian gathered her close, still gently. Even if she didn’t have many injuries, he knew she had to be sore from the crash. He kissed her lightly.

This reminded him of how easy it would be to lose them, and a chill swept over him. “I should get you a driver.”

Jayda frowned. “There’s no need for that. I’m a capable driver.”

He didn’t care about that. He wanted her to be safe, not out there on the road where anyone could hit her car.

“A driver would keep you safe,” Sebastian argued.

Jayda argued back. “I like driving myself!”

He wanted to keep insisting, but the doctor had said he shouldn’t stress her out.

Before a big fight could happen, Lilian arrived with some food for Jayda.

“So do you mind telling us how everything happened?” Lillian asked after Jayda finished her dinner.

Sebastian was still seated beside her on the bed while Lilian got comfortable on a chair beside the bed.

“It all happened so fast,” Jayda whispered.

“I was on my way home from work. As far as I remember, I was driving within the speed limit and in my lane. Suddenly this truck came from nowhere. I had no place to go. I was terrified! I thought I was going to die or lose my baby.

“The next thing I remember was someone encouraging me to open my eyes and when I did, I saw myself here. I panicked and begged them to tell me my baby was okay. The doctor calmed me down with a few breathing exercises and told me my little munchkin was fine.” Jayda’s voice shook.

“They called you because you were the last person I called on my contact list,” she said to Lilian, who nodded.

“By tomorrow, the doctor will let us know when she’ll be discharged. Once she can go home, she’s supposed to have three days of bed rest,” Sebastian added.

“I don’t mind the bed rest. My health and my baby’s welfare come first. Work can come later,” Jayda concluded.

“Have you told your mom you’re in the hospital?” Lilian already knew Jayda hadn’t done so.

“No. She’ll start fussing over me. I’ll tell her after my bed rest.”

They all talked some more until Lilian decided it was time to head home. Sebastian said he would be staying with Jayda for the night.

Lilian pulled her best friend in a hug. “Get well soon, babe!”

“Thanks, love.”

Lilian hugged Sebastian too, but he insisted he was going to walk her out. He had urgent calls to make. He was going to be out of work for days to take care of Jayda...and also so he could figure out how to handle the situation with Katie and Aaron.

“I’ll be right back, my love. Get some rest.” Sebastian kissed Jayda’s lips before he and Lilian made their way out of the ward.

“Thanks for all that you do for Jayda. I really appreciate it,” Sebastian said as they walked together.

“No need to thank me. She would have done the same for me,” Lilian assured as they continued walking. She gave him a hard stare.

“Seb? Is anything the matter? You look lost.”

Sebastian let out a heavy breath. “I’ve just been stressed lately, and what happened to Jayda tonight made me worried. I thought I was going to lose her and the baby. Jayda is my life, and I cannot imagine her not being in it or her being mad at me.”

Lilian smiled sadly. “I was scared too, but thank God they’re both fine. Do you want me to bring anything for you tomorrow?”

“Just a change of clothes for Jayda and maybe some food. I’ll contact Caleb to bring some clothes for me.”

“Sounds good. I’ll be here tomorrow morning with Roman,” Lilian said as they stopped by her car.

She gave him a goodbye hug.

“Are you sure you’re fine?” Lilian asked after pulling away from the hug. She could tell that something was not right with him.

“You worry too much, Lily, I’ll be fine.” His smile hardly reached his eyes. He was far from being fine; he had to put up a strong face outside but was a mess inside. He was sure Jayda was going to leave him when she learned the truth.
