Chapter 1017 - 1014: Visitors in the Middle of the Night

Eunuch Ren snorted coldly, “I clearly asked the magistrate of Yuzhou to sneak into the County City quietly, yet he made such a show of it, obviously intending to inform County Magistrate Sun of his arrival.”

“Didn’t expect him to be so cunning.”

“Eunuch, there’s no need to be angry. External officials naturally have their own set of survival rules.” Ye Muyu had long suspected that the Lin family had problems, but could not find any evidence. Now, seeing how obvious it was, it seemed the Lin family was not as united as she thought, and finding evidence might not be impossible.

Eunuch Ren also reminded Ye Muyu to recover well from her injuries. He would leave a guard to protect her, then he went downstairs to return to the county government with the magistrate of Yuzhou and County Magistrate Sun.

“Lady, you just rest. I will stand guard outside the door,” Chunqin withdrew.

Ye Muyu truly couldn’t hold on any longer and fell into a deep sleep.

In the latter half of the night, she heard voices in a daze.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she opened her eyes, only to see two figures at the window.

“Is the medicine ready?” The man’s voice was slightly coarse, of average stature. Ye Muyu could only make out the person’s silhouette against the moonlight.

The other, a thin and tall figure, nodded respectfully, “It has been placed in the tea. Once it’s drank, the person will pass without knowing.”

“Will it be detected?” the man asked, frowning.

“They will die within three days, and no evidence will be found.”

“Good.”

Following that, the man walked over and stood beside the bed.

Ye Muyu closed her eyes, controlled her heartbeat, and calmed herself down completely.

Even with her eyes shut, she could still sense someone nearby. She felt her wrist being lifted and her pulse being checked.

After a while,

the people in the room had all but vanished.

Ye Muyu waited in silence for a while before opening her eyes to find the room empty.

She suppressed the rage in her heart and waited a while longer before footsteps were heard outside the door and Chunqin’s voice came through, “Lady?”

Ye Muyu did not respond. She wasn’t sure who those people were and couldn’t wake up so soon after their visit. The only downside to an inn was the numerous prying eyes; undoubtedly, some had already been watching her room.

Sure enough, after Chunqin called out twice more, he left.

Her chest ached painfully, but Ye Muyu could only try to rest as much as possible. Since the assailant had already administered the potion, they wouldn’t try another method to deal with her. She would be safe for the night.

Ye Muyu didn’t know when she had fallen asleep, but she awoke just as dawn was breaking.

She casually touched the cup by the bed, and Chunqin, hearing the sound, came in.

“Lady, how did you rest last night?” A shadow lingered in Chunqin’s eyes, clearly indicating that he hadn’t rested well.

“What happened?” Ye Muyu asked.

Chunqin replied, “Last night, I was on guard outside the door, but somehow I fell asleep without realizing it. When I woke up, an hour had already passed. I asked the guard Eunuch Ren sent over, and he said he dozed off in the middle of the night too.”

Ye Muyu understood that the intruders must have used some kind of drug to knock out the guard so they could brazenly enter.

But she hadn’t seen the faces of those two individuals, only heard their voices.

Now was not the time to talk about this.

“Has there been any message from the lord?” Ye Muyu glanced at the teapot by the bed, her eyes darkened slightly.

“There is, he’s expected to return this afternoon.”

“Be cautious around the county government side,” she warned.

“Go get the water bottle from my luggage,” she directed.

Chunqin nodded, quickly went over to open the luggage, and took out a water bottle.
