Detonate: Chapter 47
Detonate: A Dark Mafia Romance (Beneath The Mask Series Book 2)
I whip my head up from the cushion as the door creaks open. âWakey wakey, lazy bones,â Frankie announces as he walks through with a brown shopping bag in each hand.
After one month of living in this tiny flat in the middle of god knows where, I can actually say I donât mind Frankieâs company. After my initial rage, heâs proven me wrong about him so far.
âHardly lazy. Just bored out of my head and pregnant and tired.â
âWell, I come with more smut.â He chuckles, dropping a bag full of books next to me before heading off to the kitchenette.
âI threw in a mother and baby book as well. In case your brain fancied a break from dicks.â
âHey! They have a plot too.â
I follow him into the kitchen. Heâs busy refilling the refrigerator full of goodies. I even spot a massive carton of strawberry ice cream that I demanded, blaming it on cravings.
âIâm making us carbonara tonight, my motherâs recipe.â
âDo you need a hand?â I ask.
âNo. It wonât take me long. Iâm a pro.â
He doesnât need to tell me twice. His cooking is delicious, after all.
By the time Iâve stacked my new books in the shelf in my bedroom, organizing them in the order I want to read them, Frankie calls out to me.
âSmells good.â I smile as I take a seat at the little two-seater table.
I canât help but notice Frankieâs frown every time I start chopping the spaghetti up with my knife. I guess thatâs not how itâs meant to be eaten.
âHowâs Grayson?â I ask.
âHeâs fine.â
He never gives much away. He told me about Graysonâs recovery from the shooting and how heâs been put on bedrest. Other than that, I get the same two-word responses. But I have to ask, I have to know heâs okay.
âHow long in days?â
âI donât know. Iâve been working on this for over a year now. I canât fuck it up now.â
âRight⦠What is this grand plan anyway?â
âEliminate all the enemies, take back whatâs rightfully mine.â He shrugs, biting into the garlic bread.
âWhat about Grayson and Luca? Where do they fit in this take over the world operation?â I ask nervously, hoping they arenât his means to an end. Although, heâs only shown respect when he speaks of them so far.
âThink of it as more of a joint enterprise. I and Luca could dominate the world.â
âIf they donât kill you first.â I smirk.
âI mean, if you could put in a good word with them for me, I might survive.â
I snigger.
âDepends how much longer Iâm here. Every day, thereâs less chance of me saying anything nice about you.â
âI see why Grayson likes you. Youâre full of spirit.â
âGee, thanks.â
âCome on, you need to eat. Itâs not just for you anymore, think of the little one,â he says.
Since the episode in the hospital, Frankieâs had private doctors around every week to check up on me and the baby. Iâve had no more bleeding and apparently everythingâs going as it should.
âIâve got a new TV coming tomorrow. Thought Iâd replace the one you smashed up.â He smirks.
Oops.
âYeah, sorry about that.â
âNo, youâre not. Does it get me back in the good books though?â
âFine. Just hurry up and finish whatever it is youâre doing and let me go back to my life.â
âIâm trying. You have my word. The second itâs safe for you to leave, Iâll let you.â
âAnyway, how come you have so much time to come and have dinner with me most nights? Donât you have a wife or someone to go home to?â
Iâve been dying to ask. I bet heâs not short of options, plus, he must be in his late thirties. I find it hard to believe he hasnât forced his way into someoneâs life yet.
âNope. Too busy for that.â
âDonât you want a family?â
âWatch it.â
âJust an observation,â I say, then stuff my mouth with pasta.
âIâm more than happy being Uncle Frankie.â
âYou might regret saying that. Uncles have to do lots of babysitting, you know,â I tease.
âNo problem, how hard can it be. I was brought up in a big family. I have lots of nieces.â
âI guess we will see.â I shrug, pushing away my plate. Every now and then, this overwhelming sadness consumes me. I miss Grayson so much.
No matter what, I will make sure Frankie makes this right.
For now, Iâm grateful weâre alive and healthy.
