CHAPTER 12: OLD FRIENDS
s0ulless
Four pairs of eyes met, but no one spoke. They had much to share, yet struggled to begin. âPardon my rudeness, keeping guests at the door,â Edward broke the silence. âIf you donât mind, please come in.â Muse pulled Snow to the creaky bed, Edward hobbling behind with his cane.
âLet me help,â Kira offered, supporting her old friend.
âYouâve softened since back then,â Edward said, grabbing a chair and easing into it. âYou two wouldnât believe itâmy main job was dragging myself after Kira just to remake her clothes. She was so reckless,â he laughed heartily.
âNo way,â Kiraâs face flushed, nudging his shoulder. âEd, whereâve you been hiding all this time? I thought youâdâ¦â
âNot yet,â Edward replied. âJust not my timeâ¦â
An awkward silence fell. Snow cut through it, âHowâd you two end up together? Howâd you escape all the way here, Muse?â
âHumans say âthe most dangerous place is the safest,â right? Compared to your journey, our storyâs not much. Snow, tell Edward from the start,â Muse said, brushing Snowâs hair.
Snow recounted meeting Kira on the battlefield, their clashes, and their alliance against 148 and to free Serah. Edward listened intently, Kira standing beside him, arms crossed in silence. Abruptly, Edward interrupted:
âKira, be honest. Is a Philosopherâs Stone inside you?â
ââ¦Yes,â Kira hesitated.
âListen, I wonât ask how you got it, but tell meâhowâd you defeat Branwen? A high-tier Beast like that shouldnât fall easily,â Edward pressed.
ââ¦I absorbed its Philosopherâs Stone.â
Silence reclaimed the room. Edward sighed, turning to Kira. âThereâs something you need to know. Lately, more people are vanishing, and trials happen constantly. I fearâ¦â He faltered.

âEd, we came to Elysium for Serah,â Kira said firmly. âIf you still see me as a friend, donât hide anything.â
Edward sighed again, asking Muse to fetch a notebook from the shelf. He handed it to Kira. She skimmed the pages, eyes widening in disbelief.
âIâve secretly gathered this intel over time. If Iâm right, the Elders are rushing to craft more Philosopherâs Stones for a final war with Midgard.â
âSo the missing people mightâveâ¦â Snowâs lips trembled.
âYes,â Edward continued. âThose with strong mana, like the Chosen, become raw material for the Stones. Weaker ones are forced to supply mana, mostly for summoning low-tier Beasts.â He paused, then added, âWe Homunculi are outdated against Midgardâs tech. The Elders realized only Beasts can secure Olympusâs victoryâ¦â
ââ¦And the Stones embody that key,â Kira finished. Edward nodded faintly. She bowed her head, slamming a fist into the wall. She knew they were all war tools, yet couldnât fathom why she felt such rage.
âOne more thingâPoppyâs still alive,â Edward touched her shoulder.
âPoppyâs alive!? Where?â Kira spun around, her eyes softening.
âSheâs hiding in an abandoned factory nearby. Her timeâs running out,â Edward turned away, hiding sorrow in his gaze.
âI know that place. Snow, letâs go,â Kira hurried toward the door.
âWait,â Muse blocked her. âArenât you two on the run? Snow got exposed earlierâgoing out nowâs trouble. Snow, didnât you want to hear our story?â
âTrue, but leaving Kira aloneâ¦â Snow hesitated.
âDonât worry, Iâll be quick,â Kira reassured her. âYouâve got plenty to catch up on with Muse, right? Iâm just meeting another old friend.â She smiled warmly, stepping out into the sewer.
Footsteps raced above, shouts of pursuit echoing. Kira shrank into a mouse, darting along the walls toward the abandoned factory.
Once a bread factory, it lay deserted after the Federationâs food control decree. A gaping hole pierced the ceiling, forgotten machines tangled with roots and thorns sprouting from the cracked floor. Poppy lay on a bed, eyes closed, brown hair fanning out like a sleeping princess. Kira approached gently, touching her to wake her, but Poppy didnât stir. Sensing something wrong, Kira sat beside her, shaking her shoulders. A shrill voice hissed from the shadows:
âA long kiss, good night to you.â
The Gremlin reappeared, baring its grotesque teeth in glee. As Kira rose, Poppyâs eyes snapped openâpure white pupilsâgrabbing Kira and pinning her to the bed. Before she could react, roots coiled around her. Poppyâs body melded with the bed, sinking to make way for Kira. Two arms sprouted from the headboard, covering her eyes and mouth. She thrashed and screamed, but it was futile. The Reaper sank into a deep sleep.
