Ch.41 See no evil, Hear no evil
The Daughter of Time (Ace of Queens #6)
Chapter 41
After kicking Heyder out of the room, Maya climbed back into bed. She felt exhausted to her bones and the thought of moving around made her sick to her stomach. She prayed she would be able to get a few more hours of sleep before Tobias arrived, but with her family popping in and out of the room to check in on her, sleep was impossible.
"I can't believe you are married," Margo said as she laid across the foot of Maya's bed.
"Not by choice," Maya reminded her.
"If Ali tricked me into marrying him, I would cut off his hands."
"Heyder didn't trick me into marrying him," Maya married her eyes. "We were in a tough situation."
Margo shrugged as she slipped her glossy dark hair over her shoulder. The shiny necklaces she wore around her neck glimmered in the sunlight and her perfectly tan skin made Maya envious. The girl was always sunkissed and ready.
"Whatever it was, I still feel really bad for you," Margo said. "Heyder is terrible. I can't imagine being married to him."
"What has he ever done to you?" Maya asked. But before Margo could respond, she stopped the girl. "Nothing. He has done nothing to you. Stop being such a judgemental bitch. Not everyone is a lap dog like Ali."
Margo paused picking at her nails. She lifted her full voluminous lashes and smirked.
"So possessive of your husband."
"Shut up," Maya rolled her eyes. "I'm not thrilled about being married to Heyder, but that doesn't mean he's a bad person."
As she spoke the words, her conversation with the jinn from the night before came back into her mind. With every inch of her, she knew Heyder, somewhere in his dark twisted heart, wanted the love of a family. Other than his mother, he never got acceptance from his brothers. Maya felt her heart shrivel up everytime she thought about Adeline treating her the same way Mirza treated Heyder.
As if activating some kind of hidden bobby trap, Maya suddenly felt the urge to be around Heyder. She needed to see him with her own eyes and know he was okay. Her heart started to hurt and all she could think about was looking into his dark eyes and seeing him smile. Even if it was his stupid smirk that got under her skin. She needed to see him.
Throwing her covers back and surprising Margo, Maya hopped off the bed. She felt her legs wobble, but they were much better then they had been earlier. In her long pink pajama pants and loosely fitted flannel shirt, Maya stumbled out of her room.
"Where are you going?" Margo asked, following her out.
"I need a walk," Maya lied. "My back hurts."
"I'll come with you,"
"No," Maya said a little too quickly. Margo paused and raised a brow.
"You'll say something that'll piss me off," Maya said. "Go find Ella or Maksim and bother them."
"Call me when you fix your attitude," Margo pressed her lips into a thin line. "I don't need your negativity in my life."
"Margo," Maya sighed. "Just go. Piss off."
"Witch," Margo said under her breath as she grabbed her purse and stepped around Maya.
Without waiting for the mermaid to turn around the corner, Maya headed out in search of Heyder. She had no idea where to look for him but putting her bed on his room down the hall, she rushed over. Without knocking, Maya pushed the double doors open and stepped in.
Instantly, she was filled with his scent. It calmed her and thrilled her all at the same time. Her heart raced as her throat dried up and her heart did flips. She looked over to the bed and frowned when she realized it was empty. Was he not here? Where was he?
Maya was just about to turn around and leave when she heard the jinn's deep voice call out to her.
"Birdie?" He asked as he walked out of the bathroom, rubbing a towel over his damp hair.
Maya stilled. Her eyes dropped to the second towel around Heyder's waist and the dark ink poking out. His skin looked smooth to the touch and all of his tattoos were calling out to her. Without thinking, Maya ran up to him and threw her arms around his neck.
Caught off guard by her sudden display of affection, Heyder dropped the towel from his head and pulled Maya closer. He pressed her against his body until he couldn't tell who's heart it was that was beating like a jackhammer.
"Did you do this to me?" Maya asked, her voice muffled.
"Do what?" Heyder asked, confused. He let a lazy smile pull over his lips as Maya pulled back to look at his face.
"I was sitting and talking to Margo," Maya said. Her eyes dropped to Heyder's lips as she struggled to get her thoughts out. "But then I suddenly had this overwhelming urge to come see you. Did you do this to me?"
"What?" Heyder smirked. "Make you fall in love with me?"
Maya frowned. She lifted her eye and let her arms lossen around the jinn's neck.
"Forget this," Maya mumbled. She let her hands fall to her side just as Heyder pulled her closer. He swung her around and trapped her between the wall and his body. Maya felt the electricity in the air make all the little hairs on her arm stand up. She couldn't think straight with Heyder standing half naked in front of her.
"I didn't do anything," he said as he leaned in closer.
"I don't trust you," Maya's breathing labored.
"I can't lie to you, baby."
"I think it's the fever," Maya swallowed the lump in her throat. "People do crazy things when they have a really high fever."
"Maybe," Heyder said as he let his hand move over her waist and then down the sides of her hips. Maya's eyes fluttered closed for a few seconds before she looked up at him once more.
"It's the fever," she said once more. "That's why I'm acting like this."
"I doubt it's t-" Heyder had no time to finish his words as Maya shot forward and pressed her lips against his. Her hands started to roam all over his body. He laughed as she pushed herself off the wall and pulled his neck down.
"Heyder," Maya whined as he tried to hold her steady just for a few seconds. The way she pulled him to her made him senseless. He didn't care why she thought she was doing this. The feel of her lips on his and the way her little moans sparked up his body was unforgettable.
Lifting her off the floor, Heyder flashed them over to the bed. He laid Maya down just as she pulled the towel off from around his waist. Her shirt and pants didn't take too long afterward to join the lonely towel on the floor. They were a tangle of kisses as Maya sat up and climbed on top. Heyder pulled her head down and nibbled playfully on her bottom lip. He was hooked on the way Maya tasted.
Maya pulled his hand away from her hair and put it on her body. She let him roam freely, touching everywhere he wanted to. Her hands did the same as she let her nails run over his ink. Pulling away from his mouth, she kissed down his neck and across his chest. Heyder groaned as he pulled Maya's body down to his and flipped them over.
"When will you get a tattoo for me?" Maya asked as she looked up at him.
"What do you want me to get, baby?"
"I don't know yet," Maya said. She hooked her arms around his neck and pulled him closer with her legs. Feeling his hard body glide over her made her back arch off the mattress.
"Stop with the teasing," Maya said as she tightened her thighs around his hand playing with her. "Or I'm leaving."
"I like it when you're mad," Heyder smirked. "I like the way mad tastes on your lips."
"Heyder," Maya gasped as his finger started to move faster. Her head rolled back and her mouth fell slightly open. She thought he was about to come apart but Heyder pulled his hand back just before she finished. Maya was about to ask him what she thought he was doing when she felt him slide inside of her.
Immediately, her nails dug into his back. She rolled her head forward and bit into his shoulder gently as he began to move faster and faster. The decorative pillows were all thrown off the bed as Maya made more space for them on the large bed. She moved up and wiggled out from under Heyder, surprising him by pushing him back against the headboard and straddling him.
That stupid smirk that made Maya's stomach do flips appeared on the jinn's lips. Maya leaned down and pulled his bottom lip into her mouth as he once more slid into her. Her hands rested over his as he held her hips. Heyder leaned back against the bed frame as he watched Maya's face.
"You're so beautiful," he said, pushing her hair out of her face. "Look at me."
Maya opened her eyes and looked down into his brown ones. She felt herself heat up like an explosion from the way his eyes watched her naked body on his. He made her feel completely safe, yet the feeling of falling off a clif was still very much alive in her body.
Heyder's eyes never left Maya as she fished and fell against his body. Not wanting to waste a second, he pulled her up onto all fours before gently guiding her chest to the bed. Maya positioned herself in front of him and let her arms slid up over her head. Heyder's hands on her hips made her legs shake as he entered her again. Maya bit down on her bottom lip as he began to move. Slowly and teasingly as first. But as her moans grew, he's control slipped.
"Heyder!" Maya all but screamed his name into the feathery pillow. She lifted her head and looked over her shoulder. The way Heyder stared at her perfectly round ass made her come apart all over again. She gripped the sheets above her head and the undebatable sound of the fabric ripping got lost somewhere in her moans. Maya thought she was all done for but just then, Heyder leaned forward and began to leave kisses on her lower back.
Maya shut her eyes as tightly as she could to stop herself from alarming her whole family. She heard Heyder whisper how much he loved her just as he reached his high. Maya was breathless as a few seconds later Heyder laid down beside her and pulled her to his chest.
"Fuckin' hell," he said, trying to catch his breath. "You are incredible."
Maya laughed as she buried her face in the crook of his shoulder. Heyder pulled her on top of himself and their warm skins melted against one another.
"Do you want your dad to kill me?" Heyder teased. "I'm pretty sure he heard us from a mile away."
"You would be dead by now if he heard us," Maya said as she pressed her cheek against his chest.
"I do think my dads are numbered when I am around that man."
"That man is my father," Maya reminded him. "Have some respect."
"How mad do you think he will be if I start calling him father in law?"
The smile on Maya's lips wavered slightly, "Very."
Heyder frowned as she began to wiggle off of him. He tried to hold on, but Maya unhooked his arm from around her body and moved off the bed.
"Where are you going?" He asked, slightly confused.
"I need to shower," Maya said as she picked up her clothes from the floor.
"There is a bathroom just fifteen feet from you."
"I like my own shower," Maya said as she pulled her pajamas on and buttoned her shirt.
"I think I should join you then to make a fair and unbiased judgement."
"Tobias will be here in a few minutes," Maya pulled her hair out from under her shirt. "We can't keep him waiting."
Heyder didn't respond. He watched Maya dress and move around the room. She picked up the towels off the floor and placed them at the edge of the bed. With a tight lip smile and little to no eye contact, she turned on her heels and walked out of the room. Heyder stared after her for a while, completely baffled. He laid back down against the ripped sheets coated with her scent and looked up at the ceiling.
What did they just do?
The same question ran through Maya's mind as she hurried into her room and ran into the shower. Without bothering to take off her clothes, she let the water run down and calm her burning body. She could still feel his kisses all over her and every time she closed her eyes, it just made her want him all over again. Under the ice cold water of the shower, Maya blushed as she remembered the way Heyder's hands moved over her. The way his tongue tasted her and the way their body moved with each other.
When her clothes had grown too heavy from all the water they had collected, Maya stripped them off. She cleaned herself lost in a daydream where Heyder didn't listen to her and came looking for her in the shower, but with every passing second the haze of their madness cleared and Maya shook the idea out of her head. She forced herself to pay extra close attention to everything she did. Stepping out of the shower, she avoided the mirrors because they made her feel as if Heyder's eyes were still on her. And she had no intention of seeing the deep blush on her cheeks.
After several minutes, Maya finally cleared her mind long enough to dry up and dress herself. She pulled on some dark jeans alone with a thin white cashmere sweater. Pulling her hair back, she tied it with a silk scarf and threw on some plain tennis shoes. Not wanting to make Tobias wait, Maya threw the wet towels into the laundry basket and ran out of the room. As she pushed the doors open, her eyes fell on the ruby ring around her finger and she felt her heart leap up.
"Stop it," she muttered to herself.
Maya, Gemma's voice came through the link. Tobias is here. Meet us in the lab.
I'll just go grab Heyder, Maya responded.
No need, Gemma said quickly. He's already here.
With a deep breath, Maya fixed her sweater and headed towards the lab. She checked the watch on her wrist and smirked when she realized the man had arrived exactly at noon.
"Always so punctual," she said as she walked into the lab. "Never a second late."
"How can I be late when Maya Dorin has summoned me," Tobias said as he looked over his shoulder before smiling.
"Hey, handsome," Maya winked as she looked him up and down. As always, the man was dressed in all dark colors. His marble like skin was flawless over his sharp features and his endless dark eyes hooded.
Gemma often said Tobias changed after he met his wife Posy. But Maya could never picture him as anything else other than the strikingly handsome tall man with eyes only for his wife.
"Hello, my little dove," Tobias tilted his head to one side and smiled.
From the corner of her eyes, maya noticed the way Heyder raised a sharp brow at the man's words. She ignored him for as long as hse could but the way he stood leaned up against the table with his long legs stretched out in front of him and his arms folded over his chest made Maya's eyes run to him like a magnet.
"What's the emergency?" Tobias asked. "I left my wife sitting at home all alone for you."
"Oh please," Maya rolled her eyes. "If you really loved me, you would have come to see me sooner."
"Can't let the wife get too suspicious," Tobias smiled.
"I'm very good at keeping sec-"
"We're looking for Apollo and his damn cows," Heyder snapped. "You seen them?"
Tobias patiently turned to the jinn, "I don't think we've met yet."
"I'm Heyder, Maya's husband."
"No," Maya shook her head. "No, he's not."
"I'm a jinn, I can't lie," Heyder shrugged.
"He is a jinn," Tobias looked at Maya.
"It's......" Maya's eyes moved from Heyder to Tobias. "Complicated."
"That could be the title of my autobiography," Heyder rolled his eyes. "Now, those damn cows."
"Why are you searching for Apollo and his cattles?" Tobias looked at Heyder long and hard.
"We need milk," Heyder said. "Little Dove here couldn't keep her hands to herself and kissed me."
"You have a curse on you," Tobias observed the air around the jinn.
"Well, aren't you observant?" Heyder snickered.
"Heyder," Gemma took a small step forward and she shook her head with disapproval. "He's here to help."
"Could have fooled me," Heyder shrugged. "I thought he was here to elope with my wife."
"I am not your wife!" Maya was tempted to stomp her feet.
Want me to tell you mama what we were just doing a few minutes ago? Heyder's eyes bored into Maya as he asked her the question through their link.
You wouldn't dare, Maya narrowed her eyes.
"Gemma," Heyder looked at the woman standing beside Tobias. He hid his smile as he saw Maya jump slightly.
"Yes?" Gemma looked at her daughter and then at the jinn.
"Just a few minutes ago, Maya and I were -"
"Talking about Apollo," Maya jumped in, literally. She stepped in front of Heyder and diverted her mother's attention away. "We were talking about Apollo and his cattles."
"The damn cattles," Heyder laughed behind Maya.
"I still don't understand why you need milk from Apollo's cattles," Tobias said as he folded his arms over his chest.
"It's one of the three things we need to break the curse," Heyder said, stepping out from behind Maya.
"What are the other things?"
"Elf blood," Maya lied quickly before Heyder could speak. "And some pears or something from the sea."
Tobias raised a brow, "Pears? What kind of curse is this?"
"The curse of Noia," Heyder said.
Tobias's eyes widened slightly with recognition, "Are you sure pears will work?"
"It's worth a try," Maya said.
"And if it doesn't work?"
"Then I die in three months," Beside Maya, Heyder flinched. Tobias's dark eyes watched the two for a few seconds before he turned to look at Gemma.
"What is it with your family and curses?" He asked.
"Maybe the gods don't like us," Gemma gave a short humourless laugh.
"We're not heartless," Tobias shook his head with a small smile on his lips.
"Prove it," Heyder cut them off. "Tell us where Apollo is and how we can get milk from his cattles."
"He's really a go getter, isn't he?" Tobias looked at Maya. "Demanding things from me as if I owe him a favor."
"His intentions are pure," Gemma said. "His execution is a bit.....rough."
"A bit?" Tobias laughed.
"Come on," Heyder groaned. "I don't have time for this. Where's golden boy?"
"Heyder," Maya pushed him with her elbow. "Calm down."
"Patience is a virtue," Tobias said.
"I don't have the luxury," Heyder took a step forward. "The clock is ticking over my wife's head. Fuck your virue."
"I am not your -"
"Not now," Heyder said over his shoulder. He turned back to look at Tobias and grew serious. "Help me and I will grant you one favor. No questions asked."
Maya's eyes flickered to the jinn in front of her. When was the last time he had made such a deal.....was it with Ivan Radacovick?
Tobias gazed at Heyder for a long time. He let the minutes drag on as he watched the jinn's patience slowly dripp away to hell fire. When he was sure Heyder would blow his lid any second, he let go of the breath he was holding.
"Greece," he said.
"Greece?" Gemma asked.
"Apollo is in Greece," Tobias nodded his head. "The island of Delos, his birth place."
"How do we get to him?" Heyder asked. "Does he have any spells surrounding him or something."
"No," Tobias shook his head. "Go to his temple by the white sand beach. Light a fire and call to him."
"That's it?" Heyder asked skeptically. "We just light a fire and he shows up?"
"Maybe," Tobias shugged.
"What do you mean?"
"We gods don't answer to every call and prayer," Tobias sighed. "I can't guarantee Apollo will listen to you and come out."
"But you could ask him to, could't you?" Maya frowned. "He's your brother."
"Nephew," Tobias corrected her. He let go of a long breath and nodded his head slowly. "I can give him a heads up. Let him know you are stopping by."
"Or you can get the milk for us," Heyder said.
"Don't push your luck," Tobias said. He was about to turn away when his eyes fell on Maya's sweet face. For a few seconds, his old heart twisted. He could still see the look of innocence in her big blue eyes. In so many ways he looked just like her mother.
"You go and try first," he said slowly, nodding towards Heyder. "If it doesn't work out, then I'll see what I can do."
Gemma took a step forward and touched the man's arm.
"Thank you," she said. "This really means a lot to us."
"It's the least I can do."
"It really is," Heyder snorted, earning another elbow from Maya.
"Thank you, Tobias," Maya said. "As much as I love Posey, I don't want to become your guest just yet."
Tobias nodded, "I'll let Apollo know you're on your way."
"That's our cue to head out," Maya said, looking at Heyder.
"Okay," Heyder nodded. He turned his attention back to Tobias and gave him a nod. "Thank you."
Maya blinked in surprise. She had never heard Heyder voluntarily thank anyone before. He was arrogant to the bones. But the way he looked at Tobias made her heart swell. There really was no part of him that could lie. Not even his eyes. They swam with gratitude as he followed Maya out of the lab. He followed behind her silently for a few seconds before he reached out and took her hand with the ruby ring.
"Why did you lie to him?" Heyder asked.
"What do you mean?" Maya looked at their hands.
"You told Tobias we needed pears and Elf blood to break the curse.....why?"
"Because he's a god," Maya sighed. "If I told him we were gathering things to go hunting for the ophiotaurus, don't you think he would have struck us down?"
Heyder let his eyes linger on her for a while as she stood still gazing at their hands. He slowly took a step closer and raised his free hand to her cheek.
"So you lied.....because you knew I wouldn't be able to," he said.
"And your snarky comments wouldn't have helped with Tobias if you were trying to dodge answering his questions."
"You covered for me," Heyder smiled.
"I guess....." Maya lifted her eyes. She found herself fighting the urge to lean into his touch.
As they stood in the halls, Maya felt waves of spark rise up through her body as Heyder spun the ring around her finger. It was one of his oldest habits and to be able to spin a ring on Maya's finger was a feeling he never knew he needed to experience.
"I like this ring on you," he said, raising her hand to get a better look.
"I'm sorry," Maya said. "I forgot to give it back to you."
Heyder gave a laugh, shaking his head.
"I just told you I like the ring on you and you think I want it back?"
"I don't really nee-"
"Don't say it," Heyder frowned slightly. "Keep it. My mother would have wanted you to have it."
"I don't think your mother would have liked me," Maya frowned.
"What makes you say that?"
"I have fey magic, Heyder," Maya sighed.
"So?"
"She w-"
"She would have loved your courage, your strength, your stubbornness, your bravery, your beautiful eyes, and the way you make me feel as if I'm home."
Maya's breath caught in her throat. She lifted her eyes and found Heyder watching her. He slowly raised her hand and brought the ring to his lips. Maya felt sparks fly down her back as he kissed her hand, without taking his eyes away from her.
"So it's true,"
Maya suddenly jumped as Fiza's voice startled her.
"You did marry her," the girl frowned as she started at the ring on Maya's finger.
"Oh for fuck's sake," Heyder groaned under his breath. He let go of Maya's hand and took a step between her and Fiza.
"I want to go home," Fiza's eyes grew dark. "I have had enough of your betrayal."
Maya watched over Heyder's shoulder as she yanked off the diamond ring from around her finger and flung it at Heyder.
"You promised you would love me. Only me!" Fiza shook her head. He took a step forward but Heyder suddenly raised his hand and snapped his finger.
Fiza stumbled as her eyes grew a thin layer of white veil over her pupils. She gasped as she rubbed her eyes.
"I can't see!" she said.
"Heyder," Maya looked at the jinn. "What did you do?"
"Mirza has been spying on her through her," Heyder said as he watched Fiza as if the girl was a lab experiment.
"What?" Maya frowned. "But you used the truth spell on her. She said she didn't tell Mirza anything."
"She wasn't lying," Heyder said. "She doesn't need to tell Mirza anything. He's inside of her head."
Maya's heart began to stumble as she looked at Fiza. The girl followed the sound of Heyder's voice as tears started to roll down her eyes.
"Heyder, I can't see," she said. "I can't see."
"And now you can't hear, either," Heyder snapped his fingers once more.
A shrilling scream left Fiza's lips as she threw her hand over her ears. She cried hysterically as she called for help.
"Heyder! Help me!" she begged. "I can't hear!"
"Heyder..." Maya said quietly as she watched Fiza stubble around blindly. "Maybe there is another way."
"She's bound to him," Heyder said. "He may be able to slip into her mind any time."
"This is torture!" Maya shook her head in disagreement. "She's going to go crazy like this!"
"She'll get used to it," Heyder said.
Horror flashed over Maya's face. She took a step away from Heyder as Fiza yelled and screamed a few feet away.
"Maya," Heyder reached for her. "Don't go near her."
"Stop it!" Maya snapped. "You can't take away her sight and hearing. She will lose her mind."
"I can't risk Mirza listening or seeing everything we do," Heyder said.
Maya didn't wait around. She rushed towards Fiza as Heyder rushed after her. She pushed his hands away when he tried to pull her back to safety and grabbed Fiza.
The girl let out an ear shattering scream as she tried to move away. Out of habit, Maya started speaking to her.
"Fiza!" she said. "It's me. I'm not going to hurt you."
No change. Fiza struggled and screamed.
"She can't hear you," Heyder said.
"No, shit Sherlock!" Maya snapped. She grabbed Fiza's hand and placed it over her face.
For a few seconds, the girl fought her. But as Maya held her hand close to her face, Fiza slowly began to recognize her.
"Maya?" She cried. "Help me."
"It's okay, you're okay," Maya said as she slowly pulled Fiza into her arms. Fiza began to sob as she turned her head in every direction.
Maya glared at Heyder as she lowered Fiza's head to her shoulder and placed a hand over the girl's head. Calling to her magic she began to perform a sleeping spell. It took a few seconds, but within a minute or two, Fiza's crying stopped and her knees buckled.
"What did you do?" Heyder asked curiously.
"Sweet slumber," Maya said as she lowered herself and Fiza onto the floor. "I put her to sleep so she wouldn't have to stay awake through not having her sight or hearing."
Heyder didn't speak. He watched Maya hold Fiza's head on her lap as she stroked the girl's dark hair. Every now and then she would look up and shoot him a look of disapproval.
"What?" He asked when he muttered under her breath.
"I said you're cruel!" Maya spit out. "How can you do this to her?"
"She was a security risk," Heyder justified himself.
Not liking his answer, Maya looked away. She heard the jinn take the few steps closer to her and kneel beside her and the sleeping girl.
"Maya?" Heyder lowered his voice.
"What?"
With soft gentle hands, Heyder reached out and took hold of her chin. He turned her face to look into her eyes.
"I'm sorry," he said. "But this is the only way I can think of to keep Mirza away."
"I don't like your ways," Maya shook her head.
"I know," Heyder smiled. "Now do you plan on babysitting my ex all day or should we go take a trip to Greece?"
Thank you for being so patient! I really have not been myself with all the stress and stuff :/ but writing this made me feel better. Let me know what your favorite part was <3
