HER POV
Never have I ever felt so weak and nervous in my entire life than this moment when I'm being held captivated by his mere voice and words. This man alone has the capacity to make me let down my walls and bare my soul to him, to let him see me as I truly am. And for some unknown reasons, I'm willing to open up and share the depths of my life.
God knows what this man is doing to me.
"You were jealous," he whispered over my ears and I almost lost my consciousness.
But my eyes opened wide the next second.
"Sunaina didi," I heard a voice.
(Sister Sunaina)
And before I could even process the voice I felt him pulling me to his chest and dragging me with him to the adjacent wall, hiding from anyone. His touch always sends me a shiver. I snaked his neck from one hand and squeezed my other hand out of fear, only to realise I shouldn't have. I saw cherries in my palm and juice coming out of a few. I cried mentally.
"Finish eating them, I'll be back," he said and left.
I saw him walking away in nothing but his black pants, and slightly wet hair. God, he seemed like a solution and problem at the same time.
I sighed, rested my back over the wall and ate my cherries one after the other. I do not know what is awaiting me in the future, but I feel a fire building up in my heart and soul, especially when he's near.
Later I finished those sweet and sour cherries and walked out to wash my hands. I realised no one was there and wondered where he had gone. I quickly washed my hands clean and heard him.
"Let's have lunch now," he said and I turned to look back at him and found him in a white kurta.
I was surprised to see him in this attire since all he wore was suits, shirts, and pants. Even in the engagement ceremony, he wore a three-piece suit. But this kurta was looking good on him. His broad shoulders gave way to his handsomeness.
"Umm.. actually my t-shirt was still dirty so I asked a boy to help, ahm...a..and he gave me... this." He said brushing his hair and avoiding to look at me.
I turned back and smiled while cleaning my hands and stood up to dry them with my dupatta.
I turned around and walked past him.
"He did a good job," I said and walked in front of the hut.
I saw the food being kept on the charpai, walking up to it I sat at one end comfortably with my legs crossed and started to plate the food properly. But the problem was we only had one plating for each item.
(charpai -a light bed or cot used in India.)
I heard him walking close and he sat on the other end crossing his legs. I was now confused about what to do. I looked at him confused and he looked between me and the food a couple of times.
"What happened?" He asked.
"Ahhm.. actually we don't have many plates for the amount of food here. You wait I'll just bring them," I said and started to climb down but he interrupted.
"Don't worry, it's fine. I'm thankful they provided us with food at this hour. I'm very hungry, shall we begin." He said and I felt relieved and happy to be sharing.
I nodded and he looked at me.
"Ladies first," he said and I chuckled.
I took a bite and savoured the delicious taste. Hours of waiting left me no choice but to dive in like a creature driven by hunger. Whereas he was eating like a light lunch, with proper etiquette. Wasn't he hungry? We ate and talked about a few things about my family and this village. He was inquisitive about the water supply, power supply and market of our village. He proposed to take a tour regarding these issues in the coming days. And I agreed to help him as much as I could after Baba-sa allowed me to.
After finishing we both stood up and I washed my hands and dried them with my dupatta. I walked up to him and he looked confused looking around everywhere.
"You need something?" I asked.
He turned to look at me and showed his palms. They were wet. Hesitantly I offered him my dupatta since we did not have much option, thinking ife would mind using it.
But he smilingly took hold of it and cleaned his palms holding the ends. I tried my best not to look his way or else he would again tease me.
"Thank you," he said and I nodded walking away.
Later we strolled to three more farm fields that were majorly affected due to crop failure. He discussed the cultivation and fertilisation process with the farmers. Although I knew this part of the village had been facing water supply problems for over ten months.
Getting a tour of another two fields we finally decided to walk back home and rest. It was a tiring day and evening was close. Upon entering the main gates I walked thinking about the entire day that we spent together. It was fun and beautiful. Should I put it like that? Can I freely feel what he makes me feel, is it right?
I was walking ahead to the stairs, passing the fountain and he was walking beside me at some distance. Both of us fell quiet upon walking back home. I looked at him and he looked at me, at the exact same moment. But what came in between was the fountain, splashing water. I was looking at him with hopes of my questions and his eyes seemed to convey the assurance of my doubts. Walking ahead with slow steps we came around and stopped in front of each other.
We wanted to say something but couldn't speak a word. I don't know why we were feeling at the loss of words when all the time we tossed words back and forth, each one knocking hard enough to quiet the other.
I gathered some strength and chose to speak something.
"Ahm.. thank you!" I said
"Thank you," he said at the same time.
I smiled and he bit his lip to stop him from chuckling and so did I.
"Ladies first," he said and I smiled.
"Thank you for the cherries," I said and he nodded.
"And thank you for the tour," he said and I nodded.
I started to climb the stairs and open the door when I heard him, with a heavy heart.
"Sunaina," he called my name and I scrunched my eyes shut.
I turned to look at him slowly.
"Ji," I said, avoiding to look at him with blood rushing to my cheeks.
"Can you prepare a draft regarding the water supply of this village? We need that tomorrow for supervision." He said after clearing his throat.
"Okay," I said and turned to leave.
"You will be coming tomorrow right? I me..mean for assistance and help," he said before I could leave.
"Only if Baba-sa allows me," I said and walked in the doors hurriedly.
I walked into the kitchen handed over the fruits to bhabhi-sa that I got from our farm trees and walked up to my room to freshen up.
Upon entering my room I walked straight to my bed and lay over it. It felt relaxing and soothing. Something similar to what he made me feel. I smiled recalling the times he called my name and inhaled a deep breath over his thoughts.
Later I freshened up changed into a comfortable brown cotton suit and walked downstairs for evening tea.
I walked up towards the dining table next to the kitchen when I heard a few voices coming from the living room. I looked behind and found my brother and Baba-sa discussing something with Jija-sa and him intensely. I quickly averted my eyes walked straight to the dining table and sat beside Radhika.
"Didi dadi-sa wants to have tea in her room," I heard Gunita.
"Okay, I'll serve it." I quickly served tea and added a few snacks of her taste to the tray itself.
"Here, take it," I said and Gunita took them to her room.
"Were your reports worth it?" Asked Radhika while serving tea to her mother-in-law.
"Yeah, Rao's have used the same mechanism of destroying crops for almost everyone. We need a lot of improved mechanisms." I explained to her about the fields we've been to.
Suddenly Ishani came rushing to me with a notebook in her hands.
"Buaaa I drew a flower," she said, jumping onto me and I immediately carried her in my arms.
"Oh my baby is learning so well," I said, caressing her head.
"My gift buaaa," she pouted and I kissed her cheeks telling her I would bring one chocolate tomorrow.
We laughed and talked about Radhika's wedding planning when I heard Baba-sa standing next to me.
"Sunaina beta," he said and I stood up after handing Ishani to Radhika.
(Sunaina, my child)
"Ji baba-sa," I walked up to him, while my brother walked out of the doors while being on the phone.
(Yes baba-sa)
"Beta we have an important day coming up in our hands, and your assistance is required for a few days at the fields. Your research has really helped us till now, do you mind joining Tejas at village tours for a couple of days for supervision?" He said and I could not believe my ears.
Baba-sa said exactly what he had asked me earlier. Did he fill his ears? Or maybe not. Baba-sa anyway wanted me to help him in the morning.
"Ji.. ji baba-sa," I said and he proudly patted my head and walked out.
(Yes...Yes baba-sa)
I hesitantly looked to the living room and found Jija-sa working on papers while he was drinking tea and looking at me. My body stiffened immediately. He put his cup away a little and threw another wink in my direction. I gulped down at his weird habit and looked away immediately. Why does that increase my heartbeat every time?
He's enjoying it too much. I promise to make him learn a lesson. I tried to avoid him now till we were in the house.
Later we had dinner and I avoided him with all my will. Finishing off the meal everybody stood up and I immediately left for my room after helping clean.
Walking into my room I closed the doors and lay on my bed. The pillow seemed comfortable. Suddenly the thought of joining him tomorrow crossed my mind. Should I agree to that? I wondered.
I had no reason not to. He made me feel comfortable. His words always make me want to believe in him and myself too. I feel happy when I'm with him, I wish to laugh carefree along with a sense of safety. He makes me feel secure.
And not to forget his electric touch. It makes me want to submit to him but there's still a nerve of sanity and confidence left in me.
Sleep was hovering over me, when I realised I had to work on something. My eyes opened wide at the thought of preparing water supply reports. But I felt sleepy too. It was a long tiring day and I wanted to sleep now.
Suddenly I felt some shuffling sounds. I sat up and looked around but nothing caught my eye. All of a sudden I heard him say my name. Am I dreaming?
"What are you looking around? Look here," I heard him and this time his voice came from the window.
I looked back to the window and found him hanging. And my mouth opened wide.
"What are you doing here? I was going to give the reports tomorrow anyway," I said.
"If you don't let me in now, I might not make it up till tomorrow!" He said hanging on the window and forwarding his hands.
I held his palm and made him come up and sit over the window with his legs dangling outside.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
He looked at me and smiled.
"Missed you," he said and my facial expression turned nervous hearing that.
"Wh...what?" I couldn't comprehend that.
"Aap hume nazarandaaj kar rhi thi, hume laga shayad aap humse naraz hai, humse koi galti hui kya," he said.
(You were ignoring me, I thought you were mad at me, Did I do something wrong?)
I realised how affected he was and this was a good time to teach him a lesson.
"Haan, hain hum naaraz," I said and pushed him.
(Yes, I am mad)
