Chapter 13

7|Tejas Promising Sunaina

TEJNA

HER POV

I didn't know why, but catching him eyeing other girls stirred my uncontrollable anger. I failed to understand why but I did not like that at all. Also, he does not seem like a man of that sort. Despite all that, frustration and rage were growing within me.

"What are you looking at there?" I asked curiously with a hint of anger after pulling his chin to look at me.

He smiled a little and answered.

"What do you want me to look at?"

"Hume dekhiye aap hamare saath aaye hai," I replied with an obvious reason.

(Look at me, you have come here with me)

"Filhaal to aap ko hi dekh rahe," he said, calming my anger down.

(For now, I'm looking at you only)

He then gently held my shoulders and made me turn to where he was looking. At first, I felt confused and angry, but later I realized what he was looking at so intensely.

It made me feel angry and stunned, at the same time. I wasn't able to digest the fact that how could Angad do that.

A little far from those girls, behind a tractor, Angad was talking to an old man, who was struggling to speak while sitting on the ground practically begging him, I guess. Whereas Angad surrounded him with his four men, aiming a pistol against his head.

"Oohh Myyy!" My voice raised a little and suddenly I felt him pulling me by my hand and making us sit down, hiding behind the bushes. My back facing his chest.

"Ssshhhh," he hushed me.

"Why are we hiding?" I asked.

"He'll get cautious if he gets alerted. I need to know what he's up to." He said.

"But he will kill him," I said and quickly stood up.

But he again pulled my arm and made me sit back, making me face him this time.

"He won't. He can get his way only by threatening not killing. Also, I have my men watching him all the time," He said but I was still not convinced.

"But he's got a gun," I said and stood up immediately, whereas this time he strongly pulled me closer to him, but instead of sitting back, I slipped and fell over him and he lay back to the ground whereas I lay over his chest.

"Aahh..." I muttered lying over his chest.

He had his arms protectively over my upper and lower back as if keeping me safe. I could feel his long, thick fingers and big palm very distinctly over my back. Moreover lying over his chest I could also feel his abs beneath me. I found myself inches away from the smooth line of his neck and with palm over his chest, just above his heart. God how crazily that was beating. I wondered if he was alright.

I slowly clutched his t-shirt, my fingers curling into the material, with a deep breath I lifted my face to look at him. His hold tightened on me, while he angled his face to look at me and this was the second time I saw his face this close. But the first time allowing my eyes to captivate his features.

His complexion had a natural glow given by the sun. The curve of his jawline looked sharp yet soft. And his lips, they were effortlessly drawing attention without trying and I quickly averted my eyes from them. I looked into his eyes which were already peeking into mine, they had a hint of both power and silence. His face had a weight of untold stories.

A few strands fell on my face, hiding his face from my sight. In the next moment, I felt his fingers pushing away the strands behind my ear. I shyly looked into his eyes while he focused intently on tucking my hair back carefully, his fingers brushing against my ear during the process sending an electric warmth in me.

"yeh bindi itni buri bhi nahi jitna hum soch rahe the," he said.

(This bindi does not seem that bad either)

{a mark (such as a red dot) or piece of jewellery worn on the middle of the forehead, especially by Hindu women}

He noticed.

I smiled but soon recalled his words. Wait a minute did he just say he did not like it?

Immediately outrage started within me. I placed both my palms on his chest and pulled myself up to look at him clearly.

"You don't like it?" I asked, gritting my teeth.

I was genuinely curious.

He laughed a little placed his one arm under his head and chose to speak.

"You know I did not say that," he said, smiling at me.

I sighed, getting annoyed and stood up hurriedly and corrected my clothes. I looked around but no one was present. I think they left after threatening him, or else Angad got caught with his men. But what was he warning the old man about, that too with a gun?

Suddenly I felt him standing behind me and pulling my hair strands. I turned around and looked at him fiercely but he was keen on his task.

"Kya kar rahe hai aap?" I asked.

(What are you doing?)

"Aapke khoobsurat baalo par mitti lagi hui hai, woh hata rahe hai," he said and looked at me after cleaning my hair strands.

(Pushing dirt away from your beautiful hair.)

"Chalein?" I said and he nodded, giving me another smile.

(Shall we go?)

But I do not like his smile now, after all, he did not like my bindi. Did he not like that at all? How's that possible?

"You're not coming?" I heard him and realised he walked ahead of me and I was still standing still.

I nodded and started walking and he turned, his back facing me. And I couldn't control my laughter. I put my palm over my mouth looking at his backside. He heard me and turned to face me. His facial expressions turned confused. I kept walking till I reached near him.

"What?" He asked.

"You're dirty," I said and he raised his eyebrows.

"What?" He asked again.

"Yeah, your t-shirt, it's all dirty," I said trying to control my laughter.

He tried to look around and check his t-shirt. He looked funny right now.

"Hahaha," I laughed and he stopped to look at me.

"Hamari madad karne jagah aap hum par has rahi hai?" He said.

(You are laughing instead of helping me?)

"Aap bhi to haste rahte hai hum par bewajah," I said, crossing my arms.

(You also laugh at me without any reasons.)

He bit his lip and brushed his hair roughly.

"Okay now help me." He said.

"Fine, follow me now and be careful not to fall," I said walking ahead and giggling at the end.

"Yeah, you be careful of that!" He said and chuckled.

I sighed angrily thinking he always had an answer to my remarks.

Later on, we kept walking to my uncle's farm and he got busy with discussions with my uncle and the caretakers of the farm fields. In the meanwhile, I walked behind the hut and searched for some cherries to eat. I was hungry, I didn't even have breakfast and it was lunchtime now.

I found a plant full of small red cherries behind a small man-made pond attached to a turbine, I quickly walked to it and plucked a few to eat. After some time, I walked back and joined them.

"Beta I'll send you both lunch here, it's late noon anyways," my uncle said and I thanked him gladly and he went away.

(Beta- my child)

"But I need to wash up before eating," he said.

"Okay come here," I said and started walking behind the hut to the pond.

"You can wash up here," I said.

He looked at the pond then at the surrounding and then at me. He looked a little surprised.

"Are you serious?" He asked and I nodded.

"Of course everyone, I mean all men, even take a bath here and you just have to wash yourself," I tried to put sense into him.

"How do you know that? Do you look at those men?" He asked, knitting his eyebrows.

"What? Are you crazy? It's just common knowledge. Even baba-sa and Bhaisa do so," I said.

"But... it's all... open," he said looking around a little.

What is he so worried about? Who's watching him anyway?

"You don't have many options here, also lunch will arrive in no time, so better hurry," I said taking a seat on a wooden charpai against him.

(charpai -a light bed or cot used in India.)

"Really? you wanna enjoy the show?" He said, placing his hand on the handle of the turbine and crossing his legs looking at me, with a smirk playing over his lips.

"There is no show to watch, just hurry up," I said, eating a cherry casually.

"Alright, if you're getting impatient!" He casually walked a couple of steps towards me and took off his t-shirt in an instant. And looked at me with those teaseful eyes.

My mind went blank and immediately all the cherries dropped down from my palm. My eyes almost came out of my socket whereas my heart started beating loud as a drum.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" I shouted at him and immediately closed my eyes palming my face and turned around facing my back to him.

I could hear his laughter, followed by a splash of water.

"Why are you so surprised? You already saw all that before" He said and I can bet he was teasing me.

"But that does not mean I'm willing to see that again," I said, huffing out my anger.

Also, my cherries went to waste because of him.

"Sunaina!" He called out in his deep voice and my heart started hammering against my chest.

It's not the first time I'm hearing my name but hearing it from his mouth was making me nervous and ecstatic at the same time. It was as if he called for my soul, wholeheartedly, and my soul heard him at once. I was glad to not face him or else he would have seen blood rushing to my cheeks.

"Ha..nn," came my nervous reply.

(Ye..ss)

"About the one in specific, I would suggest you start by knowing me first," he said and my heartbeats were just increasing.

He heard me before. He was listening to what I was saying. Does that mean he has been thinking about my words all this time? Does that mean he has been wondering about me all this while? But why? Do I interest him? Does he interest me? I started wondering about every little thing between us.

"Wh...why you?" I asked.

"Your search will be easy and quick to finalise with," he said and again a blush crept to my cheeks. I bit my lower lip to stop smiling like an idiot.

But I quickly managed to change my demeanour before he caught me. He's very smart.

"Alright, are you done washing up?" I asked with a self-assured tone.

"I need your help." He said following another splash of water and my back straightened hearing him.

Oh god, what now? I can't face him anymore today. He's going to make me crazy.

"Walk back to the wall and close your eyes." He said.

"What do you want now?" I asked, getting annoyed.

"Just do as I say if you don't want to scream again," he said and I tightened my palms angrily and walked to the wall that was in the shed ahead of me and closed my eyes.

"Okay, what now?" I asked, scrunching my eyes shut.

But no response. Utter silence. I could not even hear a footstep. Did he just make a fool out of me to run away? He could have just said so. I wasn't going to eat him up. I sighed at his stupid behaviour.

"Turn around," suddenly came his deep velvety voice and I shifted in my place out of fear.

I turned around with my eyes closed and my heart hammering like it would just come out. Nervousness was clearly visible on my face. I could feel him standing only a foot away from me. I could sense him. His authoritative demeanour was too much for me to handle. I bet he was looking at every little detail of my face. The fear, the blush and racing heartbeats.

"Open your palm," he said in a low husky voice.

I nervously brought my palm up and put it forward to him. Do I trust him enough to turn blind for his sake?

In the next moment, I felt him holding my palm beneath mine. The simple act of a delicate and soft touch made my heart flutter. The touch was fleeting. And soon I felt him dropping something in my palm from his other hand.

"I promise, to not disappoint you, Sunaina, trust me." He said softly and I could not help but open my eyes now.

I saw him looking at me with deep loving emotions. His eyes have always been the ones to talk and this time as well they are convincing me of a clear message that he delivered to me just now. They want me to believe him.

He started to take a step towards me and I took one back and immediately felt the hut wall behind me. Until this moment I hadn't realised he was not wearing any shirt. I nervously looked at him when he placed both of his arms beside me. Looking into his eyes I couldn't figure his intentions, it felt as if he was diving into mine.

"Aap hume aise kyun dekh rahe hai?" I asked very softly.

(Why are you looking at me like that?)

My chest started to go up and down. He looked into both my eyes taking his time and said.

"Kyunki aap ko achha nahi lagta, hum aapke alawa kisi aur ko dekhe" he said and my knees started to turn weak.

(because you don't like it if I look at anyone other than you,)

"Humne aisa to nahi kaha," I said trying to avoid looking into his eyes.

(I did not say so)

"Par aap chahti to yahi hai," he said with a very light smirk over his lips along with smiling eyes.

(But you wish so)

"Aapko kaise pata?" I asked trying to sound confident although still under his hold.

(How do you know)

"Aapki aankhein bahut baatein karti hai," he said and bit his lower lip and came closer to my ear.

(Your eyes, they talk a lot)

"You were jealous," he whispered over my lips and I almost lost my consciousness.

But my eyes opened wide the next second.

"Sunaina didi," I heard a voice.

(Sister Sunaina)
