HER POV
"I need to talk to you, whatever happened last night," he said and I almost felt numb.
What is wrong with this man? Out of nowhere, he came into my room last night and now wants to discuss that in front of everyone like it was no big deal.
It is a goddamn big deal.
I held a glass tight in my hand, gritting my teeth and looked at him, while he was standing at the door staring at me with a blank face.
"What happened last night?" I heard badi ma-sa.
My heart started to race sensing where this was leading to. I looked at her confused while she looked in my direction.
What am I supposed to tell her, when I don't have a clear answer myself about what happened last night? How should I explain all that? My nervousness slowly started to appear in my body.
I heard Radhika whispering to me.
"Sunaina, what is he talking about?" Asked Radhika.
I looked at her and then I heard him talking.
"Actually the meeting is soon to be held in the coming days, so I wanted to learn about a few things regarding the crop failure and vegetation crisis. And I got to know, you handle the research department so I thought...." he said and I saw a smirk following his lips slowly.
My jaw locked, and my furious stare conveyed everything. In the blink of an eye, he threw a wink my way. And my breath hitched seeing that.
How could he do that in front of everyone? What has gotten into his head?
"Yes of course Sunaina has got a detailed report on that. She will help you," Radhika said.
"Thank you bhabhisa," he smiled looking at her.
"Sunaina beta jao, hum khane ka kaam sambhal lenge," badi ma-sa said sweety.
(Sunaina my child, you can leave, we will handle the cooking)
"Ji," I hesitantly nodded at her and started to walk away with slow steps.
(Yes)
I looked at him biting his lower lip to conceal his smile. I narrowed my eyes on him and he left from there.
I corrected my dupatta and walked out of the kitchen. He was standing in the verandah working on his phone. I walked up to him with big steps and stood in front of him crossing my arms against my chest.
He took notice of me sheepishly and looked at me, putting his phone away.
"Why did you lie to everyone?" I asked, huffing out my anger.
He smiled a little and answered with his hands in his pockets. Why is his demeanour always authoritative and commanding, with a readiness for action?
"I did not lie. I really wanted those reports." He said.
"Maybe, but that's not what happened last night," I said.
"You wanted me to tell them about what happened last night?" He said, smiling wider.
His words and actions always leave me mum.
"of... of course not. Anyways I'll give you the reports." I said and quickly sprinted away from him.
I collected those reports from my room and started to walk away. Passing through the mirror I realised something. I took a couple of steps back and looked at myself in the mirror. Quickly taking a light green bindi from the dressing table I applied it between my eyebrows. I smiled looking at myself, guess it looked on me
Afterwards, I left downstairs with quick steps and on reaching there I found Baba-sa talking to him. I slowed down on my steps and walked to them with my head bent a little low and papers clutched to my chest.
I started wondering what they were talking about. It looked as if he was informing Baba-sa about something. Are they talking about me? But why would they? Instead, what about me? Soon they noticed me and I stood straight smiling at them.
"The reports," I said, forwarding it to them.
He took them from me and I avoided looking at him although I knew he was staring at me. But the presence of Baba-sa was keeping me shut.
"Sunaina beta please visit Roohgarh with Tejas he needs your help," he said and my head jerked to look at him.
"What?" Came my surprised response.
Both of them looked at me.
"I.. I m...mean why?" I asked, laughing it off a little.
"Actually Tejas is new to our village. He needs to know about the locals, nearby areas and our farm fields till his stay. He needs it to help us with all the issues. Since you are good at research work, also others are busy with wedding preparations, so help him out." He explained and patted my shoulders.
I couldn't digest what he just said. Before I could even agree to that baba-sa left saying.
"Sunaina take care and call me if you need anything." He said.
I looked at his retreating figure and suddenly heard him clearing his throat.
"Chalein?" He asked.
(Shall we leave?)
"What do you even need me for? You know everything," I said.
He chuckled and started walking to the door.
"I don't know much about the farmers and their farm fields, and without knowing about how Angad's family manipulated them I won't be able to guarantee for future security." He said and I followed behind.
"Alright, but just so you know I'm only coming with you because I care about my village, okay?" I said, raising my eyebrows.
"As you say my Highness," he said softly.
"What?" I asked.
"Actually I don't want them to see me as a stranger, I hope they feel homely talking to me. And that is the reason I want you with me" He said looking at me and walking ahead.
"Yeah your appearance is just so homely," I chuckled.
"What?" He asked. "What is wrong with this?" He added looking at himself.
"There's nothing wrong, but it's too much!" I said.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
He was wearing a two-piece brown suit in the month of March in a village. And still wants to feel included. I examined him from top to bottom wondering why does he have to dress like that every single day.
"Do you always wear clothes like this?" I asked.
"Yes, why?" He asked.
"I mean you are not in your office right now, and we'll be just walking around the village so why not wear something light? Like you know.. something simple.." I tried to explain to him.
He seemed confused a little but nodded very lightly.
"Okay wait for me, I'll be back," he said and ran away in quick steps.
I could only see him run away. I didn't even get the chance to ask where he went. Sighing out I walked out of the door and sat on the stairs, waiting for him.
A few minutes later which felt like an hour I heard him after coming closer to me.
"Yeh theek hai?" He asked and stood right in front of me.
(Is this okay?)
I looked at him. He was wearing a grey t-shirt and black trousers, accessorizing them with shoes and a silver watch, holding the papers. He looked good but the only problem was that he looked too good. His broad and powerful shoulders were followed by thick biceps and veiny forearms. His tight chest with a T-shirt was giving an outline of abs.
"I wear this at home. Isn't it simple?" He asked.
Yeah simple!! Your simplicity is making me go crazy. It was going to be very tough giving him a tour around the village.
"Yeah, it's good!" I smiled while saying so and started to walk away only to avoid getting my eyes glued to his physiques and getting caught.
He followed behind quickly.
"So tell me what do you want to visit first?" I asked while we started walking out of the house.
"I have already inspected your fields and lands. I now wanted to visit those people and their lands who were approached by Rao's for settlement." He said walking beside me.
I nodded and informed him about a few landowners, and farmers who were victims of crop failure. We walked around the village and I introduced him to a couple of farmers. He was doing quite good talking to them after I broke the ice.
Villagers blended pretty comfortably with him too, he had his own soft-spoken way. His wisdomful eyes and soft-spoken attitude did a lot of convincing. Why doesn't he talk like that to me? Why is he always intimidating me while we are alone? He was behaving so calmly and simply with them as if he's always like that. But only I know his mischievous side. Just look at him nodding at everything like an innocent baby. And if it was me on the other hand, he would have definitely made me either blush over his actions or speechless over his words not to forget his deep voice and charming looks, which have their own magic.
Suddenly he looked at me away from others and winked. And I choked over the tea I was sipping.
We were sitting here on the open lawn of one of the landowners on different wooden-made sofas, opposite to each other. A lady started to pat me on my back and he quickly came over to me leaving pen and paper.
"Are you okay?" he asked putting away the cup.
I nodded while coughing.
He held my shoulders and looked at my face worriedly.
He was concerned.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." he muttered very slowly.
I shook my head and straightened up to look good.
"I'm good. It's nothing," I said, trying to make him believe.
"Really?" He asked and I nodded feeling better.
"I'm fine," I said and he nodded.
He started to walk back and I held his t-shirt tugging a little.
"Dobara se kiya to bahut pachtayenge aap," I whispered only for him to hear.
(You will regret if you repeat this again)
He looked at me and smirked lightly while standing straight. Walking back to his seat he joined in the discussion. And then not for once did he look at me.
I felt proud teaching him a lesson.
Later on, we walked out of the house and planned to visit two more farm fields by noon. We headed down to one of my uncle's farm fields.
We were walking in between the fields on a very narrow path. He was following me behind. And I was filling him with mine and Radhika's stories, how we have been playful since childhood and how many times we both imagined Radhika's wedding and today actually she's gonna get married. Everything felt surreal.
"And what about you? Haven't you imagined yours?" He asked in between.
I should have seen this coming. Everybody has asked me about my marriage choices then why not him?
"No. I do not ever want to get married. Not in this life at least." I said casually walking ahead.
"Aisa kyu?" He asked, walking behind.
(Why so?)
"I don't even like the concept of marriage. I like no one other than my family." I replied.
"How can you even say that when you will not try to get to know about people that you meet in life?" He said.
I did not know what to answer him now. He had a point, but was I interested in knowing people I meet in life? Did I want to give myself that chance?
I pushed back a few strands behind my ear out of slight nervousness and hesitantly asked.
"So should I begin to know people in my life?" I asked.
"Yes of course!" Came his instant reply.
I cleared my throat this time.
"Who do you say in specific?" I asked but there was no reply.
I gulped down and gathered some courage to hear his response coming. But it didn't. I was confused if he even heard me. It was bugging me to wait any longer. So I turned around and found him lost looking away somewhere.
I followed his gaze and my mouth left agape on finding he was looking at a group of girls who were smiling and giggling in his direction.
I instantly felt disgusted looking at those girls and quickly turned to look at him. I stepped up to him and grabbed his chin pulling him to face me.
I raised my eyebrows questioning why he was looking at those village girls.
"What are you looking at there?" I asked curiously with a hint of anger.
He smiled a little and answered.
"What do you want me to look at?"
"Hume dekhiye aap hamare saath aaye hai," I replied with an obvious reason.
(Look at me, you have come here with me)
"Filhaal to aap ko hi dekh rahe," he said making my anger cool down.
(For now, I'm looking at you only)
He then gently held my shoulders and made me turn to where he was looking. At first, I felt confused and angry later I realized what he was looking at so intensely.
It made me feel angry and stunned, at the same time.
