Chapter 572
Bride Behind The Mask
After Marguerite tucked her phone back into her purse, Miley ended her call as well.
With a turn, she began to explain, unasked, âMy parents just got back from their trip abroad, theyâve just landed in Stonebridge City, and wanted to let me know theyâre safe. Oh, and they send their regards to you, and theyâve invited you over for Christmas.â
Every year, Mileyâs parents would invite Marguerite and Teresa to join them for the festive season.
Marguerite had been to their home twice and adored the cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
âWith all the drama this year, I doubt I can make it, but Iâll definitely send them my best. Werenât your folks on vacation, though? Why are they back so early this time?â
A spark of excitement lit up Mileyâs eyes as she said, âItâs because of you!â
âBecause of me?â Marguerite was a picture of confusion.
âYep! Since we were neighbors when we were little, Robertâs been dying to dig up history on you and Yunaâs childhood. You know how he is, stubborn as a mule. He refuses to accept Yuna as his sister and wonât let go of any shred of hope!â
Marguerite was baffled, âIf he wanted to know about my childhood, why didnât he just ask me directly?
Why go through all this trouble?â
Miley smiled slyly, stepping closer, face to face with Marguerite, âWell, I might as well ask you. You were raised by your grandmother, right? Did she ever mention that your family took in a foster child at some point?â
This took Marguerite aback, her face a blank slate, âNo, nothing like that. Yuna and I are twins, that was common knowledge around Marina Shores Village, and Iâve never doubted it.â
Miley shrugged, âSo now you see why Robertâs been pestering my parents? Youâre clueless about the whole thing! Heâs after the dirt from before and just after you were born. Itâs a tangled web, and Iâm just as curious as you are.
But you know whatâs funny? Without a shred of evidence about your origins, Robertâs absolutely convinced youâre his sister! He flat-out denies Yunaâs existence!â
Miley rambled on, parched, and eventually headed to the fridge to down a can of soda in one long gulp.
The more Miley talked, the more Marguerite felt an odd mix of emotions stir within her.
In the Fitzgerald family, she had a fondness for Penelope, and Robert Fitzgerald had indeed been a big help to her. But what had she done to earn such trust from the mother and son?
Even she couldnât understand Robertâs adamant belief.
Miley finished her soda with a satisfied sigh and delivered her closing argument, âLong story short, according to Robert, if Yuna isnât his sister, then the Fitzgerald familyâs heiress can only be you! If thatâs the case, everyoneâs happy. For one, Robert wonât have to deal with her every day, and two, youâll be the one engaged to Mr. Winstonâs son!â
Miley delivered the last sentence with a melodramatic flair and a suggestive wink at Marguerite.
But Margueriteâs mind was too preoccupied with her own confusion to entertain any thoughts of romance.
She had an important question burning inside her, âWhat I really canât wrap my head around these past few days, whether itâs you, Robert, or even Frederick, is why are you all so certain that the Fitzgerald family heiress is either me or her?
Where are you getting your odds from? If Robertâs sister isnât Yuna, she could very well be someone else entirely. Why the fixation on me?â
