Chapter 562
Bride Behind The Mask
Miley feigned a sudden realization, deliberately nudging Marguerite and raising her voice for effect, âWhoa, so Mr. Winston is still hung up on his ex-wife, huh? I think Zackâs got a point. What do you say?â
Marguerite shot Miley a withering glare but remained silent.
Was she trying to stir up more trouble in her already chaotic mind?
âBut you knowâ¦â Zack suddenly changed tune, his expression souring.
He remembered that Ms. Lockwood was Mr. Winstonâs assistant, and that Mr. Winston had instructed him to look after her â she must be an important employee to the boss!
Better to vent a little to her, indirectlyâ¦
âLook, no one dares to complain about Mr. Winston chasing after his ex. But itâs us common folks at the bottom who suffer the most! We knew Mr. Winston was tough to work with, but with his ex around, heâs become even more nitpicky! Ms. Lockwood, I wouldnât dare to speak out if it werenât for your kind face.
Although Mr. Winston had his heyday in the perfume industry, letâs face it, heâs lost his sense of smell.
A lot of the production steps are just unnecessary fussing, according to experience.â
Still irked by her earlier spat with Frederick, Marguerite seized the opportunity to vent, âExactly. Heâs so pedantic, itâs unbearable! We could just hand over the formula and let you guys produce it to spec. But when he meddles with the technical side, itâs like an amateur trying to school the pros. Thatâs what you mean, right?â
Her words struck a chord with Zack, who nodded vigorously in agreement, âAbsolutely, Ms. Lockwood! And not just that, Mr. Winston can be quite obsessive. I get that itâs his perfectionist streak, but it sure makes our lives harder! Ms. Lockwood, maybe you could have a word with him, ask him to delegate and let us take full charge!
With Mr. Winstonâs intimidating presence, Iâm afraid heâll scare the workers into messing up!â
âHeâs so authoritarian, volatile, obsessive, and imperious, how could he possibly listen to me?â
Marguerite used the harshest words she could think of to describe Frederick, but it did little to soothe her frustration.
Zack sighed in sympathy, âWell, it looks like weâll just have to keep our heads down and work harder.
But Ms. Lockwood, how long have you been working with Mr. Winston? You seem to know him so well?â
He remembered Frederickâs assistant was always a portly man, so Ms. Lockwood must not have been around for too long, right?
Marguerite hesitated, feeling a bit guilty, âNot⦠not that long.â
Not long? How could she describe Frederickâs personality so accurately if it hadnât been long?
Miley, watching the back-and-forth with the glee of someone who loves a good drama, couldnât resist adding fuel to the fire, âZack, donât let her spin you tales! Mr. Winstonâs ex isnât just anyone â itâs her.â
âOh, so Ms. Lockwood is Mr. Winstonâs ex-wifeâ¦â
Zack followed Mileyâs lead without thinking, not quite processing the information at first.
But when he caught Mileyâs sympathetic and meaningful gaze, he stiffened, quickly catching on.
âYou⦠you⦠youâ¦â He stuttered for a moment, completely tongue-tied.
Frederickâs ex-wife was Marguerite, wasnât it? Marguerite⦠Ms. Lockwood!
Damn it! They both shared the surname Lockwood!
What had he said in front of Frederickâs ex-wife? He had bad-mouthed Frederick! This was it; he was done for!
But what in the world were these two playing at? Boss and assistant? An office romance?
He was truly out of luck! Why hadnât someone given him a heads-up?!
