Chapter 491
Bride Behind The Mask
The intern let out a sigh of relief as she took back the signed waiver. In truth, she had crafted the document herself, and the hospital didnât actually have any of the policies she had mentioned earlier.
Her actions were driven entirely by fear, having been thoroughly scared by Yunaâs heartless demand to use one son to save the other. What if something went wrong during the blood draw? How could she possibly shoulder that guilt? So she wrote the waiver, as an a just-in-case safeguard.
After Yuna had stormed off, the intern looked down at Hayes, lying on the gurney, her heart heavy with sympathy. Seeing the poor kid scared stiff, she gently squeezed his hand to calm him and said in a soft voice, âYour nameâs Hayes, right? Donât be scared. Iâm not gonna take too much blood from you. Just a little bag, once a month, for half a year. It wonât hurt you one bit. Youâre brave, arenât you, Hayes?â
For some reason, Hayes trusted this intern. He nodded timidly and piped up in his childlike voice, âYeah! Iâm brave!â
The blood draw was over quickly, taking no more than five minutes.
Outside the operating room, Yuna seethed with rage when she saw the little bastard coming out so soon. She had planned to be rid of him today! Yet that intern had only drawn such a small amount! It seemed she would have to have another word with the department head later.
Putting Hayes in a taxi, Yuna couldnât help but give a stern instruction, âHayes, donât tell anyone about this blood exchange, okay?â
Hayes was confused; his face was pale from the recent procedure, âWhy?â
âEverythingâs so chaotic at home right now, and daddyâs busy with work. If you talk about it, itâll distract everyone. Youâre a good kid; you donât want to cause any trouble, right?â
Hayes felt a sadness welling up inside. He had just had his blood taken and felt awful, yet his mom hadnât given him a proper hug. But then Hayes remembered how mean and scary his mommy had been to the intern. Scared, he quickly agreed.
Half an hour later, at the Winston Group.
After wrapping up a meeting, Maurice had just returned to his office when Janie rushed in.
âMr. Winston, I just got a call from The Atlas Private Hospital. Theyâve found a child whose blood type is a perfect match for Mrs. Winston. It appears Hayes Winston has been to the hospital for a blood draw.â
Long ago, Maurice had entered Margueriteâs DNA into the database at various hospitals in Stonebridge City. If a child had blood taken, it would automatically be cross-referenced with Margueriteâs DNA.
Maurice spun around, an instinctive edge of suspicion and menace in his posture, âWhy would he go to the hospital to have blood taken out of the blue? Did Marguerite take him?â
Could it beâ¦
Marguerite had discovered something? So she took Hayes to have a paternity test!
Janie shook her head, replying, âIâve checked, and Ms. Marguerite started working at a cosmetics company a few days ago. She should be at work now, and wouldnât have had time to take Hayes to the hospital.â
Janie didnât know that Marguerite had joined a company under the Fitzgerald family umbrella and didnât think much of it.
Hearing it was just a cosmetics company with no ties to Thunderbolt Enterprises, Maurice didnât give it a second thought either.
âMr. Winston, before you come clean with Ms. Marguerite, I think we should ensure Hayesâ safety. How about I investigate what illness heâs got?â
Illness? He and Hayes lived together at the Winston Mansion; how could the boy be sick without him knowing?, Besides, aside from being a little quiet, Hayes seemed to be having a blast every day with Teresa. He didnât seem sick at all.
Mauriceâs anxiety grew as he thought it over, âNo need to check, Iâll call right now.â
Saying this, he immediately reached for his phone.
