Chapter 31
Bride Behind The Mask
Meanwhile, the luxurious Cullinan was sailing smoothly on the flat road.
Marguerite sneaked a peek at the man, finding him quite dashing as he steered the wheel with one hand.
She was contemplating whether to explain about Yunaâs bracelet when Frederick beat her to it, âWhere were you this afternoon?â
A hint of surprise flashed in Margueriteâs eyes.
Instead of asking about the alleged theft, he was asking about her whereabouts in the afternoon.
Turning to him, Marguerite responded honestly, âI was handing out flyers.â
âHanding out flyers?â The surprise was evident in Robertâs voice from the back seat, âWho told you to do that?â
âI donât know him. He was a bald dude with a beer belly, dressed in black.â
Among LuxeScents Internationalâs staff, only one person was bald, the head of the Marketing Department.
Robert seemed a bit helpless, âMarguerite, youâre too naive. You just do whatever they tell you to do?
Youâre not even in his department.â
Easier said than done with such a laissezâfaire attitude! She didnât have a degree, still an intern on probation, everyone seemed to have the fight to order her around.
Marguerite pressed her lips but didnât say more to Robert.
After all, both Robert and Frederick were rich folks. How could they understand the struggles of an ordinary person?
It didnât take long to get back to the office. Marguerite returned to her desk, continuing to endure the ridicule and scorn from others.
âLook! The boss is in Baldâs office! He looks pissed! Scary!â
The gossiping whispers of her colleagues immediately reached Margueriteâs ears. She saw a crowd gathering.
âWhatâs up? Did Bald screw up?â
âWho knows?â
âShh! Quiet! Listen!â
Baldâs office was directly opposite everyoneâs workstations, easy to see with a simple glance.
But at that moment, the curtains were drawn tight, so everyone could only listen to the commotion inside.
Marguerite wasnât interested in the office drama. She just kept her head down and worked.
But the commotion in the office was too big to ignore.
âWho gave you the authority to boss my people around?â
That was Frederickâs voice!
And something sounded like it was smashed to the ground.
âI⦠Mr. Winston, I didnât hurt your people!â
âDid you get Marguerite to hand out flyers?â
âMr. Winston, I⦠I didnât know Marguerite was your person. I thought⦠she was just an internâ¦â
âGo settle your wages with the accountant. I donât want to see you again.â
âMr. Winston! Mr. Winston! Please! I have a family to feedâ¦â
Marguerite froze.
Was Frederick standing up for her?
She found it unbelievable, suddenly looking up towards the office, only to find her colleagues staring at her with complicated expressions.
Ahâ¦
Did they misunderstand something?
Bam-
The office door was flung open, breezing a wave of cold air to everyone.
Everyone felt a chill, immediately returning to their desks, heads down, no one dared to look up.
The silence was eerie. Margueriteâs eyes met with Frederickâs.
Her face flushed, feeling both embarrassed and perplexed.
Frederickâs sharp gaze swept over the crowd, his voice cold and angry.
âIf I find out anyone else bullying the interns, your fate will be worse than his!â
Frederickâs aura was chilling. No one dared to make a sound.
But everyone knew, the intern the boss was referring to was Marguerite.
Marguerite felt confused, she couldnât understand the man in front of her anymore.
Though Yuna falsely accused her of theft, Frederick didnât question it, even defended her when someone made her hand out flyers.
What kind of man was Frederick?
Marguerite had no answer, shaking her head and ready to get back to work.
Unexpectedly, Frederickâs voice came again, âMarguerite, come upstairs with me.â
The curiosity among the staff grew, some exchanged glances. Marguerite could feel it.
She swallowed, responding in a daze, âOh⦠okayâ¦â.
