Chapter 104
Bride Behind The Mask
Laverne waved her hand like an idler. She immediately stepped forward and examined Yunaâs face closely.
Vigour filled her big eyes and her stretched face.
âWhoa there, Yuna. You had a bug on your face, a big one. I was just helping you shoo it away,â she said, swinging her hand in front of Yunaâs face.
Yuna looked closely and sure enough, there was a squashed mosquito on Laverneâs wrinkled hand.
Even so, she shouldnât have slapped her!
Yuna felt like her insides were tearing apart by anger. Her arm trembled with the urge to punch the old woman in the face.
But, because Chuck was there, she held back.
Laverne looked at Yuna eagerly, waiting for her to continue, âWhere were we? Oh, you were saying Margueriteâs personal life is a hot mess. Then what, huh?â
Her expression was both eager and curious, like she was listening to some juicy gossip.
Yuna, still fuming from being slapped, was all too ready to unload her anger on Marguerite, âMarguerite likes fooling around with shady men, Granny. Iâm afraid one day she wonât even know who the father of her child is.â
Laverne slapped Yunaâs mouth, âYikes! Bug flew right into your mouth, Yuna! Smack it! Smack it!â
As she spoke, she squashed several more mosquitoes.
Yuna was completely stunned. She staggered a few steps before collapsing to the ground.
Her inner resentment exploded. Seeing Laverne advancing again, Yuna quickly covered her head and yelled at Chuck.
âChuck, stop her! My Grannyâs gone nuts! Where are all these bugs coming from in broad daylight?â
Chuck couldnât help but laugh. He quickly chimed in. âMs. Yuna, itâs spring. The bugs are everywhere!â
âThat doesnât mean she should hit my face!â
âMs. Yuna, donât fret. Iâll handle it.â
Chuck said this but sneakily grabbed Yunaâs shoulder.
Now, Laverne had free reign to slap Yuna.
Again and again, until Yuna couldnât even speak.
Laverne didnât know how many bugs sheâd killed. All she knew was that her hand was starting to sting.
âOh, my dear granddaughter, there are too many bugs here. Letâs head back,â said Laverne, elegantly waving her hand and striding forward.
At this point, Yunaâs cheeks were swollen like a puffer fish. The sight was hilarious.
Seeing this, Chuck had to pinch his arm to keep from laughing.
He took a deep breath and, after regaining composure, helped Yuna up from the ground, âMs. Yuna, letâs go back. Mr. Winston is waiting.â
Yuna angrily pulled her hand away and shouted at Chuck, âWhy didnât you stop her from hitting me like that?â
Chuck looked a bit flustered, âMs. Yuna, she is old and just recovered from a severe illness. I was afraid I might hurt her if I tried to stop. Then Mr. Winston would blame me. I canât bear that.â
Yuna glared at Laverne, her eyes growing colder.
âItâs all Margueriteâs fault. If she hadnât hidden my granny away, my grannyâs condition wouldnât have worsened. I donât know what Grannyâs been through these years. She may have woken up, but sheâs become a bit confused. Chuck, you have to tell Frederick about this. He needs to take care of Granny.â
As Laverne walked ahead, her wrinkled face was serious, and there was a very wise and abstruse twinkle in her eyes. Who wouldâve thought she was a fool?
