Chapter 47
It was past midnight now, almost one thirty and most of the people had left the dancefloor. I couldn't blame them, I saw some that had danced for hours without any pause.
I was currently sitting by one of the many round tables that had my name on it. With me was Noah, Arianna and Aaron and Mason and Hayley. Jake and the rest were assigned to the table next to ours, six people around each table.
Suddenly there was a loud clinking that filled the mansion and the music was turned down until it was just a humming in the background.
âPlease take your seats everyone!â Stephanie asked with a big smile. She waited a few minutes until everyone were seated and then clinked her glass again, making sure that all attention was on her. She smiled when everyone quieted down. âThank you. I just want to say a few things. First, I hope you are having an awesome time! No older people certainly is nice, isn't it? And second, thank you so much for coming to my birthday party! I am really glad that every one of you is here and I want to make sure you have the best time, so don't hesitate to come to me if there is anything at all! Now, dinner will be served, the real one, and then you can all go back to dancing and doing whatever!â She gave a small laugh and then sat back down in her chair as waitresses and waiters came out of the kitchen doors, one by one serving food to everyone.
They were so many that it literally took five minutes to get every single guest a plate and a glass of champagne. And the food looked delicious. Steak with a good looking sauce and pasta, nicely put on the plate with some toppings here and there. I inhaled the scent of the warm food as much as I could and when everyone was served, we could dig in. And that's exactly what I did.
I ate worse than Noah, like a freaking pig. He and Mason kept laughing at me, food dropping out of their mouths as unexpected laughter came because of my behavior. Arianna stared at me with an amused face and Aaron chuckled every now and then. Hayley smirked at me, shaking her head.
âSamantha, you are the manliest chick I have ever met,â she said. Noah almost choked.
He pointed at me.
âSee! What did I say at the hospital?â he said after a few coughs. I gaped at him.
âI love my food! What's wrong with that, people? Come on! What is this world we live in?!â I asked them dramatically, trying to swallow it all down before opening my mouth.
âClearly a weird world,â Mason said while laughing.
âThere is nothing wrong with loving your food,â Arianna said nicely. âJust... love it right. Not like the dog you are.â
They all burst out laughing in a split second and I'll be honest, I laughed too. I knew I was always a freak when it came to food and eating. I loved it, it mattered to me, what can I do? I was born this way and I was certainly not complaining. And I could already see them cutting the cake. Yum.
âYou guys suck,â I mumbled between chewing. Noah grinned as he stopped laughing and leaned closer to me.
âI love that you eat like the animal you are,â he said huskily, growling. He was joking, though, and there was another round of laughter, this time a louder one from me too. He came closer with his lips and I gave him a quick kiss, mouth still filled with food. See why I love Noah? He's even weirder than me.
I pointed my finger at Noah once he leaned back again.
âNow that's weird,â I said to the rest, voicing my thoughts.
We ate for two hours, or well, we sat for two hours, eating every now and then, but nevertheless, after those two hours, we decided it was time to get up and move again. Hayley and Mason went to dance, Arianna and Aaron sneaked off somewhere and I do not want to know where and for what, and finally, Noah and I, went to the backyard.
There were lights put up on the trees and around the short stone walls/fences (A/N: Forgot the word I wanted for that, lol) and it looked absolutely magical in the night. I loved these cozy things, putting lights up everywhere, watching it in the night, enjoying it â it was beautiful.
âI hope Jake's okay,â I said out loud, more to myself than to anyone. Noah turned me around, putting his arms around my waist, pulling me closer.
âWhy do you say that?â he asked.
âHe was going to talk to Ramona, you know, the redhaired one? Mate stuff.â
âWait.. what? Ramona and Jake? He found his mate?â Noah's eyes widened a little with geniune surprise and excitement. I nodded with a smile.
âYep, or that's what he thinks. I haven't seen him since I told him to go to her.â I smirked evilly. âMaybe they went to get some alone time...â
âNo more details please,â Noah said with an amused face. I smiled and gave him a slow, lingering kiss. I pulled back a little, staring into his dark intense eyes. How was I so lucky to get Noah as my mate?
âWhat?â Noah asked, narrowing his eyes.
âNothing. Just thinking about us. I mean, really, how is it even possible that the one I hated the most, turned out to be the one I loved the most?â
My heart was beating for this guy. There was nothing that could be done without him in my life. You guys might think: well, you managed without him before you came back and realized you were mates. Well, yes, I did, but now that I do have him, everything is complete, there is nothing that I feel is missing in my life and I'm happy, all because he's here.
Noah smiled at me, a breathtaking, beautiful, loving smile.
âI don't know how that is possible, but I do know that as long as I have you in my arms, I don't care. I'm just thankful that it's you and that we're together.â
He leaned in and placed a kiss on my lips, only to be interrupted by that one voice.
âHey, have- oh shit, sorry!â
Noah and I both pulled back, turning our heads to see who had interrupted our moment. Michael. Great. A small growl came from Noah, one that only I could hear.
âIt just had to be him,â he said only for me to hear before letting me go and turning around. He took hold of my hand.
âSorry, I didn't know you were, um...â Michael waved his hand a little, as if that explained what he was trying to say.
âIt's fine,â I said with a smile as Noah practically pulled me after him, back inside to the mansion, before Michael could say anything back. I chuckled at Noah's behavior, letting him take me wherever he was going. I waited until he stopped and when he finally did, in the hallway behind the staircase, I grinned at him.
âCome on, don't be so angry at him,â I said, putting my hands on his shoulders. âHe didn't mean to walk in.â
âHow do you know that?â Noah muttered. âWe were standing with our backs to the door, close enough for anything to understand that we were doing something. He's still jealous.â
âNoah! And how do you know that then?â
âBecause I'm a guy, Sam, I know these things.â He rolled his eyes. I smacked him softly on the shoulder.
âWell, let it go. It's not like he can do anything.â
âNo but I will. Punch his face, that's what,â Noah muttered once last time and shook his head, frustrated. I chuckled again, giving him a kiss on the cheek before looping my arm around his.
âLet's go get a drink.â
We went to the bar and ordered two drinks, meeting Chad, Ronny, Alyssa, Lillian and Hayley there.
âHey!â I said happily, grinning.
âBar time, huh?â Noah grinned.
âYou know it,â Ronny said with an eyeroll. âI can't have Stephanie to myself at all so I'll just spend some time here, getting drunk.â
The girls and I chuckled.
âGuys,â we all said under our breath.
âCan't always have the girl to yourself, Ronny,â Alyssa said, patting his arm.
âI don't care,â he muttered like a little kid. Alyssa rolled her eyes at him.
Noah started talking with the guys and I joined the girls.
âSo, Lilly, I haven't seen you much. Having fun?â
Lillian smiled.
âI am, actually! The music is really good here, I can't stop dancing.â He laughed.
âYou should've seen,â Hayley said, pointing at her. âShe was going all sexy and wild on Max on the dancefloor. You missed out.â
âNo!â I gaped at Lillian. âHow did I ever miss that?!â
Lillian laughed, rolling her eyes. After all, she was the goody two shoes, innocent and smiling all the time. Who would want to miss a person like that getting all freaky on the dancefloor?
âI knew you're wild,â I said with a smirk.
âMax is your mate?â Alyssa asked Lillian. She nodded and Alyssa put a hand over her heart. âAw, that is so cute! You guys are perfect together.â
âThank you,â Lillian beamed, blushing.
Chad approached me, giving me the impression that he wanted to tell me something in private. I took a step closer to him, all of us still in a small circle, but the guys were talking and so were the girls, so it was good.
âHey,â he quietly with a chuckle. âYou seen Jacob anywhere?â
âNo, I was actually looking for him. Why?â
âHe, uh, went to... do something. I just wanted to see how it went.
âWait, do what?â I already knew the answer. The way he said âdo somethingâ and looked away told me everything. I grinned. âYou know about Ramona?â
Chad stared at me with wide eyes.
âYou do, too?â
âPlease, I'm the one who told him to go talk to her in the first place. He did, right?â
âHe did. I just don't know what happened after that.â
âTrust me,â I said with a smirk, âif they aren't here, they're somewhere.â
Chad understood the meaning behind my words and laughed.
âI guess you're righ-â
A choir of screams broke out in the mansion, interrupting everyone and everything. Everyone turned to the source of the chaos and it was right on the dancefloor. A huge circle was made by everyone as they gathered around to see what was going on. Immediately, Noah and I, being the future Alpha's, ran towards it, pushing through the crowd.
The horrified looks on everyone's faces made sense once I reached the circle and saw the motionless figure on the floor, a pool of blood forming under the head. My heart clenched in sadness and rage as I realized that this was no accident. Chad and Ronny were behind us, including Brian, Michael, Drew (the other guys from that little ânewâ pack) Mason, Victor and Jacob now. Aaron and Arianna stood across from me, in the crowd, watching the scene with wide eyes.
âClear the building,â I told Mason and the guys behind us. A little louder I yelled, âEveryone needs to go home! Clear the building! And, please, do not panic!â
Mason, Drew, Chad, Ronny, Michael, Brian, Aaron, Jake and Victor started escorting everyone out, making sure that every single person left. Noah told them to watch out for any other attack and to stay alert.
(A/N: Sorry for all the names, haha)
Noah and I walked closer to the body on the floor, Ari, Hayley, Alyssa, Stephanie and Ramona a few feet behind us. We stood there, watching the lifeless body, the pool of blood getting bigger and bigger.
I shook my head.
âI can't believe this.â
âWho did this?â Alyssa asked no one in particular. Noah and I shared a look, both already knowing the answer. I glanced at Arianna and she immediately understood. Noah walked over to the glass doors that led to the backyard, watching the hole that had been made by the bullet that had hit our pack member. He walked outside and just as I was going to tell him to get back inside, Victor passed us and joined him.
âIf anyone is feeling sick, don't stay,â I said to the remaining girls. I sighed, slumping down on the closest chair. This was just unbelievable. Why couldn't we just have a party without any trouble? Why did they have to attack now, in front of everyone?! And kill an innocent young guy? Tears started to build in my eyes in frustration and sorrow for our now dead pack member and his family.
Arianna came up to me after the girls all sat down in silence. She put a hand on my shoulder, giving me a sad smile. Noah and Victor came back inside and the rest of the guys now joined us as well. They walked over to Noah and Victor, discussing what had just happened. They walked over to the body and Noah looked up at everyone that was left, our closest friends.
âIt came from the forest,â he said. âWhoever shot was a hell of a shooter. The goal was to scare us, obviously, since Byron White,â he motioned to the guy on the floor, âhad nothing to do with what they really want. This is like a warning from them, letting us know that they're still watching, they're still here and that they haven't given up.â
âI'm sorry,â Stephanie said, âbut I don't understand what's going on?â
âMason, please explain everything to them,â Noah said. Mason nodded and walked over to Stephanie, Alyssa and Ramona together with Chad, Ronny, Drew, Brian and Michael. None of them knew anything and neither did Hayley, Mason's mate, so of course, because they were now here, they had to know. Besides, it's better if they know, maybe they'll be more careful.
Noah talked to Jake, Aaron and Victor who nodded and went to take the body, carrying it away from here. I stared at the blood that was left, fresh and dark red. Someone in my pack just died, because of me. No, don't worry, I'm not going to have another crying session over âeverything is my faultâ, I'm just saying. It is me they want after all and they decided to kill someone just to scare us.
âHey...â
Noah crouched down in front of me, putting his hands on my thighs, taking my free hand in his hands while my head rested against the other one.
âAre you okay?â
âI'm fine,â I said with a bitter laugh. âI'm just thinking about his family. They're going to be crushed. Noah, he was the same age as us! He has a mate somewhere! Do you understand how big that is?â
As I said that, the tears in my eyes got bigger and bigger, blurring my vision. This guy, Byron, he would never meet his mate, if hadn't met her already and if he had, then that's even worse! His mate would never see him! Imagine if that was me and Noah, I'd die if my mate was gone, even if I had met him or hadn't met him.
âI do,â Noah said quietly, with a sad voice. âBut there is nothing we can do. He was shot in the head, he was gone immediately.â
I nodded.
âI know. It's just... at a party? Really?â
âIt's more risky to attack at a party and that's exactly what they wanted. To tell us that they don't care where we are, what we do or who is there.â
âYou're right. And this needs to end once and for all.â
âSam, don't think about that now. Not now, okay?â
I nodded, my eyes wandering over to the group that now knew who Liz was and what she wanted with me. They were looking at me, with pity. And I hated it. I appreciated their concerns but I didn't pity, from anyone. Michael's eyes bore straight through mine and I realized that Noah might be right. Maybe he did feel something for me. Ugh, too many things were happening at once.
I stood up, Noah joining me.
âOkay, listen up. Now that you know, be extra careful, please, and if you see anything suspicious, let me know right away and make sure to stay on the territory from now on. These people don't care anymore and obviously they're even more sick to their heads than we thought, so I'm going to make sure it all ends and meanwhile, you will protect each other and the pack. You got that?â
They all nodded.
âGood. Now go home and stay together. Go quickly to the cars and leave immediately.â
Ronny took his mate, Stephanie, in his arms and left with Drew, Chad, Brian and Alyssa behind him. Mason, Jacob, Victor, Arianna and Aaron stood still, watching them go.
âArianna, Aaron, go. We'll be alright. Jake, Ramona, you too,â I said sincerely, begging them with my eyes. âMason, Hayley. Please.â
After a few minutes of insisting that they stay with us, finally they listened to me and left. Now it was only, Noah, Victor and I left.
âLet's just clean this up,â I said.
UNTIL NEXT TIME, MY LOVES!
