Chapter 19

Three evenings later, I was outside in our woods, running in my wolf form. It felt great, the feeling of freedom and the wind through my chocolate brown hair. I concentrated on giving all my strength to run as fast as I could as I was proudly dodging everything. I had been running for at least an hour now without a pause and I still wasn’t tired. You’d think that I’d get tired much sooner since I hadn’t run like this for long but I actually managed to run much more than usually, without getting tired or anything.

The sky was turning darker and darker by the minute and the moon was shining brightly, giving the woods a mysterious and magic yet dangerous look. I loved it.

Suddenly a loud growl interrupted all my focus and concentration. I got so surprised by the growl and the fact that I wasn’t alone, that my sudden lost focus made me too slow and as I tried to stop, my right side hit a tree and pain shot through my entire side. I groaned and automatically scanned the trees and bushes for any movement.

That had hurt. Ugh.

There was another growl and I immediately growled back, even louder. Who the hell was that? It was either someone playing with me or someone being for real. I walked around a little, ignoring the small pain that was still lingering on my side. I wanted to shout and ask who was there but I couldn’t talk in my wolf form, only growl, so I did it again.

Then he came out.

I knew it was a he because he was much bigger than me and he had that “male wolf” thing about himself that they all had, that certain way he stood and walked and the way he looked at his prey, which in this case was me, unfortunately.

Another smaller growl escaped my lips as the dark blue-black wolf and I stared at each other, both standing in prepared positions in case one of us would attack. Who the hell was this and what did he want? I wasn’t far from my territory and there were no other wolves in this town than us. Was this someone from Aaron’s pack, which lived in another town here in Ohio? But it couldn’t be because they knew my dad and Uncle John’s pack were the only werewolves here. He shouldn’t act like this towards me if he knew that.

I moved my head to the side once as I growled calmly, telling him to leave. He had nothing to do here. I was vaguely aware of my clothes that I had around my front leg. Maybe I should change into my human wolf? It wasn’t safe, though, because I was much weaker like that and much slower even though we had those extra fast and good “everything”; the wolf form was always better in every way.

The wolf in front of me took a step forward and then another, all the while staring in my eyes. It looked like he was going to fight me but then again, I couldn’t know for sure because I had been in freaking New York for five years and I had never been in a situation like this. Ever. And that meant I hadn’t learned how a wolf looks when he’s about to attack or when he’s not there to hurt you and all those things.

I felt so freaking weak. I had never really fought a wolf for real, only when I was joking around with my cousins and the Black’s before I left town. But I was much younger then and wasn’t as informed and strong. But it was good that I loved fighting because even though I couldn’t tell for sure if he was going to attack or not, I knew how to fight well both in human and wolf form. I had done my practice when I was in New York; I just went out to the woods far away somewhere, shifted and did my thing. Now it was real, though, and I must admit: I was a little nervous.

All of a sudden, the wolf attacked me, throwing himself at me as if I was a carpet or something. I got both surprised, shocked, frightened and hurt and a loud yelp escaped my lips. My right side hurt even more now, including my right leg and my left arm. Stupid wolf!

I pushed back all the pain and began to fight back. I tried to push him off, pushing myself up first and struggling with his weight and his large form. I managed to get him off of me somehow and now we were throwing ourselves at each others throats. It was an adrenaline kick for sure but it was scary as hell! I had to get used to this before getting my Alpha position; that was a must.

I aimed for his throat but at the same time tried to dodge his big teeth aiming for my throat. I tried taking him down with my front legs, putting them around his head and pushing him down but he was a bit too strong for me at the moment. He pushed me back but I went right back on him quickly, both of us growling loud and angry. Then he pushed me again, this time into a nearby tree. It didn’t hurt as much as the other so I was good to go again.

Just as we were fighting and he was about to jump on me like the first time, a loud growl erupted in the bushes. Both of us, too shocked to continue, stopped and I immediately jumped backwards. Oh shit. What if this was one of his friends or something, coming here to help him finish me off? The wolf came out of the bushes and before I could even look at him – yes it was another male. He was huge – my she-wolf already told me who it was.

Yeah, Noah Black, you guessed it right.

How he had found out I was here, in trouble, I don’t know, but I was beyond grateful and relieved that he had and that I wasn’t alone because to be honest, I wasn’t so sure I would go home without any serious injuries or even alive after this fight.

He came out with a big angry growl, slowly walking towards the other wolf as he was staring at him. There was not a second that his growling stopped and the other wolf slowly back away. Just as Noah jumped him and almost caught his throat, the wolf got out and ran away, disappearing into the woods. As soon as he was gone, Noah ran over to me, the sound of a whine from him as he stood close to me. I just nodded, letting him know that I wasn’t seriously hurt.

We ran back home but I had to stop several times because of the pain in my left side that was first caused by the tree and then by that stupid wolf’s jump on me that practically flattened me like a carpet, as I had said. Noah couldn’t stop whining whenever I had to stop running and I was frustrated because I couldn’t tell him in words that I was fine. Neither of us changed because neither of us was clearly ready for that yet and this wasn’t that serious anyways, he was just worried.

After very close to two hours, we arrived home on our territory and on our field. Noah signaled for me with his head to get shift quickly. We both went behind our houses but I had to stand on the side a little because since our houses, with Arianna’s between, stood on a row, we could clearly see each other if we shifted into our birthday suits.

As you shift, your bones change back into your human body and that was the part that hurt the most. My entire left side, my leg, my arm, my ribs, my chest, everything hurt with extreme pain. I knew it was just temporary and nothing serious but it still hurt at that moment. I kept my mouth shut, though and hurried to put on the soft shorts and the loose t-shirt I had. I went back out again just as Noah did and I tried not to walk weirdly but it was hard because my ribs felt a little out of place.

Noah immediately came over to me quickly, eyes filled with worry.

“I can’t believe this,” he mumbled. “Does it hurt really bad? Did you break anything?” he asked as he lifted me up, bridal style, and carried me all the way into my house and up to my room. Now we had my father after us as well as Liz and her kids. They were going to leave this week, I remembered as I saw them.

“I don’t think I broke anything,” I answered Noah as he put me on my bed carefully. “But my left side hurts.”

“Samantha!” my father said, shocked and worried as he ran inside. “What happened to you?! What’s going on? Are you alright? Noah, go get Dr. Rain.”

Dr. Rain and Dr. Trey were the two doctors of the two packs, Dr. Rain being our packs doctor. Noah ran out quickly with a nod.

“Dad, I’m fine,” I answered. “I was running and some wolf came and attacked me. It’s nothing serious.”

“Sammy, I told you to never go outside our territory! You know it’s dangerous!”

“I know but dad, don’t you think it’s weird? We’re the only werewolves in this little town. Don’t you think it’s suspicious and dangerous that attacking wolves are here as well?”

“I’ll deal with that later, right now we need to see what’s going on with you.”

Just as he finished that sentence, Noah barged back in with Dr. Rain behind him. Noah came to my other side, standing there with his arms crossed as he watched Dr. Rein and my dad shake hands.

“Hello, Samantha,” Dr. Rain said, smiling. I smiled back, glad he wasn’t panicking like my father and Noah and oh, Liz. Yeah, her eyes were practically falling out and she had her hands in her hair, hysterical about me and the werewolves in town. She was downstairs with her kids, though, thank God.

“Hi, Dr. Rain. Can you please tell them I’m fine?” I asked. He chuckled, nodding as he put his bag on the foot of my bed and started taking out everything he needed.

He was done in ten minutes and the result was one fractured rib, one sprained ankle and the rest would be just bruises he had said. He told me and my dad that I should rest and take it easy so my rib could heal as quickly as a werewolf should heal, otherwise I’d either moved too much or something was wrong. He put a bandage on my ankle, just to keep it covered, said goodbye and left.

“Samantha,” my father said, calm now. He was shaking his head. “Don’t go that far again, alright?”

“I wont,” I said, giving him a smile. He smiled back and walked over to the door.

“I’ll be downstairs if you need me. Do you want anything?”

“No, dad, thanks.”

He nodded and left me and Noah alone. As soon as my dad was gone, Noah sat down next to me on the bed. He was looking down at my floor, thinking very hard. Then he shook his head slightly, more to himself than to me.

“It was such a weird feeling,” he said quietly. He then looked at me and continued. “One moment, I was in my room, lying on my bed. The next, there was this beating somewhere in my chest and I immediately knew that you were in trouble. I just knew. Then I just ran out and followed your scent. I panicked. It was so weird.”

“Thank you for coming,” I said, taking his hand in mine. “I honestly didn’t have a good chance in that fight.” I chuckled.

“I should’ve come earlier. I got that pounding in my chest one time a few minutes before but I ignored it, thinking it was just something in my body. Then I got it again, several times and I got the feeling that you were in trouble and hurt. I didn’t know that mates had that, too.”

“I think mates have everything,” I said, laughing. “We’re probably going to be surprised a few more times.”

“Yeah, I think so, too.” He smiled. “Are you sure you’re fine?”

“I’m perfect,” I said, smiling widely. “Go home and tell everyone I’m fine. I could already hear Mason and your dad bombarding Dr. Rain with questions when he was on his way here with you. I couldn’t help but listen in.”

“Yeah, I’ll go tell them. Do you want me to stay or something?”

“Noah,” I said, smiling. “Go home. This is seriously nothing. I’ll just get some sleep and I’ll be fine. Thank you.”

“Okay. Call me if there is anything. This shit is only making me more worried now. And don’t leave the house without telling me first!”

“Got it, boss.” I laughed as he glared at me but he chuckled, got up and left. I liked him a lot better when he was like this. I smiled as I watched him go and shut my door after him.

Then I shut my eyes, thinking about that unknown wolf. Who was he? Was he alone? Was he here for something or someone? It was dangerous, especially now when we knew he was attacking. I sighed, shaking my head. I really hoped my dad was going to deal with this quick and not in a few weeks. And I needed rest; I had training in a few days and my rib had to get back into place as soon as it could.

Also, I'm kind of stuck, you know, writers block?

It's annoying and I hate it because I just want to write something but if I write without actually thinking about what I'm writing, it'll all just turn out veeery wrong.

So sorry if I'm slow with updating and stuff, I'm just trying to get some ideas into my head :)
